Notes from the Head of School

Dear Parents:

At our faculty/staff meeting on Wednesday we had an extensive and vigorous discussion about emergency procedures. I always come away from these meetings so impressed by how knowledgeable and concerned this group is. Opinions differed, and for a topic as sensitive as this, it could have been difficult to reach a solution that worked for everyone. However, it became obvious that there are different responses for different age groups, for different events, for different locations.

For security reasons we will send home by snail mail the plans that are evolving. They may seem scattered in their approach; please recognize that a procedure for a 3 year old will be different than one for a middle schooler.

These are also the very first steps; the procedures will evolve. We are looking to schedule an outside "expert" to come and assess our ideas. Of course we welcome any input!

As of Monday please take note of the following:

All doors will be locked until 8:15 am at which point the front doors will be open for students and families. Only the front door will remain unlocked. All other access doors will remain locked from the outside.

The front door will be locked at 4:00 pm.

Families using before care should drop off at the outside Birch Room door (by the porch / playground) and those picking up after 4:00 pm should come to the toddler room door at the porch.

On another note, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT FINANCIAL AID FORMS ARE DUE BY JANUARY 15! BE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR 2011 INCOME TAX RETURN. See the link in the sidebar.

Tiny House - Trailer (Still) Needed

This year, as part of the Upper El's practical life work, students will help construct a tiny house. The finished tiny house will be raffled off as a fundraiser for Hilltop and Morningside Shelter. The tiny house movement centers on building beautiful, small spaces that are mobile. Tiny houses are built on a trailer bed for easy transport and locating on a property. The houses feature charming details, energy efficiency, and creative use of space.

Chad Farnum, of Farnum Cellulose (a.k.a. Amelia's husband and Lucy's dad) is helping lead this project. He is donating a huge amount of time and talent. Hilltop will be soliciting donations for materials for this project from a variety of local vendors.

The house raffle will kick off at the big Spring Auction and the final drawing will be at the Strolling of the Heifers Parade.

To get started, we need a trailer to build on. Do you have a 7 x 10 to 8 x 12 trailer that you would like to donate, or know someone who does? Please contact me if you have a trailer that you think might work. This is going to be a terrific project for the students, Hilltop and Morningside Shelter.

Thanks,

Tom Griffith
Upper El teacher

Snack Elves Needed

We need snack helpers for the new school term. It doesn't take much time and is a wonderful contribution to our school. We need someone to pick up food at the Brattleboro Co-op on Tuesday afternoon and we need at least one person to help Mariam prep food for the week on Wednesday mornings. Make a New Year's resolution you can keep! Please email Madeline Fan (madeline@artbarge.org).
