Commish Corner

BOY SCOUTERS!

I hope everyone had a fun and safe summer, I know that it went by far too quickly for me.   The 2013 National Jamboree at "The Summit"  was the highlight of my scouting summer!  I will have a display at the next couple of roundtables and be ready to answer any questions you may have.  We are starting to look forward to the  2017 Jamboree and the 2019 World Jamboree that will be held at the Bechtel Scouting Reserve.

I would like to open up this years' commissioner's corner by defining what a Unit Commissioner role in the scouting program is:

A Unit Commissioner is a "friend of the Unit" whose mission is to help the unit succeed.  The Commissioner plays many roles including maintaining a close liaison with the chartered organization, ensuring that unit leadership receives adequate training, working to assure effective and active unit committees, facilitating the on-time annual charter renewal process, disseminating information on events, trainings, available resources, etc., and maintaining close contact with unit leaders.  Our focus is helping units bring a solid, quality program to the boys, and to be a resource for the units when needed.  If you have not met your Unit Commissioner, contact your DE or your District Commissioner and they can get you in touch with your commissioner.

As we start to get into our fall recruitment time and we focus on getting new boys involved in Scouting.  This year, we are rolling out a School Night for Scouting program where the focus will be on recruiting cub scouts.  Does that mean that as Boy Scouts we are off the hook?  The answer is a definitive NO! The SNFS is a great opportunity to have a presence in the schools to not only support those packs that we are working closely with, but also to get in front of the parents who could be potential leaders and committee members in the future for  the troop and get some excitement built around becoming a Boy Scout.

Also let's not forget to continue to work at strengthening the connection to the boys that are currently in the program...most notably the Webelos Scouts. Our goal is to have all the boys cross over to a troop.  When we are working with the boys, do not forget to speak with the parents and let them know how the Boy Scout program differs from the Cub Scouts.  This will help with the transition early in the spring when we not only cross over the Webelos, but also the parents of those Scouts.   More times than not, unless they have an older boy in the Scouts, many parents do not have a full grasp how the Boy Scout program works...the more we help them understand the differences, the easier the transition will be.

I have included a list of the things we should focus on each month to aid in the transition to Boy Scouts.  If you have a program that is successful, by all means, keep doing it, this is merely a suggestion.

Goal:  All Webelos Crossover to a Troop.

Scoutmaster -Troop actions:

  • September         Webelos attending Troop meeting(s) as a Webelos visiting Patrol.
  • October               Webelos camping out with a Troop.
  • Nov/Dec              Scoutmaster meeting and applications filled out
  • Jan/Feb 14          Support Crossover.

Cubmaster - Pack actions:

  • September         Contact the Troops in your area and visit them.
  • October               Camp out with a Troop & attend meetings as a Patrol.
  • November          Webelos fill out Troop Applications and meet with Scoutmaster(s).
  • Jan/Feb 14          Pack Conducts Crossover in January or as early as possible.

Idea:  Have the Webelos Bring-A-Buddy with them to check out Boy Scouts.

STEM & NOVA

At summer camps, Scouts dive into science and engineering with enthusiasm. As just one example, for the Whoosh! Nova award Scouts learn about the simple machines and practical applications. In archery, one of the merit badge options, the bow is a lever and the hand is the fulcrum. Crossbows use a pulley. STEM related outdoor activities help scientific principles become real for our Scouts. Thanks to all the volunteers who help make this possible at camp and year-round.

VENTURING
Janesville Explorers Compete-earn Awards
Explorer Post 555 competed June 1, 2013 at the North Shore Explorer Combat Challenge. Organized and hosted by North Shore Fire Department, the competition featured teams from 8 area fire departments (Janesville, Menomenee Falls, Cedarburg, Hales Corners, Milwaukee, North Shore, Oak Creek, Menasha). The Explorers completed five stations of fire-service related tasks for time. They also had the opportunity to run the same course as a 3-5 person relay team.

The Janesville Post 555 team, consisting of Cody K, Brandon H, Ashten W, Brian H, and Isaac G, placed third over-all, beating out some very large and very talented posts. The relay team of Brandon H, Cody K, and Brian H. placed third in the relay division, narrowly missing second place.  Two members also took individual honors: Brandon H. - 1st in the 19 year old age group, Cody K. took 6th over-all. Several other members posted great times, finishing just outside of the top ten over-all, but contributing in a BIG way to the final team standing.

Thanks for taking the time to recognize their most recent success!
