Join us July 16 and help our kids be
workforce ready!

This summer marks the first session of our UrbanFUTURE Summer Leadership Academy! We spent months preparing and building a computer lab in our downtown office on Olive Street to accommodate our students as they focus on academics, leadership and character formation, college financial aid and scholarship awareness, and job search training and resume writing. We are wrapping up week one of a three week session, and the energy in the office has been palpable! On Friday we will be taking field trips to local businesses, and this week students visited Anheuser-Busch corporate headquarters. They toured the facilities and learned first-hand from General Manager Jim Bicklein about the packaging process and machinery used at the plant, as well as about professions in the industry. It was a fun learning experience for all! Thank you Jim and team.

We'd love for you to join us! The event is free, with live music and a raffle for some fabulous prizes including several sets of Cardinals Green Seats and a stay at a luxury residence in Punta, Mita Mexico (or take $2500 in cash!). Additionally, for $25, you'll get a collectable cup and have access to bottomless craft beer and Pappy's barbecue! We are excited to welcome young professional groups from local corporations, including Monsanto, Wells Fargo and TrailNet. It will prove an excellent spot to network, sip a drink, visit our newly-minted computer lab, and enjoy the summer in our beautiful city, all while supporting our students as they become workforce ready.

Sincere wishes for a safe and joyful summer. I hope to see you all on the 16th!

Our students and families enjoy the Awards Banquet
at Fanning Middle School

On May 12th at Busch Middle School and May 13th at Fanning Middle School, we held our Annual Awards Banquets to celebrate all of our students' incredible accomplishments throughout the year. Awards were given for academic achievement, student and parent involvement, character development, and success in literacy and academics. Mentors, volunteers, parents, and our real-world business partners were also recognized for their meaningful contributions. View all the photos from the banquets here, and witness the true joy and excitement shared by all those in the UrbanFUTURE family on those special nights.

This year we also recognized our Real World Business and Educational Partners who have continued to support UrbanFUTURE students with their deep commitment to making our kids workforce ready. Thank you to again to RehabCare, UMSL, the Saint Louis Science Center and the SLU Micah Program for your dedication to our kids. Your support means that our students have access to real careers in fields that interest them.  We can't thank you enough!

UF Students visit the Natural History Museum in Washington DC

On June 8th, we embarked once again for a cross-country journey to visit our nation's capital, Washington DC! With 35 UrbanFUTURE students in tow, we boarded a bus and headed east. We spent 5 days exploring the sites and monuments of DC, visiting the National Archives, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials, the MLK Memorial, the Vietnam Wall, the Air & Space Museum, the Natural History Museum, the Library of Congress and Arlington Cemetery. Needless to say, it was a busy few days!

UF Students at the Tidal Basin

To earn a spot on the trip, UrbanFUTURE students had to complete and present a research paper on a DC monument or landmark. Finally seeing these places in person after so many months of study made for a very meaningful trip for all.

On the last morning of our trip, in front of the Capitol Building, we had the opportunity to meet and chat with Missouri Senator Roy Blunt! He talked about his job and responsibilities, as well as the importance of personal character and values.

A special thank you to the Monsanto Fund, whose generous support helped make this trip a reality.

Rising 9th grader Alex Dupilka
UrbanFUTURE Leadership Academy Student Interview
Meet Alex Dupilka

Alex is a rising 9th grader from Busch Middle School. She will be attending Gateway High School in the fall. She is excited to be part of the inaugural Summer Leadership Academy! We sat down with Alex and asked her a few questions about her experience in the Academy so far.

So what's a typical day in the Summer Leadership Academy?
"First we arrive at the Olive Office and we find out what we are working on for the day. We start out with working on the computers with Achieve3000 and StudyIsland programs. We get a break in between each activity before lunch. After lunch, we have our Leadership Hour in which we talk about how to be better leaders in our schools and future careers."

Share with us your thoughts on the first week of programming.
"It's fun. There's lots of learning and testing, although we do get to go outside during the day."

Why would you consider this Leadership Academy for rising 8th graders next year?
"I think because it's the summer, most students forget a lot of stuff during the break. This academy helps us work on skills that keep our minds ready for the next school year."

Any big plans after the Leadership Academy?
"I am looking forward to the Six Flags Trip at the end of the Academy. And my birthday is coming up this month. I will be turning 14 years old. I am also looking forward to spending time with my family before school starts."
