Greetings!

This is one of my favorite quotes:

"Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another."

Written by Erma Bombeck, an American humorist, the quote eloquently summarizes the tremendous effect that volunteers have on our society. At the Free Clinic, our volunteers do everything from answering the phones to providing direct patient care. Our medical clinic was founded 20 years ago by the hard work of a group of volunteers who believed that everyone in our community - whether they have insurance or not - deserve access to quality, compassionate healthcare. We could not serve the volume of patients that we do - as well as we do, and as cost-effectively as we do - without the tireless efforts of the many volunteers who come to our Clinic each and every day to help their neighbors in need. While Volunteer Appreciation Week doesn't officially begin until April 21st, I want to say "thank you" on behalf of myself, my staff, and all of the patients of the Free Clinic. Thank you for making our work possible.

Yours in health,
Margaret Hersh
Executive Director

ARDC: Improving Children's Oral Health

Did you know the first oral health examination is recommended at the time of the eruption of the first tooth and no later than 12 months of age? At our affiliate organization, the Augusta Regional Dental Clinic, services are provided to children with Medicaid benefits. The Medicaid dental benefits for children are very comprehensive and cover the full range of medically necessary dental services, including relief of pain and infection, restoration of teeth, maintenance of dental health, and orthodontic care or braces.

The Augusta Regional Dental Clinic also offers an innovative school- based sealant program called "ORCAS," which stands for "Oral Health, Resources, Care and Prevention, Assessments and Sealants." This past year our mobile dental program visited 11 area schools and provided preventive care for over 800 elementary students. The dentist and ARDC team identify oral health issues through screening, assessment and referral for treatment, and provide preventive care through the application of sealants and fluoride, and provide a medical home for restorative care and regular preventive treatment.

Scheduling regular dental checkups for you and your children is an investment in your overall health. ARDC is currently accepting new Medicaid-eligible adults and children. Appointments can be made by calling 540/332-5619.

ARFC Staff Changes

We sadly say good-bye to three Clinic staff members: Jill Conley, RPh, our pharmacist; Deona Houff, pharmacy technician; and Betsy Solomon, RN, patient care coordinator. We will miss them and wish them well in their future endeavors. We are pleased to announce the addition of three new staff members: Benn Legum, RPh, our new pharmacist who has been the Clinic's Pharmacist-in-Charge since the founding of the Clinic; Anthony "Tony" Kincaid, a new pharmacy technician and former volunteer; and Regina O'Donnell, RN, a new patient care coordinator and former volunteer. Please join us in welcoming them aboard!
