Training Opportunities

The next Glacier's Edge Wood Badge Course will be held in 2014 over two weekends: Sept 12-14 for Session #1, Oct 10-12 for Session #2.
Wood Badge is an advanced adult leadership training program for all leaders in Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing programs. Over six days, Scouters participate in intensive training and use the patrol model. Once this portion is complete, the practical portion begins: completing the Wood Badge ticket. Over a period up to eighteen months, participants complete various projects in service to others, service to the troop, and personal growth. Leaders desiring a deeper dedicated involvement in the Scouting program will find this advanced training highly rewarding.

Ice Age Trail Award Program
Getting Ready for Philmont? Just looking for new places to take your Troop or Crew hiking? Try the Dane Drifters Program. The Dane County Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance has started a new hiking award program to encourage participants to hike all 30+ miles of the Ice Age Trail located in Dane County. The Ice Age Trail can be a great way to help get in shape for a Philmont trek as it offers a nice variety of longer distance trails as well as getting up and down some bigger hills (not Philmont-like, but pretty good for Wisconsin J). Anyone completing all the trail segments in Dane Co receive a patch and certificate of accomplishment.
If your Troop or Crew is interested, check out the Ice Age Trail website's section on Hiking Programs (http://www.iceagetrail.org/hiking-awards-and-programs) or contact Gary Wensing (also of Troop 87) at kensinginn@tds.net. You'll find the registration form on the website - scout groups can register at the $6 Companion rate for each participant.
And if Dane County isn't your area, there are programs for Rock Co, Walworth/Jefferson Co, and Baraboo Hills/Lodi - see the above website for more info and contacts for their award programs.
Happy Hiking!

Commish Corner
Awards and Recognition-NOT JUST FOR SCOUTS
Recognition has been a fundamental concept in Scouting from its beginning. Done right, it's a powerful tool that offers at least four benefits:
1. Celebration of Commitment and Achievement
Probably the first to come to mind, recognition does offer the opportunity to recognize individual achievements. Equally important for commissioners, and beginning with the commission they should receive, it demonstrates the commitment they have made to helping our units serve more kids better.
2. Definition
In Scouting, we know (or can easily find out) what it means to achieve an Arrow of Light, or Eagle Scout Award, or Quartermaster, or Silver Award, or an Award of Excellence in Unit Service. The definition of requirements that Scouting's recognitions provide not only tells us what has been accomplished, but also facilitates personal and team goal-setting.
3. Skill Development
Learning and skill development are important by-products of recognition. Even receiving a commission results from newly appointed commissioners having completed basic training, an orientation to the role they have accepted, and the completion of some of the fundamental tasks that position requires. With more advanced recognition comes increased experience and the development of advanced skills that enable greater effectiveness in supporting units.
4. Inspiration
We're inspired by achievement. Seeing what others have accomplished enables us to see greater potential in ourselves and to strive to fulfill it.
Knots, pins, patches and certificates may not be important to all commissioners, but serving more kids better is. Also, what we say to them in acknowledging their achievement can have powerful impact-on them and on other commissioners present (and we should always strive to recognize achievements publicly).
