The Advantages of Informal Training

Coaching and mentoring can play a big role in developing and advancing your workforce. It helps employees hone their skills and acquire greater knowledge, and - in turn - achieve individual, team and organizational goals. The majority of Career Edge's interns, for example, believe that mentoring is one of the most critical components of their internships, based on the findings of an internally conducted survey.

Traditionally, the coaching process is a series of formal meetings and professional development sessions. However, employers are increasingly using informal coaching practices that occur on an as needed basis - in everyday conversations, at any place and time. This type of guidance is never intentional and is typically used when key behaviours or challenges faced by the employee are observed

Why informal coaching?

Advantages and benefits of informal coaching include:

  • Increased motivation and dedication: Through informal coaching, employees become progressively aware of their coach's investment in their individual success and development, which helps to increase their level of commitment and enthusiasm.
  • Heightened sense of trust and openness: Informally guiding and mentoring employees helps them to relate to their coaches better, and allows them the opportunity to easily and comfortably connect with - and request support from - their mentors, as required.
  • Quick resolution of issues: By quickly teasing out a minor issue or challenge - avoiding a formal, scheduled meeting - teams and individuals are able to swiftly proceed with their tasks and projects.
