Barn Update

THIS WEEK'S BARN UPDATE:

The circumference foundation walls are almost finished and the pump house for the sprinkler system has been sited. The pouring for the concrete slab will begin shortly. Footings for the connector between the Tonia Wheeler Children's and Elementary House aka the Main Building and the barn will also be set in the next few weeks.

The water tank and pump house for the sprinkler system will be sited below the Elementary basement door in the hillside.

The final truckloads of the poor soils found under the original barn will be gone by the end of the week. Crushed stone has been brought in by the ton.

The team has been reviewing windows, siding, ventilation, and roofing options for the building.

Soon a new building will begin to emerge!

Birch Room

Our Montessori classrooms are designed in such a way that all "works" lend themselves naturally towards the development of the skills required for oral and written language and reading. Throughout the classroom precise names are used for all of the objects and apparatus.

Nomenclature cards and booklets identify and name the various parts of the object or animal the child is learning about. Each part is isolated in color, which draws your attention to that particular part and not to other details. This reinforces the observation of specific characteristics of things that are in their own environment. Children gain a much clearer and deeper understanding of our world when they have vocabulary to put with images.

  • On Wednesday, October 23, parents are welcome to visit the classroom with their children from 8:30-9:15. This is a good opportunity to see your child in the classroom before parent conferences.
  • If you haven't already, please sign up for conferences on the lobby bulletin board. They will be held on Thursday, October 24, and Friday, October 25.

Willow Room
  • Many thanks to the parents and friends who were able to join us for the Black Mountain Hike: Jen Betit-Engel; Megan Buchanan; Tara Davis; Kathryn Einig; Ciana's grandma, Annie; Rebecca Fontaine and Courtney Fontaine; Jaimie Scanlon and Kevin Warzecha.

Lower Elementary
It was wonderful to have such a large turnout for our first Workshare of the year! If our official Workshare time doesn't work with your schedule, feel free to email us to arrange a time to come in to see your child in action. The next scheduled Workshare is on the morning of Wednesday, October 30th. We look forward to seeing you there. Your children came in this week ready to work, researching planets, invertebrates, practicing math, and learning new grammar.

FIELD TRIP UPDATE:
This Friday's field trip is canceled because we weren't able to find enough transportation (one of the challenges of having a large class!). Instead, we will use the opportunity to take a mini-field trip in the woods around the grounds of the school. Thank you to all who volunteered to drive.

In other field trip news, we are scheduled to visit the Bassett Planetarium in Amherst on Friday, November 22 at 10:00. If you are interested in being a driver, please let us know. It should be an interesting and informative presentation on our solar system.

BOOKS:
If your child borrowed a bag of books last week, please make sure they bring them back on Friday. We will help them find new books to check out and bring home.

SHARING:
Just a reminder that Friday is our class sharing day. Students are invited to share an item (we ask that toys and valuables stay home) that is important to them.

CONFERENCES:
Conferences are next week; please sign up if you haven't already done so.

See you at the carnival!

Upper Elementary

Morningside Shelter is looking for donations, can you help?

Morningside  has a family of 3 moving out of the shelter into an empty apartment November 1st. If you have any of the following to donate, they could really use some help starting out (contact Cindy cwalier@morningsideshelter.org): They need: a couch, a chair, a TV Stand, a Dining Table and Chairs, a twin bed, a queen bed, and 3 dressers. They only accept items in good condition.

Speaking of Morningside Shelter, our Hilltop "flash mob" raised approximately $2000.00 for Morningside Shelter!
