Welcome Our New Scout Executive
The Glaciers Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America has named Alex Tyms to serve as the next Scout Executive / CEO.
Tyms has worked for the Boy Scouts of America for 21 years. He currently serves as the Scout Executive / CEO for the Heart of Ohio Council in Ashland, Ohio. He has also held positions with Councils in Alaska, Louisiana, Florida and Georgia. "I am excited for the opportunity to help lead the Glacier's Edge Council. Scouting has been an integral part of this community for more than 100 years, and I look forward to helping continue the tradition of helping area youth learn the necessary skills to succeed in life," said Tyms.
Tyms was also an active Scout as a youth, earning Scouting's highest award of Eagle Scout. He also served as a Lodge Chief for the Order of the Arrow and as a staff member at Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, New Mexico.
"We are extremely fortunate to bring on Alex to help lead the thousands of youth and volunteers who make up the Glacier's Edge Council," said Council President Hagen Harker. "Alex has a proven track record of success and the right vision to ensure that we can continue to provide quality programming for the youth in our communities."
Tyms was selected from a pool of seven candidates. He will begin his new role on March 1. The Glacier's Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America covers twelve counties in south-central Wisconsin and north-central Illinois. The Council serves more than 10,000 youth with the help of more than 3,000 volunteers. Annually, Scouts with the Glacier's Edge Council provide nearly 70,000 hours of community service to help local families and organizations. More information on the Glacier's Edge Council of the Boy Scouts of America can be found at www.glaciersedge.org. |

Membership Policy
After careful consideration and extensive dialogue within the Scouting family, along with comments from those outside the organization, the volunteer officers of the Boy Scouts of America's National Executive Board concluded that due to the complexity of this issue, the organization needs time for a more deliberate review of its membership policy.
To that end, the executive board directed its committees to further engage representatives from Scouting's membership and listen to their perspectives and concerns. This will assist the officers & work on a resolution on membership standards. The approximately 1,400 voting members of the national council will take action on the resolution at the national meeting in May 2013.
America needs Scouting, and our policies must be based on what is in the best interest of our kids. We believe good people can disagree and still work together to accomplish great things for youth. Going forward, we will work to stay focused on that which unites us. Be a part of this discussion by staying engaged and continuing your role in Scouting. The kids in your community need you.
We recognize during this time there is significant media interest in this issue and it will be important to communicate clearly and accurately. We ask that you please refer any media inquiries to the PR team at pr@scouting.org.
Sincerely,
Matt Thornton
Area Director

Scouting For Food
April 6th and April 13th
Scouting for Food is a council-wide food drive intended to assist loca l food pantries stock their inventories for the coming summer months. Traditionally, scout units sign up to participate in the drive by giving the council a unit commitment form that names a unit coordinator and requests a number of fliers to give to homeowners in a particular area that they have volunteered to cover. They then distribute the fliers to residential homes on a particular Saturday and come back a week later to pickup food. The 2013 Scouting for Food flier drop-off date in the Mohawk, Wisconsin River, and Yahara districts is April 6th. Food pickup in those districts is scheduled for April 13th. Scouting for Food in the Indian Trails and Southern Lakes districts if scheduled for November. Units who wish to conduct Scouting for Food on different dates will be supported by the council as much as possible. Contact your District Executive to request fliers.

STEM & NOVA
BSA's new STEM program encourages Scouts to experience science, technology, engineering and math in fun and interesting ways. There are two awards levels: The Nova awards program helps Scouts discover how exciting STEM can be; the Supernova awards program is even more challenging and encourages scientific discovery. Requirements build on existing advancement programs for Cub Scouts, Webelos, Boy Scouts and Venturers.

Sound cool? To support our Scouting units with this initiative, we need adults with a background in STEM to help on our new council STEM committee and to help Scouts as mentors. Commish Corner
CONGRATULATIONS GLACIER'S EDGE COUNCIL FOR BEING A SILVER COUNCIL IN 2012 JOURNEY TO EXCELLENCE
Getting value out of JTE
It's that time of year again. Your Unit Commissioner or DE is nagging you to fill out that JTE form again. As Commissioners, we frequently hear many of the following questions about the JTE program.
Why do we need to do this every year?
How is it going to help my unit?
Why does this have to be so complicated?
The JTE program is a tool to help you to improve the quality of the program in your unit.
In many ways, the JTE process is very similar to the process we teach our youth in using a map and compass to find their way.
The first step is to figure out where you are at.
The next step is to figure out where you are going.
Finally, we use the map and compass to plot a course or plan to get us to our destination. Periodically along the way we look for landmarks to measure our progress against our plan.
The process for JTE does the same things.
Use your 2012 numbers to determine where you are at. Pick 2-3 areas for improvement. (Where the unit wants to go) Set a goal in those areas for where the unit wants to be by the end of 2013. Put together an Action Plan - Who, What, Where, When to get you there. At each committee meeting review progress on Action Plan.
The Scouts that we serve deserve the best program that we can provide to them. When we embrace JTE, it becomes a tool to help guide us on our Journey.
Thanks for all you do for our Scouts!
John Huttenhoff

Cub Scout Camps 2013!
Howdy partner! The Glacier's Edge Council Sheriff has put out the wanted posters for those Glacier's Edge Cub Scout Packs that are going to be attending one of his camps this summer. The Sheriff needs to know your plans so he can take you of his wanted list. Help us plan for the Summer 2013 Cub Scout Camps by telling us which camp(s) your Pack is planning to attend. Please complete the Cub Camp Interest Form at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2013CubCampPlan. By completing the form your Pack will be on the list for the camp. To lock in your spot at a given camp you must submit a youth roster and payment.
