Sunflower

Ah, sweet September.   There is always something fresh and new about September, isn't there? Just as God has promised, the mornings are a bit brisker and the late afternoon finds you reaching for that sweater. The trees are beginning to hint at oranges and reds and a sprinkling of leaves appear on that freshly mowed lawn.  Pumpkins and mums start to show up at the roadside stands and soon we'll all be drinking warm cider and hot chocolate.  But before we get too nostalgic about the change of seasons and maybe even start thinking about packing for those winter SOWER projects, there's something else about September that needs your attention - the annual SOWER Board of Trustee meeting, Sept. 29 - Oct 1.  This year we'll be saying good-bye to two valued members - Ed Shuster, our current president, and Mal Wall, our treasurer.  These two dedicated servants will be greatly missed and we thank them for jobs well done. We will be welcoming (and re-welcoming!) one new member - Dave Nietzel, one previous Board member - Jerry McGhee, and one continuing Board member - Jenny Rasmussen. As we gather in Lindale, TX, please pray with us that we will be unified in spirit, gifted with wisdom and filled with grace as we strive to maintain the integrity of the SOWER ministry. May ALL we do be to His Honor and Glory!

Summer Camp Excitement
Camp Living Waters
Here is a recent report from the camp director at Camp Living Water (NC-285) - Bryson City, NC

Greetings friends everywhere,

We are half-way through Junior Two, we wrap up the summer program on Friday.

I almost wrote "criday" and that would be appropriate!!  Lots of good friendships have been formed and we expect tears to be shed during the times of good-byes.

And there's usually a tear or two at the baptism at the end of the week.  Last week we baptized 14 young people, the most ever, in two separate services down by the creek.  Some had to leave before 4 pm on the van to Durham/Chapel Hill, and others wanted their parents to come and witness them being baptized, later in the afternoon.

Two of the children baptized last week had just accepted Christ as Savior earlier that week!!  And this week two girls have accepted Christ. One has asked to be baptized.  It is a thrill to all of us to see these young people so eager to follow and obey their Savior and to give testimony to others about their faith.

Junior One was the biggest camp ever, 98 children and 50 staff!!  Another first -- two children from Chile, SA.  They spoke only Spanish, and to our embarrassment none of us could speak their language adequately.  It was good that their mother and grandmother were here and helped translate.  The two boys had a fun-packed week, learned a lot, and were among those baptized on Friday.

Today was outing day, 80 people out on adventures!!    They go hiking, horseback riding, gem mining and on a big tubing trip.  Some climb at our tower for their adventure.  It is always a different atmosphere around camp as they each return and give excited reports to their friends (or stagger wearily to supper!!)

Along with a record-breaking attendance this year (thanks to the new rooms in the lodge), we had a record-breaking scholarship program (thanks to the floundering economy).  With the help of many we were able to sponsor 41 children this year -- all of them from families in financial straits, such as a single parents, or families with unemployment or high medical bills.  Various churches and friends and family sponsored children also.

Dear Sam and Sally
Servants on Wheels Ever Ready

Dear Sam and Sally,

We've been SOWERS for a few years and have a question as to whether or not we should leave a donation at the ministry we are serving.  I figure this is a personal decision but wondered what our board members feel about this.  Also, if you are staying those extra days after the project, should we give an additional donation?

Thanks, from friends who want to do the right thing!

Dear Friends,

What a great question! You are absolutely right that leaving a donation with the ministry you are serving is a personal decision. The agreement with our projects is simple - they provide the hook-up, we provide the workers.  However, since you've been SOWERS for a few years, I'm sure you are aware that having SOWERS come is not without cost to our projects. Along with having the funds to accomplish the work that needs to be done there are also the utility/maintenance costs of having the RV's hooked-up. While our labor is free, our electric and water are not! Our projects cover a wide spectrum of financial stability, but I don't know that anyone would not appreciate a donation to cover the costs of our utilities.  And as to staying that extra week? Well, that is also an agreed upon "term" in our SOWER-Project relationship, so you are not required to leave a donation for that either.  However, it would be considered "good neighbor" policy to either pitch in and work a day or so or leave a donation to cover the cost of your additional time there.  Let your heart be your guide - these ministries are all working to advance the Kingdom of our Lord, and we are honored to be able to serve them however we can.

Thankful for your generous spirit,

Sam and Sally
