November is one fine month here in Puerto Penasco.
Now, if we can just get past the US elections and get on with life...
Actually, living here full time and having Mexican cable TV, I don't see much at all about the elections. It seems that life just goes on as usual here regardless of who slings mud at whom just an hour North of us.
The nice weather is holding out just fine with the days in the high 70s to low 80s and the nights in the low 60s. This is great sleeping weather. Windows open and still warm getting into bed and a bit chilly getting out. The cooler weather always makes it a little harder to get out of bed. Although, getting up when it's still dark outside may have something to do with it too.
It's hard to believe that it is already November. Holiday season is coming right up and so is our 2nd Annual Charity Food Drive. The food collected will once again go to the City of Puerto Penasco official DIF charity. We are starting earlier this year to include our November visitors. Please drop off non-perishable foods at any of the Sonoran Resorts sales offices just off of the main lobbies. Every little bit helps! With all the devastation caused by hurricane Sandy, I thought that it would be a good idea to provide a link for donations to help them as well. The National Association of Realtors has set up a site to accept donations. You can donate by clicking this LINK to the site. Once again, I hope that you enjoy the newsletter, and recommend it to your friends. Thanks for the help in spreading the word. Please check out some of our condos for sale along the right column. You can see all of our listings by going to our website:
Don't forget, if you have email service through Yahoo or Gmail, you may need to click "View Entire Message" to see the entire newsletter.
Enjoy your November and, as always, please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with anything at all. I'm happy to be of service.
Sincerely,
Jim Ringquist

Sonoran Resorts Sponsor 2nd Annual Holiday Food Drive for City of Puerto Peñasco and DIF Charities
For the second year Sonoran Resorts are encouraging everyone to donate whatever non-perishable foods you can spare or choose to donate to be distributed to the many families in Puerto Peñasco who have been affected by the devastating crash of the tourism-based economy here over the last several years. Many of these families find themselves in need of the basics for survival, like food for their children.
Sonoran Resorts Director of Sales and Marketing, Jim Ringquist, wanted to create a way to provide ongoing help to the needy in our economically torn community and last year determined that a Holiday Food Drive would provide the most expedient, timely and direct benefit to those who needed help the most.
Within days he had gathered the support of the city and of DIF (Department of Integral Family Development) the 35 year old municipal family assistance organization, and launched the first drive, the success of which was gratefully appreciated by DIF.
This year, Jim has met with and gained the enthusiastic blessings of the new administration, including Profra. Rafaela Felix Bernal, new President of DIF and esteemed wife of the newly elected Honorable Mayor of Puerto Peñasco, Profr. Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta.
By government policy, a Mayor may only serve one term of three years. It is also the tradition that the Mayor's wife becomes the President of the important DIF organization. She then brings aboard her management staff and sets the mission and goals for the organization for the next three years. Since taking office on September 16th of this year, the new administration has already written and published an impressive DIF Analysis and Work Plan for the next three years.
Non-perishable food items are treasures for the needy, and readily accessible to our generous visitors. We gratefully request that you remember the less fortunate on your next visit to Rocky Point and stop by one of the sales offices at any of the Sonoran Resorts or stop by the Tourism and Visitors Assistance Office to donate an item or two for this great cause. If you prefer, cash donations are also being accepted.
If you are not planning a trip to Rocky Point over this holiday season and would still like to donate, you may email Jim Ringquist at the email address on the poster above for details on how you can help. You may also call one of the numbers listed on the poster.
Sonoran Resorts are proud and privileged to conduct our Second Annual Holiday Food Drive in cooperation with the City of Puerto Peñasco and DIF Charities. And we sincerely look forward to your food donations.

JJ's Cantina-Cholla Bay Icon; Rocky Point Legend; Joe Anacleto's Alter Ego
The sign says, "If you haven't been to JJ's Cantina, you haven't been to Rocky Point." That's about as close as you can get to Truth in Advertising. Folks don't simply ask you if you've been to JJ's, they ask you if you've been to JJ's yet.
And when you do go to JJ's Cantina, it's not mandatory that you meet Joe Anacleto, founder and daily fixture at this historic waterside watering hole and northern Sea of Cortez launching point for some of the best sports fishing on our planet, but you probably will meet him. Joe's a tall, ruggedly handsome, dark tanned, sixty-something with a full head of silvery salt and pepper wavy hair and mustache that stops at each end of his near constant smile, which he spreads contagiously, complimented by his radio quality voice interjecting good humor into conversations of his patrons, most of whom have been his friends for nearly 30 years. A Hartford, Connecticut native, Joe was raised by his Portuguese parents who were both immigrants, although they didn't meet until they were residents of the Portuguese barrio of Hartford, only then learning they'd grown up just a few hours from each other in Portugal...

Beach, Sunset and Bagpipes = an Amazing Grace
How do you enhance one of the absolutely divine sunsets we are lucky enough to experience almost daily here in Puerto Peñasco? Imagine the beautiful "Amazing Grace" played on Scottish bagpipes timed to match the path of the golden sun as it melts into the western horizon in a crimson crescendo across the calm blue Sea of Cortez; a cacophony of color and mesmerizing music that will carry you as far into the heavens as your imagination allows.
You don't have to imagine this beautiful sunset sound and scene if you're around the pool or beach in front of the Sonoran Spa Resort Condominiums this week, or any fall or spring school break week as Lori Clark arrives on the beach most every evening with her historic instrument and pays tribute to the beauty and miracle of sunset and the blessing of being able to enjoy it. This moving experience stops everyone around her in their tracks as they hang on to every note of several arrangements she plays leading up to the climax with "Amazing Grace", and is always humbled by the number of people who take the time to come up and thank her or compliment her musical skills. Her love of this instrument shows in her pleasant smile and willingness to talk about it and her music. Lori has been visiting Rocky Point twice a year, during fall and spring break since around 1998 and staying at the Sonoran Spa with her sister who owns a condo there, and who introduced her to our little slice of paradise. Lori and her sister are the only sister team employed by the City Tucson Fire Department. They are both paramedics...

Mexico Has World's Highest Level of Energy Security by Brian Wingfield
T Mexico, which has monopoly power over its oil production and sales, has the world's highest level of energy security, according to a U.S. Chamber of Commerce study of the largest energy-consuming nations. The government-owned Petroleos Mexicanos ranks among the world's largest oil companies while Mexico's energy expenditures and carbon-dioxide emissions per person are relatively low, according to the study released today that reviews data for 25 nations from 1980 to 2010. "They are a very resource-rich country with very low energy use per person," Karen Harbert, president of the Chamber's Institute for 21st Century Energy, said today at a Washington news conference, noting Mexico may not hold the status in the future. "Oil production is going down in Mexico and their transportation use is going way up." Energy production has been a national security concern for the U.S. at least since the 1970s Arab oil embargo caused gasoline prices to soar. The U.S. imported about 45 percent of its petroleum last year, with about 22 percent originating in the Middle East, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. U.S. dependence on energy imports has declined since 2005, amid the global economic slowdown and increased reliance on other fuels including natural gas, the agency said. Ranked Seventh The U.S., which ranked seventh in the energy-security report, may become a net exporter of natural gas by the end of this decade, sooner than a previous government estimate of reaching that status by about 2022, EIA Administrator Adam Sieminski said at U.S. Chamber event to release the industry group's report... No Crosses to Bear for this Generous Couple
Mike Bibb seems to have no crosses to bear. That may very well be because he donates all his custom-made crosses to churches everywhere. Ten of those intricately handmade woodworks of art reside right here in our little slice of paradise inside and outside three churches plus the Esperanza Children's Home.
After retiring from UPS ten years ago, Mike was soon immersed in his life-long hobby and artistic love for woodworking, a creative outlet his long career prevented him from pursuing to the degree his "inner artist" required.
It doesn't take long after meeting Mike and Eilene, his wife of 40 years, a sweet, petite, dedicated, redhead with a captivating smile, to know that it's likely her understanding of the complex artist-craftsman in him that keeps Mike organized and grounded (unless she's holding a ladder for him to scale high off the ground to secure one of his works of art to a structural beam, reciting a complete list of everything he already knew he needed just to make sure he didn't forget anything before he stepped on the first rung ). It's also obvious that Mike is not without his contribution to the depth of this couple's love and best-friendship. You know that his sense of humor, so consistent that it seems to run on its own, just using Mike as a conduit, finding humor in just about everything with descriptions ranging from self-deprecating to hilariously observant, has kept their dark times light and has reliably sown the seeds that reap a steady flow of happiness in their lives, even, one could imagine, when Mike, despite the prophetic warning of Eilene, occasionally smashes his finger with that trusty hammer he ordinarily wields with such accuracy.
We met them for an interview out at the Good Samaritan Church of God where Mike and Eilene were installing two of his custom crosses, a donation he had offered after reading our blog article of last January about the Church and dedicated intentions of Pastors Edgar and Alma Cabrera (read that story here: http://www.sonoranresorts.mx/?p=3155).
Mike worked quickly and efficiently hanging the large inside cross...

Adopt-a-Classroom Brings Supplies to Twelve Schools for the Fall Session
Mark and Barb Olszewski pulled their pick up to the front gate of "Elvira Fabiola Ceceña Rubio", the very first primary school they adopted 10 years ago, the federalized school that motivated them to found their Adopt-a-Classroom Charity Organization. ( http://www.rockypointclassroom.com) Since then, the number of schools that are beneficiaries of the truck loads of supplies their Facebook and forum followers regularly bring down from the U.S. has grown to 12 schools including one in Port Lobos, a several hour drive down the coast. On this day, the entire student body was outside under the covered pavilion participating in the International Peace Day celebration that is recognized in over a hundred countries each year in October, and Elvira school had over a hundred tiny students dressed in costumes depicting the dress and culture of the Latin American countries as they stepped center stage in small groups and sang, delivered orations or danced interpretations of the varied Latin folklore, faces painted with the colors of Brazil, Argentina, Peru, interspersed with costumes of gypsies, Charros, Angels, at least half with handmade Doves of Peace they waved from the end of a long stick. As immersed as these children were in the roles they were assigned to play that day, at least a hundred sets of wee little eyes were aware of the carts of supplies Mark and Barb were hauling into a small room outside the Director's office...

Tempe dentist returns 'blessing' to kids in need
By Aaron Wylam
The Republic | azcentral.com
When Tempe dentist Kris Putrasahan has free time, he heads down to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, to give dental care to about 30 kids who otherwise may not see a dentist.
The children's home Putrasahan and his companions work with, Esperanza Para Los Niños (Hope for the Children), fosters residents from ages 5 to 18 whose parents are in prison or unable to care for them, often brought in by government workers. The facility has separate sleep and study quarters and most kids attend local public schools.
"They are some of the most pleasant and well-behaved kids I've met," said Putrasahan's wife, Maya. "The older kids help take care of the younger ones. They share everything together including chores."
Putrasahan donates his time to provide work, such as checkups and cleanings, as well as work that may cost between $275 and $300 in the United States.
Putrasahan was born in Indonesia and grew up in Singapore. He came to the United States in 1988, earned his bachelor's degree at Arizona State University and then attended dental school at California's Loma Linda University. He returned to Arizona in 1996 where he began practicing dentistry in a group setting before opening his own office, Logos Dentistry, in Tempe in 2011.
In Arizona, Putrasahan was introduced to Dr.Richard Martin, who nine years ago began making clinical trips to Puerto Peñasco, also known as Rocky Point.
Putrasahan's wife, their 15-year-old son, Josh, and 13-year-old daughter, Marisa, aid in the clinics, sometimes acting as dental assistants or preparing meals and playing sports with the kids.
"Even though my family has only been there five times, we are already treated as part of the Esperanza family," said Marisa, who this year hopes to work with UthBuild, a group that helps build homes, and provide needy families in Rocky Point with food and clothing...

How Long Until it's Gone? It may surprise you how long trash last in our oceans
Although we don't see much trash on Sandy Beach or floating in the sea around Sandy Beach, if you have ever ventured to any of the more remote beaches outside of town, you have undoubtedly seen the bottles and debris that has washed ashore from who knows where. It may not be a big problem for us now but it is never too early to take precautions and to learn more about how to prevent this beautiful area from having a problem in the future. There are many good Samaritans who walk the beaches regularly picking up trash as they go. And, I'd like to think that most of us pick up at least what we have brought with us, if not a few more things that we may find. But, of course, there are those in the other camp who don't think twice about leaving everything behind to become someone elses problem either today or one day in the future. I found it interesting (and distressing) to discover just exactly how long some of that trash really does last in the ocean. The photo above is a little hard to read but just a few examples are: Diapers - 450 years Plastic 6-Pack Ring - 400 years Aluminum Can - 200 years Styrofoam Cup - 50 years Cigarette Butts - 1-5 years Pretty scary huh? Well, there are some organizations who are fully aware of the issue and have been working hard to help. NOAA is fighting this problem.
The NOAA Marine Debris Program works in the U.S. and around the world to research, reduce, and prevent debris in our oceans and coastal waterways. Much of this work is done in partnership with other agencies, non-governmental organizations, academia, industry, and private businesses. Small steps lead to big results. Fighting the marine debris problem begins at home. - Try to cut back on the amount of trash you produce. - Opt for reusable items instead of single-use products. - Recycle as much of your trash as you can. - Join local efforts to pick up trash. - Keep streets, sidewalks, parking lots, and storm drains free of trash-they can empty into our oceans and waterways. "Everybody Loves Laura" Birthday Surprise Pulled Off with Pizzazz!
When the tight-knit Sonoran Resorts sales team decided to throw a surprise birthday party for their lovable multi-tasking sales admin assistant, Laura Valencia, they handled it with the same cool professionalism and warm family style harmony with which they handle their professional relations-cooperation, thoroughness and a dash of colorful Pizzazz!
Sometimes, no matter how much effort is extended, pulling off a complete surprise for someone is as much of a surprise for both sides when it does come off as planned
If the intended success depended on the detailed planning and preparation of sales team members and self-appointed organizers, Jennifer Ridsdel and Dolores Vargas, the party was going to be a hit in pink and white for everyone, especially the victim-uhh-Birthday Girl.
Ah, but suspense still hung on the ability of Laura's two good friends, Ursula Miranda and Erika Curiel of Sea Side Reservations, to keep Laura blissfully unwitting of what awaited at the top of the stairs in Capone's Restaurant as they lured her to the venue, then casually up the stairs and ...BAM! ZAP! POW! It's obvious the surprise on Laura's face was genuine; and since pictures are worth a thousand words, we'll let them do the talking for the rest of this story!

5 Things You Didn't Know About the U.S. - Mexico Relationship
By STEPHEN KEPPEL
On the sidelines of the first U.S.-Mexico border trade conference held last week in Arizona, a group stared at a map of the United States. The 50 states were colored various shades of blue. The darker the state was, the more it exported to Mexico. As expected, California, Arizona and Texas were dark blue but so were Nebraska, Michigan and Wisconsin. The map showed what many on the border have known for awhile: Mexico is vital to the U.S. economy.
A buzz is developing around the strength of Mexico's growing middle class and what it could mean for U.S. businesspeople and politicians in the border region. But there is also frustration that when it comes to Mexico, the United States -- particularly lawmakers in Washington, D.C. -- continue to focus almost exclusively on security, drugs and illegal immigration.
While these issues are real, so is Mexico's economic success story. Here are five ways it impacts the United States that you probably didn't know about...

If Rocky Point becomes a Home Port for cruise ships - 10 things that will change
By: Annita Kaltenbaugh via Rocky Point Times
Seriously, everyone's talking about it... a new port in our town, a cruise terminal on Sandy Beach. Will it happen? Will a cruise ship terminal be built in Puerto Peñasco? If so, one thing is certain, change will come.
If you have ever taken a cruise, do you remember the days at port? Those who have cruised, know, when a ship comes into a port or leaves from a port; the city fills up with tourists. Tourists, who want to explore the area, tourists who want to try the local foods, buy souvenirs, local arts and jewelry.
Upon exiting the ship, the passengers either walk off the boat or take a tender into the dock with the ship parked offshore. Vendors from the town are lined up as soon as the passengers hit land, offering excursions for the day or tours to the hot spots. Taxis will be waiting to take visitors to specific areas of town or buses to shuttle to the local shopping area. Can you see buses in Old Port, Rodeo Drive and along the beaches?
Things will change, that is a guarantee. I'm not a fortune teller, but here are 10 things that will definitely happen if Rocky Point is a debarkation area for a cruise or a port on a cruise lines itinerary...

Authentic Mexican Food
What's "real" Mexican food, anyway?
Mexican food encompasses a rich, diverse culinary culture. The earliest agricultural staples of the Aztecs, who dominated northern Mexico, and the Mayans, who occupied the southeastern Yucatan, were beans, squash and chile peppers. Maize or nixtamal (corn), "the Gift of the Gods," is the cornerstone of Mexican cuisine. It appears in almost everything: tortillas, enchiladas, tamales, tacos, even dessert (sopapillas). Early Mexican dishes included atole (hominy porridge, which evolved into Pozole soup), tortillas, and tamales, both savory and sweet.
Spanish Influence
The region also yielded avocados, peanuts, tomatoes, squash, and coconuts. But it was the conquest of Mexico by Spain in 1521 that most influenced the Mexican cuisine we know today. The Spaniards introduced new livestock--pigs, cows, and sheep had never been seen before in the New World--as well as dairy products like cheese. They also brought herbs and spices, including garlic, sugar cane, and coriander. Coriander leaves, known as cilantro, are featured in many Mexican dishes.
Spanish influences evident in modern Mexican cuisine include quesadillas, now a Mexican street-cart staple, and burritos. Until the conquistadors arrived, there was no wheat in Mexico. Burritos are still practically unheard of in southern Mexico, where tortillas are made the traditional way, with corn. The colonization of Mexico also brought the assimilation of cuisines and cooking techniques from France, the Caribbean, Portugal, West Africa, and South America.
Chile, not Chili
There are reportedly more than 60 varieties of chile peppers, from very mild Anaheims to fiery hot habaneros. Jalapeños are the most recognizable, alongside chipotles--jalapeños that have been dried and smoked--the primary flavor in adobo sauce. A favorite Mexican main course, Chiles Rellenos, features large poblano chiles stuffed with cheese or spicy meat (picadillo). Jalapeño poppers, an American bar-menu staple, are a version of these.
Chili, on the other hand, as in spicy chili con carne, is an entirely American version unrelated to the Mexican pepper, and not a Mexican dish. Other non-traditional, gringo versions of Mexican food include the American-born nacho and refried beans, a Tex-Mex revision of frijoles refritos. Tex-Mex food is a modern hybrid incorporating southwestern cowboy fare. Looking for a telltale sign that your Mexican food isn't authentically Mexican? Mexican dishes never use American yellow cheese. Queso Monterey, Queso Chihuahua, and Queso Fresco are used instead.

Accents and Punctuation, It's all about the symbols. And English has it's share of oddities as well
Accents are marks placed on the vowels (a, e, i, o, u) to indicate where the stress in pronunciation falls. Punctuation is a set of marks used in writing (e.g. full stop or period, comma, quotation marks, brackets or parenthesis, etc.) The most common Spanish accent is the acute accent: á, é, í, ó, ú. This accent does not change the way a letter is pronounced, but it shows where the emphasis falls when pronouncing a word. The acute accent is also used to distinguish between two words that are written and pronounced in the same way, but have different meanings: for instance, 'él [he]' vs. 'el [the]'. Some Spanish words are written with a diaeresis ( ¨ ). In Spanish, the diaeresis is used in the groups 'güi' and 'güe' to indicate that that vowel 'ü' is pronounced (if the diaeresis is not present, the vowel 'u' is not spoken). Spanish has also another mark, called 'tilde'. This mark is used only on the letter 'ñ' to represent a specific sound (similar to the English 'onion'). Examples of accents: * lápiz [pencil] * café [coffee] * país [country] * canción [song] * tú [you] * argüir [to argue] * España [Spain] In written Spanish, a system of double punctuation is used. An upside down question mark is placed at the beginning of a question and the usual question mark is written at the end of it. Similarly, an inverted exclamation mark indicates the beginning of an exclamation, while the ordinary exclamation mark shows the end of the sentence. Examples of double punctuation:
* ¿Qué hora es ? [What time is it?] * ¡Cuidado ! [Watch out!]
