Fee Change to take effect in 2014
The National Council of the Boy Scouts of America announced that the Boy Scouts of America is increasing its membership fee from $15 to $24 per year for all registered Scouts and adults effective January 1, 2014. For those who join after the beginning of the year, the fee will be prorated at $2 per month. This does include units with a December 31, 2013, expiration date. As always, our focus is to build the future leaders of this country by combining adventure, educational activities, and lifelong values. The fee increase is a step we must take in order to continue providing the services you and our members expect and need. With your help and that of each of our volunteers and Scouting parents, we will continue accomplishing incredible things for young people and the communities we serve.

Cub Scout Summer Camp
Summer Camp at Camp Indian Trails (CAMP IT!) is just around the corner and the Camp Director, Kyle Kaczmarek, along with the Leadership Team have been busy gathering the best possible staff members to ensure a quality program for the 2014 Summer Camp Season. In preparation for all of the updates and improvements to the program, Kyle or a member of his team will be giving a presentation at your February Roundtable and answering any questions you may have. Please reference the Council Calendar to see when and where your Roundtable is held and plan on having a representative from your unit in attendance (http://www.glaciersedge.org/council-calendar/).
Along with the Roundtable presentations, CAMP IT! will be hosting a pancake breakfast and open house in Allen Hall at Camp Indian Trails on March 30, 2014 and all are invited to attend. The breakfast will consist of all you can eat pancakes and registration forms will be available shortly. Please check out the Camp Indian Trails Facebook Page to ensure that you have the most up to date information regarding CAMP IT! and while you are there, please reply to the Pancake Breakfast/Open House event (https://www.facebook.com/events/644211075636086/) .
The Glacier's Edge Council and Camp Indian Trails are launching a new Council Camping Website which will be ready by the middle of February. The website is intended to focus specifically on Ed Bryant Scout Reservation and Camp Indian Trails and their improved programs. Please feel free to check out the landing page at www.glaciersedgecamps.com and check back regularly for updates.
AMPing up the Cub Scout program at Camp Indian Trails is the ultimate goal but it is up to you, the leader to help us. With your commitment to the Boy Scouts of America and our commitment to providing a quality program, we will be prepared to have a great year at CAMP IT! |
Adult Recognition
District Dinners and the Council Dinner are right around the corner. Time to think of all the great scouters you work with and nominate them for either the District Award of Merit or the Silver Beaver. Also be sure to contact your District Executives about other awards offered through the District.

Training Opportunities

Wood Badge Course C7-620-14 will be held at Camp Indian Trails near Janesville, Wisconsin on the weekends of September 12-14 and October 10-12, 2014. Attendance at both weekends is required for completion of the course. Participants will camp in cabins the first weekend, and camp in their tents the second weekend. A pre-course meeting will be held on August 13 at the Janesville Service Center to answer any last-minute questions.
Wood Badge is the BSA's premier adult leader training course, while teaching principles of leadership and team development that are just as useful for the non-scouting part of our lives(work, church, other volunteer organizations). For more information on the upcoming Woodbadge click HERE

UNIT SERVICE PLAN

The Unit Service Plan is a tool to strengthen a unit and enable it to offer the best possible program to the youth it serves. A collaborative effort between the unit's leaders, its chartered organization, the unit commissioner, and the district operating committee, it establishes a customized annual plan that is periodically reviewed and updated to provide continuing improvement.
In addition, the Unit Service Plan enables commissioners to focus on their four primary responsibilities:
- Supporting unit growth in the Journey to Excellence
- Linking district operating committee resources to the unit
- Visiting units and logging visits in the Commissioner Tools
- Supporting on-time charter renewal
Engagement of the unit Key 3 is essential to the development and execution of an effective Unit Service Plan. The unit Key 3 (unit leader, committee chair, and chartered organization representative) may be a new concept for many units. It was developed as a best practice for new units following the Unit Performance Guide methodology. Its use has shown that all units employing the unit Key 3 concept are stronger and have an easier time making decisions. Examples of a unit leader include a Cubmaster, Scoutmaster, or Crew Advisor. Note that the unit commissioner is not a member of the unit Key 3 but serves as an advisor to the Key 3.
Unit Assessment
A unit assessment can be a first step in supporting unit growth on the Journey to Excellence. The Process Units benefit from assessments at least twice each year at six-month intervals. Around charter renewal is a great option as that often occurs at about the same time units are reviewing JTE achievements for the current year. A third assessment may be valuable when there is a change in unit leadership. It may be helpful for the unit commissioner to coordinate a unit assessment meeting with the unit Key 3 and other unit leaders who can add value to the planning process. Possible agenda items could include: - Review of the unit's JTE performance for the current year
- Review of the unit's most recent Voice of the Scout feedback (if available)
- Completion of a unit assessment
- Identification of key opportunities to strengthen the unit and the program it offers during the coming year
The information developed during the unit assessment meeting is the foundation of the Unit Service Plan, which will be captured in the Commissioner Tools and available for ongoing reference by the unit commissioner.

Plan early to attend the Mohawk Arctic Expedition to Siberia. BB's, Dog Sled Pulls, Reindeer Round Up and more! Things to bring: Winter clothes, Boots, Extra dry socks , Extra dry mittens Back pack or carry bag for extra clothes, Plastic bag for wet clothes, Pack sleds for pulling backpacks on , Water bottles (with water), Can of non-cream soup, Broom for broom hockey (3-4 per pack) labeled, Please label items brought to camp

Mad City Modal Railroad Show
Scouts, Parents, and Leaders!!!
Are you looking for something new and different for an afternoon outing that could also fulfill some advancement requirements?
Check out http://nmra-scwd.org/ to see more information on the "Mad City Model Railroad Show" being held at the Alliant Energy Expo Center on February 15 and 16.
For Cub Scouts - plan a trip, learn how to read a map (vendor and exhibit map inside the building), see model railroads in action, talk to people about model railroading, history of railroads, model building, electricity, and other aspects of the model railroading hobby.
Scouts wearing a Class A uniform will enjoy FREE ADMISSION to the event. Parking is still the standard fee.
Opens at 9:00 am each day and closes at 5:00 pm each day.

Mohawk District Pinewood Derby!
Saturday March 8, 2014
Located at Smart Toyota on Odana Rd. This District event is open to all - No placement in you Pack's Pinewood Derby is required! Early Bird Registration (before Dec. 31) is $8.00. Regular registration is $10.00. After February 14th a late fee of $2 is added. Register early and save! Cub Scouts can register as a Pack or as individuals. Completed registration forms can be sent to the Madison Scout Office.
There will be three Racing Classes: Official -For Registered Cub Scouts and will be divided by Rank; Open - For siblings, parents, Boy Scouts, or anyone else that will abide by official derby rules; and Outlaw Class - No rules on cars. Trophies will be presented for both Open and Outlaw, but they are not eligible to win the Overall awards.

STEM & NOVA

Nova Awards and Nova Counselors / SuperNova awards and SuperNova Mentors
Nova awards - Each award covers one component of STEM-science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
- Cub Scout Nova awards: Science Everywhere, Tech Talk, Swing!, and 1-2-3 Go!
- Boy Scout Nova awards: Shoot!, Start Your Engines, Whoosh!, and Designed to Crunch
- Venturing Nova awards: Launch!, Power Up, Hang On!, and Numbers Don't Lie
For Nova awards, Scouts work with a Nova counselor. A Nova counselor can be any registered adult age 21 or older, must complete Youth Protection Training, and must be registered under the Nova counselor position code 58.
SuperNova awards - are much more challenging. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts or Venturers must contact a council-approved SuperNova mentor beforestarting to work on their SuperNova award requirements. Supernova mentors must be 21 or older, be subject matter experts in a STEM field, and be registered under the Supernova Mentor position code 52. In addition to the BSA Adult Registration form, mentors must complete the Supernova Awards Mentor Information application, which will be reviewed and approved by our council STEM committee. They must also complete Youth Protection Training. SuperNova Mentors cannot be the Scout's parent or unit leader (unless the mentor is working with more than one youth at the same time).
