SOWER Ministry Newsletter

February 2013

Greetings!

Ah, Sweet (short) February! The month of "Love". Do you conjure up visions of chocolate hearts and long stemmed roses? Or maybe it's more of that little tease of spring we sometimes get this time of year (usually just before that March blizzard!). Many of our SOWER family are enjoying their time at the "Sun-Belt" projects (February is traditionally our "most worked" month), but I know that many are still at home, taking care of the business at hand. I think that during this Love Month it's always good to remember that the Love of our Savior is a VERB and not a noun. "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son" for you and for me. May each of you find the grace and strength to keep sharing His LOVE in the days ahead.

Oh, How He Loves you and Me!

Trusting in His Mercies,

Some thoughts on the GL....

In the 13 years that Roy and I have been SOWERS, we have always appreciated the concept of the Group Leader (GL). We've seen how this process eliminates chaos, problems and inefficiency. We recently had an experience that drove home the wisdom of our SOWER GL set-up.

We volunteered at a health care facility (not a SOWER project) for a month. There were to be four teams of two persons, each wandering in at kind of the same time.

As we arrived we were given an orientation that was not standard, and as we later found out, many issues were not addressed. The teams consisted of a single man, a couple who work there a lot (therefore "owning" the project), and finally a couple comprised of a sweet wife and a husband who was a bully, rude, vulgar and an agitator.

Each entity in the facility had their own way of telling us what to do and many times those were at definite cross purposes with other departments. The volunteer coordinator told us one thing, the facilities manager another, the kitchen staff another, and the director another. That doesn't even account for the input from the (grouchy) secretary, the residents, the volunteer "bully" who wanted to reorganize the whole show and finally from the "owning" couple who, after a week's absence, were not happy that things were not done the way they wanted. There was so much dissention in that facility!

Sadly, we were "baited" because we were Christians, so had to deal with that. We loved the residents and that made everything bearable and worthwhile.Nightly card games with them, taking them to the doctor, and Bingo were the highlights. I especially felt a calling to work at the Round Table, the place where people came from the surrounding community for Adult Day Care. They loved singing with the guitar and formed their own little singing group. So there were lots of pluses on that front but most of all we missed the spiritual uplifting we always get with the SOWERS.

We said many times how much we missed a GL - ONE person to receive the instructions, to sort out the schedule and to be an advocate for the volunteers. As it was, rumors ran rampant (isn't that a great alliteration!)and added to the mayhem. Sowers are blessed to have an intelligent "chain of command" to make our work go smoothly. Honor your Group Leaders, please, and treat them exactly as you would wish to be treated when you too take your turn at the helm.

More GL thoughts (and thanks!)

My first project, we got a great mentor ( The Sower's President) Mr. Jerry McGhee. His leadership and advice still serve me well. He wanted me to be a GL. I did not. but guess who got his way, hahaha NOT ME. After three times as the GL, I learned  he was right, it was not so bad.. Thank you Sir for so much!

The Group Picture

Sometimes GETTING the group picture is half the battle!  As often happens our group picture kept getting put off until it was almost too late.  Finally, we were all together and Stan even found something with Loma De Vida (TX-4) on it.

Dear Sam and Sally SOWER,
Servants on Wheels Ever Ready

Dear Sam and Sally,

We are new Sowers and have just finished our second project. We understand we are now eligible to be the Group Leader (GL) on a project if we are the first to sign up. We have had great mentors in the 2 projects we completed as the GL's in both were very helpful in teaching us their methods in creating a successful project for everyone. We just want to make sure we have as much information as we can before it is our turn to lead as the GL. What do you think the most important task a Group Leader has?
Signed,

Getting ready to take my turn!

Dear Getting Ready,

Congratulations and welcome to the SOWER Ministry family! We pray you have a long, enjoyable career of service to our Lord within the SOWER Ministry.  You have asked a very good question, because as you have already learned, a good GL is very important to the success and effectiveness of any project . As a new(er) SOWER, you have probably already received the GL Training Video and GL Training document that is included in all new member packets. (If you haven't seen those, feel free to request them from the office!) Those are both very helpful in "getting up to speed" on what is involved with being the GL. And then in every GL packet, along with all the project information and skill sheets of the SOWERS working on your project, are the "Group Leader Guidelines" which review the process.  Right in that first paragraph is a wonderful statement that sums up the job of the GL -

"The primary responsibilities of the GL are to support the SOWER Policies (i.e. Constitution, Bylaws, Membership Guidelines and GL Guidelines); and to help create an atmosphere that is pleasing to our Lord and encouraging to the project host and SOWERS."

Without a GL there cannot be a project.  So thank you for your willingness to be prepared and ready when needed.

Serving with you,
Sam and Sally

Do you have a question or comment for Sam or Sally? They would love to hear from you if you have any questions about the SOWER Guidelines or SOWER etiquette. Contact them at samandsally@sowerministry.org.

Our main project for the SOWERs was to start the building of a duplex house. We helped with the floor slab, put up Styrofoam walls, and poured concrete in the walls. Next month the truss rafters and roof go up. What a blessing to help build this house.

We just finished our third week here at Africa Inland Mission (FL-412) in Florida. What a wonderful place this is. Here is a group picture of the SOWERs and volunteers that worked this month.

Upcoming Board Meeting
March 9, 2013

In just a couple of weeks the Board of Trustees will be joining together via the phone lines for our March meeting. We'll be calling in from all across the country (and time zones!) and we need your prayers!  We'll be reviewing the last 6 months in the ministry and discussing many of the items that have been brought to our attention by you, the members.  Do you have a concern for the board? If so, please make sure that you correspond with a Trustee before the 9th.

Please pray with us as we work together to maintain the integrity of the ministry, serve our valued ministry projects, and seek to bring glory to our Lord and Savior in all that we say and do!

Happy Birthday!

We don't yet see things clearly. We're squinting in a fog, peering through a mist. But it won't be long before the weather clears and the sun shines bright! We'll see it all then, see it all as clearly as God sees us, knowing him directly just as he knows us!

But for right now, until that completeness, we have three things to do to lead us toward that consummation: Trust steadily in God, hope unswervingly, love extravagantly. And the best of the three is love.
