April 2013 Newsletter

LIVE BEACH CAM
Welcome to April! March was a great month and it brought  many people to town. Spring Break is over and Semana Santa is just winding down. The weather has been perfect and life is good here on the beach in Puerto Penasco.

Things have been very busy here at our resorts over the past month. Spring Break was good and it sure looked like everyone had a great time. Oh to be so young and carefree again. Actually, if I had the chance, I'm not sure if I would go back again or not - well, yeah, why not. This past week, Semana Santa filled the town to absolute capacity and I will be surprised if we don't break yet another record for the number of visitors during the holiday.

Sales have also been very good. We have been working non-stop on offers, counter-offers, and closings. People are finally starting to get the picture that the market is changing and now is the time to buy. We now have over $4.5 Million in sales and pending sales for this year. That number is almost the same as we sold in all of 2013. If things continue the way that they are going, we are going to have a very good year.

Our new hours have taken effect and our sales offices are all open from 9:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. The restaurant and Tiki Bar at the Sonoran Sky have been very busy and based on the comments that I have heard, everyone is enjoying the new venue. How can you beat it? Excellent food and service in an elegant setting right on the beach.

We'll be promoting in Las Vegas this month at the National Cadillac Collectors Show. It looks to be another very big event and a draw for a lot of potential Buyers. With the new flights beginning in June, we hope to bring some first time visitors from this show as well. The response to our previous shows this year has been great, so we'll just keep on working them.

When you come down next time, check out those beautiful big blue information signs just before the checkpoint outside of town. They were donated by yours truly (Sonoran Resorts) to let 1st timers know that there is an official checkpoint coming up and that it is there for everyone's safety. Of course, I tried to get them to put our logo on the signs but they said no. No surprise and it's OK. That was not the purpose - I just had to give it a try.

Finally, our Las Vegas Night is taking shape and will be held on Saturday, May 25th, in our Sonoran Sky convention center on the 2nd floor of the resort. It is bigger and set up better than the restaurant where we held it last year. And, our new restaurant will provide the buffet and we have added more blackjack tables this year. I'm still trying to work out a craps table as we have a real honest-to-goodness professional ex-craps dealer right here in Penasco who is willing to work the event for the benefit of DIF City Charity. We are still working out some details but this year promises to be even bigger and better than last years super successful and fun event. We'll have lots of prizes, raffles, blackjack, roulette, hopefully craps, and another Texas Holdem Tournament. Tickets will be available at the door or online, with final details coming in my May 1st Newsletter. If you would like more info before that, please feel free to contact me.

Aeromexico to Begin Flights to Puerto Penasco on June 20, 2013
The contracts have been signed and it is official - Flights from Las Vegas to Puerto Penasco, continuing on to Hermosillo will officially begin on June 20, 2013. The original scheduled date was set for June 15th, but a call to Aeromexico confirmed that the official date will be the 20th. The flights will begin twice weekly on Thursdays and Sundays. I understand that they will be testing the route twice per week with an aircraft with a capacity of around 50 passengers and hope to increase frequency or aircraft size as demand increases.

This route has been guaranteed until at least the end of the year and, of course, we all hope that it proves successful and becomes a permanent route. It will certainly be needed as the convention center is completed later this year, and definitely, when the home port opens in 2015. Using Las Vegas as the hub will greatly increase the desirability and ease of making the trip. Las Vegas is a very popular and easy to get to international destination, not to mention the fact that many from the desert city itself will certainly want to visit our beautiful oceanfront resort city. The fact that the route includes Hermosillo will also play a big part in the probable success as there are many in that City who will love to visit Las Vegas.

I was told that the ticket prices will be around $500 round trip. While that may sound a bit high, please remember that a large portion of that price goes directly to international fees and taxes. If you were to rent a car, pay Mexican insurance, gasoline, and include the convenience of flying, it will certainly be worth it for many people. Over all, I think that this is the best plan for flights that we have had so far. Other than starting a bit late in the season, it is a great plan and I predict that it will be a success. I haven't seen much in official print yet, but here is a link to an article mentioning the new route: Route News

There is another bit of news that may interest all of you Phoenix area folks. It seems that a company named Jet Purple (not kidding) is working on providing flights from Scottsdale to Puerto Penasco. I am not privy to all the details yet but Puerto Penasco is listed on their website http://jetpurple.com/ as a destination.
Who is SkyMed? They're a 24 Year Old International Emergency Transportation Company You Need to Know About

When we were younger, running around Rocky Point (or any other unfamiliar vacation site) we risked our lives on quads and forced our trucks up sandy mountains until they almost rolled over and other crazy, injury-prone antics we performed in the name of adventure.  Some of us were lucky enough to make it through those days, others made it with nominal to serious injuries, their friends and relatives wondering if they would make it all the way back to Tucson or Phoenix or their home towns even farther away still alive as we arranged for emergency evacuation by ground or air.  And, if we were involved, we also know the huge expense involved to pay for such emergency evacuation, especially if it occurs in another country.

Enter SkyMed Emergency Air Evacuation, the travel related membership service founded in 1989 for the specific purpose of providing an affordable way for its members to both physically and financially survive a life threatening

According to SkyMed, who operate in 32 countries with headquarters in Scottsdale, Arizona, the cost for such evacuations ranges from $9,500 to $50,000 USD and because emergency evacuations from foreign countries aren't covered by most insurance policies, payment is normally demanded up front.

Even as permanent residents here in Rocky Point, and certainly for visitors, in a critical medical emergency, most of us want to be taken to our doctor or specialist with whom we are familiar back in the USA. This is where SkyMed could provide the peace of mind for us to enjoy a stress-free life style here in our little slice of paradise by the sea.

When we heard about the services of SkyMed, it seemed like a real solution to fill the affordability void that exists for the situations in which we might find ourselves here in Rocky Point:  like needing to get to a hospital in Tucson or Phoenix (or anywhere in the U.S. or Canada for that matter) as soon as possible.

injury or illness especially when they are traveling. It doesn't

take long to find oneself beyond one's comfort zone when it comes to medical concerns. In case of an emergency we want to be seen by our doctor, in our hometown, in a hospital we know and trust.
Red Cross Begins Annual Fundraising Campaign Through the End of April; Why You Should Give Freely

There are so many reasons-over 2,500 of them actually-why Americans should support the Puerto Peñasco Red Cross with donations during their annual fundraising campaign that runs through the end of April.  About this same time each year, regular visitors expect to see the dozens of volunteers with white coffee cans strategically located at traffic lights along Benito Juarez. You can almost gauge the springtime by their smiling presence and gestures of appreciation for whatever amount you can drop into their collection cans. They'll thank you by placing a small round white sticker with a red cross on your windshield.

However, even the Rocky Point Regulars may not know just how important this particular campaign period is to the local organization.  Even though this is a national campaign that starts nationwide on the same day as determined by the national headquarters, it is the only major fundraiser from which all the money raised goes entirely to the local office.  In fact, the funds raised from the street collections each year must total enough to cover at least 50% of the local Red Cross annual bare bones operating budget of $70,000 USD-a tough nut to crack a peso or two at a time on street corners. The other 50% comes from solicitations from local businesses. The only other funds they receive come through the state auto license renewal program that solicits a $50 peso voluntary donation to support the Red Cross. Funds from this program can only be used for the purchase of hard assets like equipment, furnishings and medical related vehicles such as ambulances.

It's a fact that the more we know about what is needed and why, the more willing we are to help a particular cause. And the good news is us gringos, in the proper spirit, could make a significant difference in this year's campaign since it takes place during the high visitorship holidays of Spring Break and Semana Santa (Easter week).  So we're hoping that after learning some new facts about the Red Cross and the many ways they assist visitors you'll be more likely to remember to throw all your change in your shirt pocket or the console of your car before you head down town every day during this annual campaign. By the way, any denomination is gratefully accepted, and in any national currency you may have (they'll take any of it-pesos, dollars, francs, lire, in coins or bills.-and exchange it with the bank)...

Change in Mexican Insurance Liability Laws

Until recently, if you were involved in a car accident in Mexico, the liability damages imposed on an at-fault driver who caused a negligent fatality in Mexico were capped at a maximum of approximately US$50,000 total damages.

Recently, the liability limit has been increased to approximately US$300,000.

We have always recommended that you always have Mexican insurance when you drive in Mexico, and now we recommend that your policy should cover you for at least US$300,000 in third party damages, and US$500,000 is recommended to cover any contingencies.

Your US or Canadian auto insurance policy might cover you for damages to your own vehicle and property, but it cannot cover you for third party damages, because Mexican law stipulates that only insurance companies which are licensed in Mexico can provide the type of auto insurance coverage that is recognized and accepted by Mexico's legal system.

Driving uninsured in Mexico is a big risk.  If you are involved in a nasty accident, even if it's not your fault, you could be arrested until  blame has been assessed. Having an insurance policy will provide you with the liability coverage you need for any claims against you. Many policies also offer additional support services to help you through what would be a difficult time and situation.

There are many companies who can provide you with valid Mexican auto insurance but I recommend using only a local company. There are two that I recommend here in town. ProAlliance Insurance and Portugal Insurance. Both are reputable and offer personalized service and competitive pricing. Depending on how often you visit, it may be much cheaper to buy an annual policy, rather than buying insurance each time you come.

OXXO, What are They? How Do You Pronounce It? And, Where Did They All Come From?

If you have been in Rocky Point lately, you have certainly seen an OXXO store... or 2, or 3, or 50. Some of them are almost across the street from each other. But, where did they all come from? Who owns them all? Why are there so many, so close together?

OXXO is pronounced OX-SO, pretty much just as it looks. I have heard many people trying to be overly creative with their pronunciations but, sadly, it is just pronounced the simple boring way that is is written.

The stores are not franchised and are all officially owned by FEMSA (Fomento Económico Mexicano). FEMSA, is the largest beverage company in Mexico and in Latin America  and as of September 2011, also the largest independent Coca-Cola bottler in the world.  FEMSA originated as the Cuauhtémoc Brewery in 1890, which was restructured as FEMSA in 1988. It is still based in Monterrey, Mexico.

OXXO was founded in Monterrey in 1977, following a FEMSA marketing plan to use company-owned stores to promote and market the Cerveceria Cuauhtémoc beer brands. This distribution method bypassed the traditional Mexican network of local wholesalers (deposito de cerveza) selling beer via local supermarkets and small stores (tiendas and miscelaneas). In the first stores, the only products sold were beer, snacks and cigars. The success of the stores was such that the project kept growing and OXXO built new locations rapidly, becoming a ubiquitous presence in Mexican cities and towns.

The first official OXXO store was opened in 1978 in Monterrey. OXXO stores then spread to Chihuahua, Hermosillo, and Nuevo Laredo. Throughout the eighties, OXXO gained fame around the cities where it was established. In 1998, the 1000th store was opened. On July 6, 2011 was announced the opening of the 9000th store, established in Oaxaca. Obviously, fairly recently, they discovered Puerto Penasco as well.

FEMSA is the owner of many recognizable brands of beer such as: Tecate, Bohemia, Sol, Dos Equis, Superior, Noche Buena, Indio, Carta Blanca, Kaiser, Xingu, and Bavaria.

As of January 2010, Heineken of Holland bought the beverage division of Mexico's FEMSA for $7.6 billion Dollars. So, now when you buy your beverages at an OXXO, the money isn't staying local. It isn't even staying National. In the end, much of it is likely going all the way to Holland.

I must admit that I am not a fan of OXXO. They came to town like a swarm of locust and they have really forced some great family owned stores out of business. Even my favorite Burrito and Doughnut store, Reggies 8/12 and Drunken Doughnuts, have closed their doors since an OXXO went in just down the street. The sign on their door says "closed for remodeling" but it has been that way for quite some time now and I've seen no remodeling going on. I had noticed that their shelves were getting more sparse lately as well.

Like it or not, it looks as if OXXO is here to stay. But, for me, I'll continue to shop in the local tiendas, expendios, and  panadarias as often as possible, and I will continue to enjoy the experience of buying locally.

El Pollo Pápago: Succulent Rotisserie Chicken; Authentic Old Mexico Experience

The entrepreneurial spirit within the way of life in Mexico is no better represented than through the ubiquitous hot dog stands and small roadside pollo asado places. They represent a culture void of façades, purposely stripped of the complexities of design and décor except for that which expedites the service of food to the hungry. They are the antithesis of an atmosphere for those who "live to eat". They are the comfort factor to those who "eat to live". In that sense their atmosphere is pure Mexican; they understand their market is made up of those whose simple objective is to satisfy their hunger and get on with their day; from businessmen to after school students to tourists and shopping housewives, these venues exist to feed people who are hungry.

One of the most illustrative examples of such a Mexican roadside diner is El Pollo Pápago located on Benito Juárez just south of the Burger King across the street from Dulcería Lupita. If you're in the mood for rotisserie chicken, El Pollo Pápago, have racks spinning and searing chickens from 11:00 AM until 7:00 PM daily.

El Pollo Pápago is ruggedly authentic Old Mexico from the moment you pull into the small dirt/gravel parking area almost on the street. Large hand-painted white rocks cordon off bougainvillea bushes and open to a short latticed walkway lined with some baby palms and desert plants leading to a patio adorned with the trade mark red plastic Coca Cola tables and chairs and into the main covered area that offers more table seating as well as a low blue and white tiled counter with multi-colored stools. To the right, the rotisserie oven/prep-kitchen is on display. On the wall is a large chalk board breaking down the one basic menu specialty and the side dishes, juices and soft drinks you can get with your chicken.

As you approach through the bougainvillea entrance you'll be greeted by the gregarious English speaking conversationalist and owner, Martín Victorica or his wife, Ana, who moved here together from Mazatlán where they were born and raised. And if you're there after school is out, you'll likely have the pleasure of meeting their 11 year old son, Aldo, who has already established his legacy at school as a spelling bee champion...

"Making New Traditions in Rocky Point" by Guest Blogger Sandy Baker

From tamales swaddled in corn husks at Christmas, to the spirit welcoming celebration, El Dia de los Muertos, Mexico is a country steeped in tradition.  With its tradition laden history, Puerto Peñasco was the natural place to begin customs of my own.  Perhaps it was the warm moist air that drew them out of me, or perhaps Puerto Peñasco was just that special place that begged to become mine through traditions.

Morning beach walks are not uncommon at any beach resort destination, and Puerto Penasco is no different.  Shell collectors and dog walkers sweep to the shore to enjoy the sound of the surf and the sand between their toes.  I was happy to join them, but something more occurred to me during one quiet barefoot walk.  To become part of the community was to take ownership and pride in its care and not leave that expectation to someone else.  So that morning, instead of filling my pockets with shells, I picked up a wind-blown plastic bag and began to fill it with bits and pieces of trash.  Don't get me wrong, the beaches are not filled with trash; quite the opposite.  But like all beaches around the world, pieces of rope, string and an occasional potato chip bag are washed ashore.

And so my beach sweeping tradition began.  The first morning of each visit to Rocky Point I spend walking the beach doing my part to maintain its beauty.  Assuming this responsibility connects me with the water and the sand and makes me part of the community instead of someone observing it from my window.

More traditions of my own have unexpectedly unfolded as I returned to Rocky Point over the years.  Our annual New Year's Day "Puerto Peñasco Plunge," a version of the colder and less attractive polar bear plunge, was the result of a little liquid courage speaking out the night before at a New Year's Eve celebration.  With nerves of steel, my friends and I dunked ourselves into the cool, sobering Sea of Cortez water early New Year's Day.  The hot coffee with eggnog that followed somehow made the plunge seem a bit less insane.  This annual beach pilgrimage is now one of my favorite ways of welcoming each New Year.

Of my many Puerto Peñasco traditions, my favorite is the "Welcome to Mexico" ritual.  Riding my Harley through the Sonoran desert on my first trip into Rocky Point I noticed the little roadside shrines scattered throughout the desert.  Some are no larger than small dog houses while others are the size of small chapels.  Most are made of painted concrete block and are decorated with brightly colored religious symbols like saints or crosses.  From within these shrines burns the never ending glow of pint sized votive candles, also decorated with symbols of saints and crosses, in a tradition that reminds me of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.  I've yet to see the guardians of these flames.  I've stopped at many shrines along the way and have never met another person in my visits.  Yet still these candles burn..

Rocky Point Notes Tourism Rebound

By Daniel González The Republic | azcentral

It looks as if spring break was a major success for tourism in Rocky Point this year.

Preliminary figures show that the hotel occupancy rate at the beach resort town known locally as Puerto Penasco averaged 43 percent during the first two weeks of March, said Hector Vazquez del Mercado Martinez, president of the Puerto Penasco Convention and Visitors Bureau.

That is up 4 percent from the same period the year before, Vazquez said. The town has about 6,500 hotel beds, up from about 3,000 in 2005, he said.

More than 50,000 people, most of them from Arizona, visited Rocky Point during the first two weeks of March, making this one of the busiest spring breaks for the town in years, he said.

Visitors spent on average $55 per person a day during spring break, leaving behind $2.5 million, Vazquez said.

The town, located on the Gulf of California, is about 215 miles from Phoenix and has long been a popular spring-break destination for college students and families from Arizona.

But tourism from Arizona to Rocky Point plummeted in the wake of a series of U.S. State Department warnings about drug-cartel violence along the Mexican border, the economic recession, tighter border security and regulations requiring tourists to have valid passports to re-enter the U.S.

In recent years, however, tourism to Rocky Point has been increasing steadily as the economy in the U.S. continues to improve and Americans' concern about drug-cartel violence ease, Vazquez said.

"We as a convention and visitors bureau are pleased because besides the natural beauty of our town once again we can show that this is a peaceful and quiet place to come relax and have fun," Vazquez said.

Mexico's Economy is Booming

Mexico's economy is on fire and now is the time to invest, if today's news headlines are any indication. Check out this impressive array of information, which we have gleaned from a wide variety of stories written recently by some of the world's most respected financial institutions and reporting agencies.

According to Goldman Sachs, Mexico's rapidly advancing infrastructure, increasing middle class and rapidly declining poverty rates will foster a higher GDP per capita than all but three European countries by the year 2050. This estimate might be conservative, when you consider that according to Forbes magazine Mexico's economy and GDP was already 11th in the world as of 2010, which Bloomberg, CNBC and Reuters all noted was a growth of 5.5 percent that year - the most in the last decade.

Furthermore, NASDAQ has called Mexico "one of the world's largest developing economies," pointing out that per capita the Mexican economy is already larger than those of China, India and Brazil. In addition, UK Trade & Investment has announced that it expects Mexico's economy to surpass the UK's by the year 2040, also pointing out that the UK is one of the largest investors in Mexico.

A report by the Financial Times compared Mexico's current economic state to that of Spain 20 years ago, while IT exports from the country are expected to surpass $3.5 billion US in 2011 according to a report by Forbes Magazine. In addition, the European Union is working to improve its ties with Mexico by making it a "strategic partner," while Honda has announced intentions to invest around $800 million according to a report by USA Today. Also of note, Bloomberg covered announcements from Nissan, General Motors, Mazda and Volkswagen to invest more than $400 million each in auto manufacturing facilities throughout Mexico.

With all of this growth and international interest, it's no surprise that Bloomberg recently reported that Mexico has raised its forecast for foreign direct investment to $20 billion US - a figure that is a full 11% higher than previous predictions.

Planning for Sonoran Resorts Las Vegas Night for DIF Charity Has Kicked into Gear!

Our announcement last month about the May 25th date for this year's 2nd Annual Las Vegas Night for Charity hinted that this gala event would be even bigger and more exciting in its second year due to the overwhelming success of last year's party. And we do mean party!

Now that planning has kicked into gear, the details are getting pretty exciting. Last year's gala, in addition to all the fun and excitement of a real Las Vegas atmosphere of women dressed in evening dresses to those in shorts and comfortably dressed men expressing glee at the blackjack and roulette tables, it also turned out to be a very social evening with old friends, community leaders, celebrities, residents and regular visitors alike, catching up on each other's lives since they'd last been together, and the friendly ambiance lent itself to new introductions between strangers, many of whom, enticed by the party atmosphere, came in right off the beach and made lasting friendships through the evening.

Toward the end of the night everyone will use their stash of Charity Chips to join in on some fierce competitive bidding for the great and valuable prizes donated by local businesses and individuals to help raise money for DIF.  For those who are not frequent visitors to our little slice of paradise by the sea, DIF stands for the City of Puerto Peñasco Family Assistance program that has helped needy children and families in the area for over 35 years in times of sickness, hunger and personal need.

Everyone in attendance last year seemed to be very much aware of the charitable goals of the evening and dedicated themselves to helping by purchasing extra Charity Chips when their luck ran less than lavishly on the tables, knowing that all the money spent on those chips also went to DIF.  Everyone knew-and knows by now-that every penny spent on the tickets which are $35 dollars each will go to DIF. Last year, Las Vegas Night for Charity produced one of the largest single donations of the year for DIF. What's even better is that each $35 ticket you purchase for the affair includes $300 dollars in Charity Chips to use on the tables and all the chips you end up with at the end of the night can be used to bid on the fabulous prizes...

Carlos Slim, the Richest Man to Ever Live

Carlos Slim's father, Julién Slim Haddad, immigrated to Mexico from Lebanon at age 14. With one of his brothers, he opened a dry-goods store in Mexico City. When foreign investors fled the country following the revolution of 1910, Julián Slim resolved to remain in Mexico. By the 1920s, he had acquired a number of businesses and substantial real estate in the capital city. Julián married Doña Linda Helú, a daughter of Lebanese immigrants. The couple raised six children, of whom Carlos Slim Helú was the fifth.

Remembering the lessons of thrift he had learned from his father, he and his growing family lived modestly, while earnings from his businesses were re-invested in expansion and more acquisitions. Over the next two decades, Carlos Slim astutely acquired companies he believed were undervalued and skillfully overhauled their management. He diversified methodically, investing in real estate, then a construction equipment company, then mining interests. The portfolio of Slim companies grew to include a printer, a tobacco company and retail stores.

In 1982, Mexico plunged into an economic crisis. The government defaulted on its foreign debts, and many Mexican investors rushed to expatriate their capital. Carlos Slim's confidence in his country held firm, and he acquired the Mexican affiliates of Reynolds Aluminum, General Tire and the Sanborn's chain of stores and cafeterias. As the economy recovered, Slim's fortune grew, and his acquisitions accelerated. He acquired the Mexican interests of a number of U.S.-based brands: Firestone tires, Hershey's chocolate, Denny's coffee shops. He bought and merged a number of insurance companies into the giant firm Seguros Inbursa.

The greatest opportunity of all presented itself when the Mexican government began to divest itself of a number of state-owned monopolies. After taking the holding company public in 1990, Slim's Grupo Carso, with French and American partners, purchased the state telephone company, Teléfonos de México (Telmex). Slim took a special interest in a small component of Telmex's operations, the company's fledgling cellular service. Slim had a unique idea for building the customer base for cell phone service in Mexico's struggling economy. He sold the handsets with a month's service prepaid, and rather than sending the customers a monthly bill, Slim enabled his customers to buy prepaid phone cards, using their minutes as needed.

Telmex executives resisted the plan at first, convinced that aggressive promotion of prepaid cell phones would undermine the market for traditional landline service. As it happened, the prepaid program filled an enormous need, and the customer base grew by 66 percent every year for the next 15 years. In the wake of the dot com bust of 2000, foreign-owned cellular ventures throughout Latin America floundered. Slim scooped them up, combining cellular services in a market he understood better than anyone else...

CS Commercial Food and Supply: Go Where the Chefs Go For Quality Food Items in Puerto Peñasco

Carlos and Michelle Hopkins have been running the Puerto Peñasco branch of their 30 year old family owned restaurant supply business now for about five years. They built a solid reputation among locals, visitors and chefs supplying food and supplies to restaurants all over town from their former warehouse facility near Josefa and Benito Juarez.

Adapting to the challenging economic times along with their customers, Michelle and Carlos recently moved their service to a smaller, more manageable store front on the corner of Juan de la Barrera and Kino, right across from Numeros next to the video store.  From this location they can continue serving walk-in business and have developed a stream-lined delivery system, much like drop shipping, from their headquarters in Nogales that keeps their prestigious restaurant clientele in stock. Indeed, their loyal customers include the likes of Pan e Vino, Chef Mickey, Brothers Pizza, Boo Bar, and others. It's reasonable to assume that if CS is preferred by those popular eateries, then CS should certainly have everything we look for to fill our home cooking needs.  One visit to their new location proved that assumption to be correct.

The public is always welcome to purchase from their fully stocked depot of hard to find foods and spices (Fresh Refrigerated-yep, refrigerated-Eggs, Cheddar Cheese, English Muffins, Rye Bread, Marble Rye, Sour Dough, Real Butter, Worstershire and Soy Sauce, Dijon Mustard and a slew of Herbs and Spices), canned and bagged goods (Nestea, Tempura Mix, Varieties of Mixed Nuts, Dried Mushrooms, Baby Clams, Mandarin Oranges and much more),  kitchenware and supplies (Restaurant Quality Pots and Pans, Utensils, Aprons, Cloth Napkins, Scales, plus plastic and paper supplies) as well as a surprising array of frozen food choices usually found only in the U.S. (Lobster Tails, Pastrami, Sliced Pepperoni, Thick Quality Bacon, Sausage Patties, Chicken Wings, Thighs and Breasts to name a few) at prices you'll be hard pressed to match elsewhere. You can even get your knives sharpened at CS Supply for just $15 pesos!

During our visit, we first labeled it "The place where you go when you can't find it any place else." Later we determined CS Supply should be "The place where you start."  For inquiries or more information, call Michelle or Carlos at their Puerto Peñasco Land Line:  638-388-6556.

Five Facts You May Not Know About the Pelican; Subject of Limericks and Myths Dating to 40 Million Years.

A wonderful bird is the pelican,

His bill will hold more than his belican.

He can take in his beak

Food enough for a week,

But I'm damned if I see how the helican.

First, we'll burst the myth of the true author of this famous limerick, most often attributed to Ogden Nash. Actually, it was written by Dixon Lanier Merritt in 1910-when Ogden was only eight years old!

Five Other Facts You May Not Know about the Brown Pelican

  1. The pelican seen on our beaches in Puerto Peñasco is the Brown Pelican, the smallest of the seven species of pelicans that date back 40 million years with very little change especially in their distinct beak formation. Oddly enough, after surviving 40 million years, pelicans were almost rendered extinct in the 1950's and 60's by the use of DDT which caused the shells of their eggs to become extremely thin and fragile. Because pelicans incubate their eggs under their webbed feet, the pressure destroyed entire clutches of up to three eggs. They were placed on the endangered species list in 1970. DDT was banned in 1972 allowing the population to begin recovering and they were delisted in 2009 with a population estimated at approximately 300,000.
  2. You've probably noticed the Brown Pelicans floating rather high in the water around our beaches. That's because they have a complex network of subcutaneous air sacs under their skin located across their throat, breast and undersides of the wings. Plus they have air sacs in their bones. These air sacs keep the Pelican remarkably buoyant in the water and their fully webbed feet make them rather fast swimmers.
  3. Pelicans can fly for a hundred miles in search of food due to a fibrous layer from their breast muscles that can hold their wings rigid in a horizontal position allowing them to glide and soar at altitudes of up to 10,000 ft by catching thermals.
  4. Likewise, you've surely seen these gregarious characters flying in groups so close to the surface of the sea it looks like their wings are going to catch the surface any moment. Actually, they are experts at using what is known as "ground effect" that allows air to flow between their wings and the water surface which reduces drag and causes a strong upward surge against the bird saving energy and increasing flight control. As well as producing some wonderment in the eyes of the spectator!
  5. Brown Pelicans are daring divers, plunging for fish from as high as 70 feet in the air which they can spot by virtue of the gift of great vision.  They're a sight to watch both preparing to dive and diving as it looks quite dangerous the way they extend their necks and tuck their wings in at the last moment before splash down. Well, in fact, it is quite dangerous.  Almost every time you've seen a pelican carcass on the beach it is there because of a miscalculated diving position that resulted in a broken neck, as infrequent as such mishaps are.

2nd Annual Tequila Festival on May 4th-Promises To Be Even Better Than Last Year!

After being blown away by last year's premier presentation of pure and colorful Mexican Folkloric music, singing and dancing, it's hard to believe how it could be topped this year. However, after speaking with Martín Martínez, head of the organizing committee again this year along with Laura Palacio and Carmen Martens, we're convinced that everyone is in for a night of spectacular entertainment, good food and of course great pure Mexican tequila!

The venue once again is the Whale Hill Amphitheatre, which has received a detailed makeover assuring that the amazing light show against the natural rock cliff background will be aglow all evening to shock even the wildest imaginations of young and old, expats and natives, residents and visitors along with the sounds and colors of "Traditional Old Mexico." Thanks to the creative talents of Socorro Gonzalez and Nina Mier of Cine Club Primera Toma, this year will have old-time Mexican movies showing continuously against one section of the giant cliff.

Even though he won't release the names until he has signed contracts in hand, Martín assures us that he is in final negotiations with several nationally famous Mariachis and singers to bring even more excitement to this year's event. Like last year, there will be highly talented Mexican Folkloric Ballet Dancers and, again topping the cuteness charts will be the young children dancing to traditional folklore songs in full costume!

Martín expects more exhibitors this year representing tequilas, restaurants, developers and others. If you are interested in having an exhibitor space at the Tequila Festival, please contact Martín Martínez by email atmarrmartinez@hotmail.com or on his local cell at 638-380-5496.

A promising new event at the Festival this year is the "Margarita Contest" that will be organized by the Mayan Resort Food and Beverage department and sponsored by Tequila Peñasco. The contest will be  made up of 10 bartenders from mostly local establishments competing for a prize of $500 USD for the "Best" Margarita as determined by four judges who will be basing their votes on Creativity, Originality and, of course, Taste. In addition to the $500 prize, the winner will have bragging rights until the 3rdAnnual Tequila Festival next year...

A Different Kind of Recipe this Month:
Homemade Febrese

I ran across this little trick a while back and thought that I would share this "recipe" instead of my usual food recipe this month. Having kids, dogs, rabbits, and a parrot, we go through a lot of the stuff and this little trick saves some real cash - not to mention the fact that you can't buy Febrese locally. Before you complain to me, I do understand that it isn't exactly the same, but it is pretty close, and for the difference in price and convenience, I'm all in.

What you'll need:

1/8 Cup of fabric softener (I used Downy April Fresh)
2 tablespoons Baking Soda
Hot tap water
Spray bottle (I used my empty 27 oz. Febreze bottle)

Preparation:

Using a funnel, pour fabric softener and baking soda into your spray bottle. Fill spray bottle with hot tap water and shake well. Don't forget to twist the nozzle over to the LOCK position if you're using a Febreze bottle, or you will make a mess. Simple as that! Now go spray every fabric surface in your house and take a nap on your very fresh smelling couch.

Store-bought Febreze: $5.59
Homemade Febreze: $0.15
Total Savings: $5.44 OR 97.3%

The Legend of the Chupacabra

As dusk falls over the arid countryside of Northern Mexico, the farmer heads home, leaving his cows, horses and goats snug in their pens. Lurking in the shadows, however, is a hairless gargoyle with long, razor-sharp teeth: the legendary chupacabra. He has picked out his victim for this night: a fat, slow cow. As the farmer turns out the lights in his home, the chupacabra goes to work. In the morning, the farmer will find nothing but a desiccated husk in the stall that once housed his best milking cow.

Since about 1990, legends have grown all over Latin America (particularly Mexico and Puerto Rico) and the United States of the "chupacabra," (whose name translates from the Spanish as "goat-sucker") a nocturnal monster that drinks animal blood. "Sightings" of the beast have grown exponentially, and there have even been some photos and videos taken, although definitive proof (such as a live chupacabra in custody) continue to elude the legions of people who claim that their animals have been attacked.

Although eyewitness descriptions vary, most agree that the chupacabra is humanoid or canine in general appearance, although some have described it as reptilian. Skin is gray, scaly and may have sharp spines or quills. It is often, but not always, described with a long snout. In general, they're smaller than a human, but some describe them as being as large as a bear. They can run very quickly and leap great distances. Some witnesses claim that they have wings and a tail. Naturally, it boasts impressive fangs that allow it to better wound its victims to suck out the blood. Although a chupacabra may sound vaguely like a vampire, it is not considered to be "undead" in the traditional sense.

The myth of the "chupacabra" isn't as old as many people think. The first sightings and incidents occurred in the early 1990's in Puerto Rico, but it since has become a firm part of Latin American folklore. It has even made appearances in such pop-culture favorites such as Scooby-doo movies and the X-files television show.

Is the Chupacabra Real?

That depends on who you ask. People in Canovanas, Puerto Rico, certainly think so: they blame the chupacabra for the suspicious deaths of more than 150 farm animals in 1995 and several locals claim to have seen it. In 1996, farmers in Calderon, in Northern Mexico, took up axes and rifles and formed vigilante groups to hunt down an alleged chupacabra that had been terrorizing local goats. These are just a few of the scores of chupacabra reports from all over both American continents.

Naysayers consider the chupacabra to be a sort of Latin American Bigfoot. No living or dead chupacabras have ever been found. Zoologists are at a loss to declare what sort of species may be behind the attacks, although some say it may be a sort of large bat. "Photos" of the chupacabra abound on the internet, few of which are even remotely convincing.

Real or not, the chupacabra has entered the realm of myth, folklore, and pop culture, so it seems that it is here to stay. So, be very careful in remote areas at night in Mexico because, you just never know...

Have a great April. Until next month, Salud, Dinero, y Amor... y tiempo para disfrutarlos!

Saludos,

Jim Ringquist

Buy a Sonoran Resorts Condo with a Self Directed IRA

Can you Really Buy it with your IRA?

Yes you can, and we can show you how!

Step 1: Self Directed Real Estate IRA: The first step is to establish an Unlimited IRA with a registered self-directed custodian who will allow the IRA to participate in non-traditional investments. We recommend Guidant Financial who can facilitate this for you.

Step 2: Rollovers : Once your new Self Directed Real Estate IRA has been established the facilitator will request, monitor and direct the transfers from your previous IRA holder(s) to the new self-directed account. This process usually takes 2 to 3 weeks to complete and relies primarily upon your previous IRA custodian's ability to make the transfers in a timely manner.

Step 3: Limited Liability Company (LLC): An important part of the process is to establish a Limited Liability Company (LLC) for your Self Directed IRA. This serves as the investing platform for the retirement plan and will allow true self-direction & diversification not seen in normal IRA plans. The facilitator will customize this entity to conform to all IRS rules & regulations. It is vital that you work with a qualified facilitator to structure the LLC correctly.

Step 4: Funding: After your newly established self-directed IRA has received the transfer(s) of funds from your previous retirement plans and the LLC has been established, it is time to direct the initial capitalization of the LLC. The facilitator will direct your new custodian to invest your IRA in the LLC. Once the transaction has taken place, your self-directed IRA is the owner of the LLC, holding most, if not all of the cash in the LLC checking account.

Step 5: Investing: Your IRA, indirectly through the LLC, is now ready to invest in a beautiful Sonoran Resorts Condo. You now have Total Checkbook Control of your IRA, and can purchase the condo for your IRA simply by writing a check.

Some of this sounds complicated, but it's fairly easy with the right professional assistance. IRA Real Estate Investing makes perfect sense for many investors, especially today when there are still so many great deals available.

Special Offers

We are constantly looking for new ideas to help us sell our listings. Here are a couple offers that you may or may not be familiar with:

Promotional Stay:
If you know of someone who may be interested in getting to know our resorts better with the idea of a possible purchase, we will offer them a 2 night stay for only $99. No tax, no cleaning fee. However, we are not a rental agency. We try to limit these promotional stays to potential Buyers.

Finders Fee:
If anyone refers a Buyer to us, we will  pay them up to 1.5% of the sales price. There is no need to be licensed as Mexico does not have that requirement at this time. Just give us the name and contact information of a potential Buyer before we have any contact with them and, if they buy, we will send a check for up to 1.5% of the sales price to the referrer. This is only valid if they are new clients, unknown to us. Once we make contact with someone, they can no longer be referred by an outside source. Please contact me personally for the details.
