District Committee Training Workshop
The District Committee Training Workshop is designed to provide the basic training needed for all District Committee members. The workshop helps define the four functions of district operations, membership, fund development, program, and unit service. It identifies the major tasks of a specific committee or district assignment so each task can be accomplished. It will explain why a particular assignment is essential to district operation.
Each year the council is tasked to provide this training. This year the training will be on the 7th of June at the LDS Church, 5602 Irongate Road, Madison WI. Registration will start at 8:30 and the training will start at 9AM. We will finish up around 1PM and lunch is provided. There is no cost to this training but you will need to log onto the Scout 24/7 online registration site, located on the council website, and register.

Training Opportunities
The next Glacier's Edge Wood Badge Course will be held in 2014 over two weekends: Sept 12-14 for Session #1, Oct 10-12 for Session #2.
Wood Badge is an advanced adult leadership training program for all leaders in Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing programs. Over six days, Scouters participate in intensive training and use the patrol model. Once this portion is complete, the practical portion begins: completing the Wood Badge ticket. Over a period up to eighteen months, participants complete various projects in service to others, service to the troop, and personal growth. Leaders desiring a deeper dedicated involvement in the Scouting program will find this advanced training highly rewarding.

Show the Colors at Memorial Day Parades
 Memorial Day got started on May 30, 1868, when Union General John A. Logan declared the day an occasion to decorate the graves of Civil War soldiers. Twenty years later, the name was changed to Memorial Day. On May 11, 1950, Congress passed a resolution requesting that the President issue a proclamation calling on Americans to observe each Memorial Day as a day of prayer for permanent peace and designating a period on that day when the people of the United States might unite in prayer. President Richard M. Nixon declared Memorial Day a federal holiday in 1971. Memorial Day is now observed on the last Monday of May. It is an occasion to honor the men and women who died in all wars to secure and protect our freedom. Remembering Those Who Served Here are some great ways you can honor the men and women who serve our country: - Put flags or flowers on the graves of men and women who served in wars. - Fly the U.S. flag at half-staff until noon. - Visit monuments dedicated to soldiers, sailors and marines. - Participate in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. local time. - March in a parade. Whether as an individual, with a friend, or with your Pack or Troop, put on your uniform and join other Scouts to march in a Memorial Day Parade. Philmont High Adventure Council Contingent Crews
June 30 - July 12, 2015
Glacier's Edge Council has secured 5 Philmont Contingent Crew slots for 2015.
Contingent Crews are made up of up to 12 members from different Troops and Venturing Crews. This allows you and a couple of your fellow Scouts to go to Philmont with others from across the Council.
The Philmont experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity for many scouts. If you will be 14 or older by June 30, 2015 you are eligible to go!

Ice Age Trail Award Program
Getting Ready for Philmont? Just looking for new places to take your Troop or Crew hiking? Try the Dane Drifters Program. The Dane County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance has started a new hiking award program to encourage participants to hike all 30+ miles of the Ice Age Trail located in Dane County. The Ice Age Trail can be a great way to help get in shape for a Philmont trek as it offers a nice variety of longer distance trails as well as getting up and down some bigger hills (not Philmont-like, but pretty good for Wisconsin J). Anyone completing all the trail segments in Dane Co receive a patch and certificate of accomplishment.
If your Troop or Crew is interested, check out the Ice Age Trail website's section on Hiking Programs (http://www.iceagetrail.org/hiking-awards-and-programs) or contact Gary Wensing (also of Troop 87) at kensinginn@tds.net. You'll find the registration form on the website - scout groups can register at the $6 Companion rate for each participant.

Boy Scout Troop Unit Self Assessment-Things to Keep in Mind When Visiting a Unit
Quality Criteria
Troop/Team Leadership
A. An active adult committee meets monthly.
B. Assistant adult leaders are involved in the troop/team.
C. Adult leaders are registered and Fast Start and Basic Training are completed.
D. The unit provides a pack with active den chiefs.
E. An adult leader coordinates training for all adults.
F. An adult leader is trained in Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat.
G. An adult leader coordinates Youth Protection training. Everyone is trained.
H. Youth leaders are elected by youth twice per year and are provided training.
Program
A. We develop an annual program calendar and share it with our families.
B. We operate under the annual budget plan.
C. We conduct monthly troop/team youth leader meetings to plan unit meetings and outings.
D. We have adult leaders attend roundtables.
E. We review program routinely with our chartered organization representative.
F.We have a strong outdoor program and go on at least one outdoor trip monthly/regularly.
G. A good percentage of our youth earn advancement/recognition awards regularly.
H.Our troop attends summer camp . . .

I. . . . our team plans a major activity annually.
J.Our unit is 100% Boys' Life with all families.

Baraboo Circus Heritage Days
May 16-18
Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, and Children of All Ages, get ready for the Greatest Show on Earth!
The weekend of May 16, 17 and 18, 2014, is the 28th Baraboo Circus Heritage at the Sauk County Fairgrounds in Baraboo, Wisconsin. There is so much happening at the Heritage! Test your skills on the archery and BB gun ranges, thrill to the Wonder of Physics and BadgerBots robotics. Cheer the lumberjacks as they roll logs and show their skills with axes. Race a Pinewood Derby or Blastcar. Show off your cooking skills in the Dutch Oven Dessert or Iron Chef competitions. New exhibits and activities are added each week - many of your old favorites and some new surprises are in store for you!

STEM & NOVA
Nova Awards and Nova Counselors / SuperNova awards and SuperNova Mentors
Nova awards - Each award covers one component of STEM-science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
- Cub Scout Nova awards: Science Everywhere, Tech Talk, Swing!, and 1-2-3 Go!
- Boy Scout Nova awards: Shoot!, Start Your Engines, Whoosh!, and Designed to Crunch
- Venturing Nova awards: Launch!, Power Up, Hang On!, and Numbers Don't Lie
For Nova awards, Scouts work with a Nova counselor. A Nova counselor can be any registered adult age 21 or older, must complete Youth Protection Training, and must be registered under the Nova counselor position code 58.
SuperNova awards - are much more challenging. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts or Venturers must contact a council-approved SuperNova mentor beforestarting to work on their SuperNova award requirements. Supernova mentors must be 21 or older, be subject matter experts in a STEM field, and be registered under the Supernova Mentor position code 52. In addition to the BSA Adult Registration form, mentors must complete the Supernova Awards Mentor Information application, which will be reviewed and approved by our council STEM committee. They must also complete Youth Protection Training. SuperNova Mentors cannot be the Scout's parent or unit leader (unless the mentor is working with more than one youth at the same time).
