The Passion of Old Age:
The passion of Jesus Christ refers to the final days in the life of Jesus, from his entrance into Jerusalem through the events of Holy Week to humiliation and torture and death on the cross. It is this redemptive participation by Jesus in our human sin and death which gives us the hope of participation in his eternal life. Further, in the obedience of Jesus within the brief trajectory of his life, we are given a model of obedience for our lives as Christians. As disciples, we have been called to take up our cross and follow him. For those who are given the opportunity to live long years into old age, this call is particularly challenging. The passion of Jesus unfolded over a weekend; the passion of old age can stretch into decades. How do the events of Holy Week illumine and give meaning to our own experiences of suffering?   How can those who are old (and those not so old) who are in their final days come to an identification with Jesus as they approach the end of life? Can the church recover an understanding of passion and martyrdom as the crown of ordinary Christian life? How can the mysterious and hidden witness of the very old be brought forth from the shadows of nursing homes and dementia units to inspire the wider church?   This program will give us an opportunity to enter into the sacred events of Holy Week with some new insights and with some new companions.
