Welcome Our New Scout Executive
The Glaciers Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America has named Alex Tyms to serve as the next Scout Executive / CEO.
Tyms has worked for the Boy Scouts of America for 21 years. He currently serves as the Scout Executive / CEO for the Heart of Ohio Council in Ashland, Ohio. He has also held positions with Councils in Alaska, Louisiana, Florida and Georgia. "I am excited for the opportunity to help lead the Glacier's Edge Council. Scouting has been an integral part of this community for more than 100 years, and I look forward to helping continue the tradition of helping area youth learn the necessary skills to succeed in life," said Tyms.
Tyms was also an active Scout as a youth, earning Scouting's highest award of Eagle Scout. He also served as a Lodge Chief for the Order of the Arrow and as a staff member at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
"We are extremely fortunate to bring on Alex to help lead the thousands of youth and volunteers who make up the Glacier's Edge Council," said Council President Hagen Harker. "Alex has a proven track record of success and the right vision to ensure that we can continue to provide quality programming for the youth in our communities."
Tyms was selected from a pool of seven candidates. He will begin his new role on March 1. The Glacier's Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America covers twelve counties in south-central Wisconsin and north-central Illinois. The Council serves more than 10,000 youth with the help of more than 3,000 volunteers. Annually, Scouts with the Glacier's Edge Council provide nearly 70,000 hours of community service to help local families and organizations. More information on the Glacier's Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America can be found at www.glaciersedge.org. |

Membership Policy
After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the Scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America's National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy.
To that end, the executive board directed its committees to further engage representatives from Scouting's membership and listen to their perspectives and concerns. This will assist the officers & work on a resolution on membership standards. The approximately 1,400 voting members of the national council will take action on the resolution at the national meeting in May 2013.
America needs Scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest of our kids. We believe good people can disagree and still work together to accomplish great things for youth. Going forward, we will work to stay focused on that which unites us. Be a part of this discussion by staying engaged and continuing your role in Scouting. The kids in your community need you.
We recognize during this time there is significant media interest in this issue and it will be important to communicate clearly and accurately. We ask that you please refer any media inquiries to the PR team at pr@scouting.org.
Sincerely,
Matt Thornton
Area Director

CONGRATULATIONS GLACIER'S EDGE COUNCIL FOR BEING A SILVER COUNCIL IN 2012 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE
Spring is a great time to focus on our Outdoor Programs. Kids join scouting for Camping and the promise of outdoor adventure. As adult leaders, we need to make sure that we deliver on this promise.
Cub Scout Leaders - Spring is a great time to go camping. Our Cub Scouts look forward to any opportunity to stay in a tent and cook outside. If your unit is new to camping, Baraboo Circus Heritage is a great opportunity to go camping, with a minimal amount of planning required on your part. This event is full of program activities such as the Dutch Oven Cooking, Bounce Rooms, Pinewood Derby, BB guns, Archery, the Circus Museum, the Circus show, and a Wagon Decorating Contest, and many more. Contact your Unit Commissioner, District Executive, or the Scout Service Center if you need more information.
If your unit is ready to get into the woods, Glaciers Edge Council has great camping facilities at Camp Indian Trails, Ed Bryant Scout Reservation, and the Woodman Center. In addition, we have many State, County, and local parks that are very Scout friendly and provide great outdoor experiences for your scouts.
For Webelos leaders, Webelos Expedition is coming up quickly. This is a great opportunity to have your scouts spend a weekend in the woods experiencing a great outdoor program.
Boy Scout Leaders - I know that you are very busy planning and running fantastic outdoor programs for your units. I would ask one favor from you. Take a couple of minutes and reach out to the Cub Scout Units in your area to see if they need any help in planning their outdoor programs. A few minutes of your time and experience can greatly enhance the success of our Cub Scout Outdoor programs.
During the summer months, there are a large number of Day Camps and Resident Camps available. These camps provide tremendous outdoor programs. All of our camps still have space available for your scouts. If you need more information, check out the Council Website, or call the Council Service Center. We need to take advantage of these opportunities to ensure that every scout is provided a great outdoor program and gets to experience the adventure of camping.
Winter was long this year. Spring is here. Let's take advantage of the great weather and deliver on the promise of scouting.
Thank you for all that you do for Scouting.
John Huttenhoff
