Trivia Emcee Dan Buck with UF Students

It's been another exciting month for UrbanFUTURE; our UF kids have continued to accomplish great things. Performances, classes and guest speakers are keeping students enthusiastic. Field trips have been plentiful, and as the weather warms and the snow melts we'll continue to venture out into the community to seek out learning experiences and enrichment in order to better prepare our students for the workforce.
UrbanFUTURE's annual Classrooms to Careers Trivia Night was held on Saturday, February 1st at Wells Fargo Learning Center. Emcee Dan Buck of Cardinal Glennon Children's Foundation tested the knowledge of the crowd and helped UrbanFUTURE raise over $40,000 for our programming. We are deeply grateful to all those who braved the weather to come out and support our students. Town & Style St. Louis was on hand to photograph the night, check out their gallery of images. Thank you for making this night a remarkable success, we hope to see you again next year!
Rebel Rock 2014 Step Team
Another annual fundraiser, Rebel Rock, was held on February 22nd at the Saint Louis Priory School. It was an absolute blast! You can view a video of the performance if you missed it; we are all so proud of the UrbanFUTURE drum line and step team who did such a fantastic job! UF students were also able to spend a field day at Priory that Saturday, participating in activities all morning including a workshop with the Maryville College Music Therapy Department, adding to the excitement and value of the experience. Thanks as well to Jordan Heimburger of the School of Rock and Kristi Carson of KSHE65 and 105.7 THE POINT for your participation in this fun event!
As we look forward to the Spring, we are happy to report that UrbanFUTURE enrollment is up, as is our students' achievements. 64% of UF students at Fanning Middle School are now reading at or above grade level! And 55% of our UF students at Busch Middle School are at or above grade level in Math. Test scores continue to rise, and our students now have access to Study Island, an incredible e-learning platform. Together, with the collaboration of our parents, the community and our dedicated staff and volunteers, we are succeeding in our mission to better prepare our students for a prosperous future in the workforce. Thank you for YOUR contribution and continued support!

UF student at Harris-Stowe State University

The month kicked off with the UrbanFUTURE students visiting Harris-Stowe State University to hear university students perform spoken word poetry, and to perform their own works. It was an inspiring event, and our UF kids were fabulous! They confidently showcased their public speaking skills, which they learned from their Explore! Careers Classes.

Fanning's Parent Open House took place on February 21st, and had a strong turnout of parents and mentors. Students performed step, drumming, poetry/spoken word, harmonica and singing as well as showcased their robotics, art and fashion design skills. Three current UF students emceed the event (Taishmara Correa, Jaylen Quinn and Walter McGlone) and kept the show lively and entertaining. Well done all!

February also brought us interesting guest speakers like Koran Bolden from Street Dreamz Artist Development Center, who spoke to students about the music industry, and Judge Vincent, the first African American Circuit Court Judge in St. Louis County. He spoke about being a lawyer, and even had the kids act out a mock trial complete with judge and jury. Truly great learning experiences!

Mr. Zornes and his UF students

Mr. Zornes (referred to as Chef JZ by his students) volunteers his time to teach one of Fanning's favorite classes: cooking. His students never miss a class! Cooking student, Nautica, states "We learn about nutrition and food groups, and how to clean. We cook and have fun and talk about cooking this at home, and how we can become famous cooks." Mr. Zornes' class has become a valuable asset at Fanning, we are so happy to have him. Thank you Chef JZ!
If you would like more information about teaching an enrichment class, contact Jennifer Davies at jennifer@urbanfuturestl.org.

UF students learn the art of mural painting

A flurry of events and programs have kept the students active and engaged! This month, to decorate our office the students began learning the art of mural painting from volunteer James Lochhead, a SLU graduate with a BA in Fine Arts. The mural showcases values such as respect and determination, and will also include the Busch Middle School mascot, the bobcat. We can't wait to see the finished project!
On Friday, February 28th students from both Busch and Fanning Middle Schools had the opportunity to attend a St. Charles Chill hockey game. It was great experience, and former St. Louis Blues and Hall of Famer Brett Hull even made an appearance at the game. UF students had a blast, and loved taking pictures with the mascot. A special thanks to UF supporter Bart Hull for making this event happen.
UrbanFUTURE enjoys a Chill Hockey game
Many exciting guest speakers visited Busch this month to discuss career paths with our students. UF kids enjoyed learning about working for a magazine from STL magazine Editor Christy Marshall
In addition, through the Explore! Careers Classes students have been brushing up on their interviewing skills and learning how to present themselves in a positive light to potential schools and employers.
As always, you can see pictures of Busch Middle School happenings by checking Ms. K's Flickr Feed.
Eleanor and Elnara study together

With Elnara's dreams of working in the medical field, Eleanor is the perfect fit for her as her mentor.  A former nurse, Eleanor has been able to provide Elnara with insight and guidance on the subject. Eleanor is working on strengthening Elnara's self confidence, and even makes weekend trips with her and her family to the local library. What an inspiring connection!

If you would like more information about mentoring or tutoring a student, contact Jennifer Davies at jennifer@urbanfuturestl.org.

Meet Taishmara Correa

Taishmara is a star 8th Grade UrbanFUTURE student at Fanning Middle School. Her favorite subject is Math...she's always up for a challenge! Mara loved when defense lawyer Jason Han presented to her Explore! Careers Class recently because she plans on studying law and becoming a lawyer. She wants to represent people who are overlooked and don't feel they have rights.

Her mentor is Anne Nora, and together with Mara's family has ingrained in her that "it doesn't matter if you are different, you can shine no matter who you are." And shine, she does! Mara teaches a UF Spanish enrichment class, and will be teaching a computer programming class this summer through the Yes! program through the St. Louis Science Center. She is excited to go on the UF DC trip and to celebrate her Grandma's 90th birthday, both coming up this June. Keep up the hard work Mara, we're all so proud of you!
