SOWER Ministry Newsletter

August 2013

Greetings!

August. The beginning of the end. The end of summer, that is! The grandkids are heading back to school, the garden is beginning to be overrun with zucchini and that pink 2014 SOWER Registration Form is sitting on your desk. I hope it's on the top of the pile!  Have you ever wondered why this has to be done EVERY YEAR???? There are a couple of reasons. The most obvious one is so you have the opportunity to update any of your personal information so the office (and the roster) has all the correct information.  It also gives you a chance to reassess your skill levels.  But even more, it's an important way to renew your commitment to the SOWER Ministry.

If your life circumstances have changed, and you don't believe you'll be able to work any projects in 2013, consider changing your status from "Active" to "Alumni". You'll still receive the prayer chain, this newsletter, the January Sowergram and Annual Roster and will have access to the Sowergram on-line. And next year when you get your Annual Registration Sheet (or sooner if you find you are able to work), you'll be able to change your status back to Active if you desire. If you choose not to return the registration, your status will become "Inactive" and you cannot sign up for projects in 2013. You will not receive the Annual Registration form again. The ministry truly values our Alumni prayer warriors, so if your workin' days seem to be over (or on hold) become one of our Alumni!  The Registration Forms are not due until October 1st, but why not take a moment today, track that baby down, fill it out and send it in!  You know it will just get lost and forgotten if you put it aside! And don't forget - the office needs the signed original copy for their files.  No scans or faxes.  Just sayin'. :)

Thankful for His Mercies,

Unexpected Blessing

When John suggested that we join a "helps ministry" I agreed reluctantly to try it for 6 months. Through the experiences of those 6 months, and the Godly advice of a dear friend, I realized that I needed to readjust my priorities and give my whole heart to His service.  Recently the Lord allowed me to combine two of my passions - serving Him and teaching quilting - at a SOWER project which brought us great blessing.

One of our favorite projects is Palomar Christian Conference Center (CA-253). I had often run quilt retreats at that conference center in my 'previous lifetime' so I was delighted that we could come there to serve as SOWERS.  During the May 2013 project I had the opportunity to run a small weekend quilt retreat.  (The camp had a slow weekend, and I had interested friends in the area.  It was a perfect fit!) Two young ladies from the staff and the Camp Director's daughter, Grace - age 10- also joined our quilting fun.  Many relationships were strengthened that weekend.

  Grace learning to quilt

Grace was a very special addition as all of the ladies encouraged her, taught her, loved on her and made her feel welcome among all the Grandmas. The attendees were so generous and excited about cultivating Grace's interest in sewing that the last day of our retreat one of the ladies suggested that we take a collection for a sewing machine for Grace.  During the last week of the project I continued with informal sewing sessions with Grace and several other staff members as we continued to enjoy our quilting time. After the project, I headed home (not too far from Palomar) with the intent of returning after I had purchased a sewing machine for Grace with the gift money from the retreat Grandmas.  When I came home, there was a bag of fabric and new sewing tools hung on my gate to further contribute to Grace's goodies. What a sweet day that was, when we were able to return to the conference center and present the sewing machine (you wouldn't believe what a great machine the Holy Spirit provided!), all the goodies from the ladies and the God story that led to the inspiration for a special gift to Grace. Grace was thrilled beyond measure.  We were so blessed to be a part of this God story, but when I received the thank you note from Grace's mother, Janna, I was reminded again that our God is the God of details!  Here's an excerpt from that sweet note, which spells out why we do what we do.  Not for earthly reward, but for changed lives and to show others Christ's face through our faces and service to HIM. -

Dear Sherry and Living Stitches friends,

I cannot even begin to express my gratitude for the amazing love you have shown our Grace!  I am honestly overwhelmed with emotion by your generosity toward her. Not only did you guys allow her to come and learn from you and enjoy her time sewing with all of you, but you gave so that she can continue to learn and sew! This has made such an impact on our whole family.

Our move to California was very difficult for Grace.  She was 9 when we moved, and had to leave her best friend and all of her school friends.  That is a HUGE deal at her age.  She has struggled with finding her place here, and understanding why we needed to move. Micah and I continuously pray that she will come to understand what it means when you surrender your life to full time ministry, and that when HE calls, you go. Micah and I have known that the blessings of moving would one day outweigh what she saw as negative things.

Her weekend with all of you is one of those blessings that we have prayed about. Her weekend spent with all of you, has been her most joy-filled weekend in our 7 months here.  (And the rest of the week spent with Sherry was wonderful!)  She would wake up each morning, dressed before I could get out of bed, ready to get down there to sew.  I can't thank you enough for that blessing.

John and I have felt the Holy Spirit at Mt. Palomar. It has provided shelter and healed us at times in our younger days when we needed a mountain experience. We are now giving back to this Holy Place where lives are changed.  We would encourage SOWERS to say yes to this project.

The SOWER Area Reps are the dedicated folks that check out and check-up on projects in their area.  From time to time different A.R.'s will be sharing some "up close and personal" information about projects in their area. Here's a little more information about Treasure Mountain (CO-241) in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains from LeRoy and Donna Pease (#2263).

Nestled in the high Rocky Mountains of Colorado, Treasure Mountain Bible Camp (CO-241) exhibits the handiwork of Almighty God in a unique western setting and offers isolation and inspiration to all who attend.  With its new dress code (skirts no longer are required for the ladies) this project is open for SOWERS during the months of June, July, August and September, when the weather is great with temperatures in the 50's and 60's at night and usually in the 70's and 80's during the day.  September is especially beautiful with the Aspen turning gold and the bushes turning red.  SOWERs park at the Bauman's  home in Marble at about 8000 feet elevation.  The sites are very level and not far from the river.  The road from I-70 (at Glenwood Springs) to Marble is excellent and has some beautiful scenery. Along with being part of the dynamic ministry going on at Treasure Mountain, SOWERs can also enjoy some of Colorado's most beautiful and interesting sights. Day trips from the camp can include visiting Glenwood Springs with its Hot Springs Pool, taking a tram to the top of the mountain for lunch, experiencing the therapeutic  Vapor Cave, driving the 10 mile beautiful Glenwood Canyon, enjoying the many fine restaurants, and for the more adventurous, river rafting.  Not far away is the awesome Colorado National Monument with amazing rock formations.  Closer to the camp is the Redstone castle with tours in the afternoon.  Aspen and Vail are not too far and offer many summer options for adventure! And if you'd like to try driving something smaller than your RV, there are several opportunities for 4 wheeling nearby.

The Camp is beyond Marble at 8600 feet.  For a great pictorial introduction to the camp visit their website. You will see the buildings on which you might be working and hear about the history and the ministry of the camp. After visiting the Web site, you will probably want to be a part of this awesome ministry!  The Baumans recommend that those who sign up to work at Treasure Mountain Bible Camp, and are concerned about the altitude, take a few days to get to Marble at increasing altitude locations to become somewhat acclimated to the altitude before arriving.  When you are in higher elevations, it also helps to drink plenty of water.  See you there!

Help Needed!

We have an immediate need for an Area Rep for Region 5, ½ of Texas which includes the Hill Country and Valley projects (12 total). An Area Rep keeps an eye on the projects in their area (often by visiting them) and also welcomes new members in that area. Area Reps are also involved in checking out new projects.  Sound interesting? Contact me for more details!

2013 Midwest Michigan SOWER Reunion
Monday, Sept. 23 thru Thursday, Sept. 26
MI-139 Michindoh Ministries
4545 E. Bacon Road
Hillsdale, Michigan 49242

An excellent guest speaker, music, auction, book exchange, and other activities are planned. Cabin space is limited, and we don't know which 6 will be available, so plan on coming with your RV. Those fortunate enough to get a cabin may want to share it with another Sower couple.  We will keep a waiting list open and available for cabin requests in case of a cancellation, so that the next on the list will be notified of the availability.  Costs for the reunion are as follows (same as last year):

Meals per couple:   $60.00 (5 meals @ $6.00/ea)

Registration:          $25.00 per couple

Cabin rate:            $25.00

RV Campsite:         $0.00 (That's right - FREE!)

We will be taking only one offering, for Michindoh.  All other expenses including speaker and entertainment will be covered in the budget.  Plan now the auction items you will bring. Please remember the auction items are to be worthwhile items another Sower would consider valuable.  Also consider the testimony you may want to share regarding your ministry and service as a SOWER.

Please contact John Crandle at jmcrandle@sbcglobal.net for more information, to volunteer, or with additional questions.   We are looking forward to seeing YOU at Hilltop!

Dear Sam & Sally,
Mailbox

Dear Sam and Sally,

We're finding that since we've been on the road we've been using the on-line Sowergram more and more and the hard copy less and less.  Is there some way to opt out of getting the hard copy?  And what about when the password changes? How does that work?

Signed,

Loving the new technology!

Dear Loving,

We are so glad you asked!  Yes, it's very easy to opt out of getting the hard copy of the Sowergram.  Just contact the office and let them know you'd like to make the change. In December you'll receive a hard copy of the 'Gram along with the new Roster.  Additionally over the course of the year, you'll be receiving a Trustee nomination form, Trustee ballot and Annual Registration Form in the mail.  And don't worry about when the password changes. You will  automatically be emailed the new password prior to each change. Printing and postage costs are the biggest operating expense that the ministry has.  Each Sowergram that doesn't need to be printed and mailed saves the ministry almost $8.00. And that can really add up!  So email the office, and switch over to "Web Only". It's a good thing!

In Him,

Sam & Sally

Methodist Home

The Methodist Home in Macon, GA is one of our two new projects this month.  This new project, sponsored by John Jones (#2813), is a group home which "in response to Christ and the Church, [strives] to be a model agency that restores childhoods, strengthens families, and cultivates a people-building organization." The gospel is presented to the children not only in chapel services, but also through the love and attention shown them through the staff. This worthwhile project is a great location for those traveling the eastern corridor in the fall and spring, and they only have three spots, so sign up today!

YWAM Cimarron
Cimarron, CO
CO-517
YWAM Cimarron

YWAM Cimarron is our newest project! Located in the beautiful Colorado Rocky Mountains (elevation 8600 ft.), YWAM Cimarron was founded in 1975 as a mountain base to train disciples and send them out to impact the world for Christ. Although this location is new to SOWERS, we are very familiar with the other YWAM locations in our SOWER Family of Projects. YWAM Cimarron is somewhat remote, but it would be a great project to "bundle" together with Treasure Mountain (CO-241) and Navigators (CO-548) for a great Colorado summer! YWAM has 5 spots, available for SOWERS during the months of June through October.

Other Project News
Miracle Mountain Ranch (PA-514)  suffered the loss of 3 structures in their Horse Department.  All three buildings and 6000 bales of hay were total losses. Thankfully, although several small animals were lost in the blaze, no people were injured. The Ranch is planning to rebuild as God provides. Click on the picture to read the whole report from Miracle Mountain.
MMR Fire
MMR is open for  4 SOWERS through September. Can you help?

Mercy Ships (TX-366) has recently been featured on 60 Minutes (CBS).
Africa Mercy Ships
Africa Mercy Ships
While the CBS piece is about the wonderful healing ministry of the Africa Mercy Ship, we at SOWERS are honored to help in some small way to "serve and encourage" such a global ministry. Mercy Ships (located right in Lindale, TX) has 4 SOWER spots, and is open for workers from October through June.

NY-220
located in Keeseville, NY is a conference center that teaches the Scriptures from a Jewish perspective.  They've had SOWERS for many years and recently dedicated an entire webpage as a SOWER thank-you.
If you've ever worked at this great project you may just find your picture there! And if you haven't worked there yet, it's not too late!  They have 5 SOWER spots and are open from May through September.
