Anam Cara

Anam Cara is Gallic for "Soul Friend." It comes out of the Celtic tradition of encouraging us to find a spiritual companion who journeys with us on our path of life.

Along the way, Mother Julia will support you in your own discernment of the presence and invitations of the Spirit towards healing, towards transformation, towards freedom, towards authenticity and towards service in the goodness and love of God - all grounded in the nurturing of a growing intimacy between you and God.

To get more information, email The Rev. Julia Rusling, Director of the Anam Cara program, or call her at 770-455-6523.  Click here to read the brochure.

Christmas in July - July 19:

Did you know that there are only 4 more shopping days until Christmas... in July?Come this Sunday when we will celebrate the birth of Jesus at the 8 and 10:30 services, with Christmas carols and, I hear, a visit from St. Nicholas!Following the10:30 service there will be a special Hospitality House in the Parish Hall celebrating both the season and our own Brother Kenneth Hosley, recent graduate from The Candler School of Theology at Emory University. We are honored that Brother Kenneth will be the preacher at both services.

How can you prepare? Imagine that you are in Sydney, Australia, where Christmas falls in their summer!  Find your flip flops, don your summer togs and join us this happy morning for nativity rejoicing and Christmas cheer at Hospitality House. Ponder again the birth of this baby born to bring peace into the hearts of all.

In thanksgiving for St. Patrick's

1              Tucked away in a corner of the Kingdom

Missing each dear face I dearly own,

With food, visit, cards, calls and prayers

I'm joined with you in love's sweet tone

2              Each Sunday one will visit

                With grace a Spirit warm

And fill the gap of emptiness

A hand, His hand within the storm

3              His blood, His body, His Kingdom

                Now being rightly one

For each, my dears, you truly are

                The presence of His Son.

In thanksgiving, blessing and blessed

Marigold Watson

Preaching July 19 - Brother Kenneth Hosley: Br. Kenneth has been hard at work these past three years at Candler School of Theology and working as resident seminarian at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit in Cumming, GA. This past May, he graduated with a GPA of 3.98 and certificates in Anglican Studies and Religious Education in the Academy. Following Bishop Wright's decision last year to remove him from the ordination process, Br. Kenneth has turned his attention and gifts to teaching. This past January he was accepted into the 2015 Teach for America Corps and will be teaching high school English Language Arts in the Metro Atlanta area starting next month. In the meantime, Br. Kenneth has continued his work as abbot of the Order of St. Anthony which now has chapters in Atlanta and Cumming, GA, as well as Houston, TX. His work as a calligrapher and iconographer continue to occupy the rest of his time, with his most recent commission for Holy Spirit in Cumming nearing completion.

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

  • Nursery (newborn - 4 years old) - 9:00 a.m.
  • Adult Christian Formation

Join us for any of these classes:

VISION STEWARDSHIP

Room 1, led by Keith Harper -

July 12,19, August 2, 9, 16 and 30.
Note: the class August 30 will be presented at the parish retreat.
These sessions will focus on a theology of abundance and gratitude rather than on a theology of scarcity.  Biblical understandings of, Episcopal teaching about, and new perspectives of stewardship will be explored in order to address this question:  What does a parish that seeks to thrive need to do?

PAINTING LOOKING UP

Art Lab, led by Nancy Dusenberry and Diane Rankin

Do you have fantastic dreams that you'd like to keep as teachers? Memories that you'd like to freeze in time and revisit? We begin with a meditation time to "call up" and focus our chosen images, talk a bit, and sketch. Subsequent weeks are spent producing and resolving. No prior experience needed.

DREAMS: LISTENING TO GOD

Library, led by Brenda Marquis and Kendra Yates

The Dream Group provides a safe and sacred space to share dreams and help participants find spiritual fulfillment in them. Participants are also helped to discern what God might be telling them in "God's forgotten language." Every week varies according to who attends and the dream selected for discussion.

It's Backpack Time!: Getting ready to go back to school is exciting for most kids, especially when all their supplies are purchased, labeled and organized, and tucked into a brand new backpack. Anxiety happens when children don't feel prepared to go back to school like their friends.

At Malachi's, we want all of our client's school aged children to feel prepared with school supplies to give them the confidence they need to start the school year off well. And you can help us do this, once again with BACKPACKS!

We will begin distributing filled backpacks on Wednesday, July 29 and again on Wednesday, August 5. Most schools start on Monday, August 10.

There are several ways you can help us reach the goal of getting a filled backpack to all of our Malachi's children:

  1. Purchase the supplies and backpack yourself from the attached list. Bring the backpack to church anytime between Thursday, July 22 to Sunday, July 26th. Look for the backpack bin in the Narthex. Items needed:

    1 Backpack

    6 Folders

    1 Ruler

    3 Pink erasers

    1 Pack of #2 Pencils

    1 Glue stick

    2 Spiral notebooks

1 24 count box of crayons

    1 12-pack colored pencils

1 pack of 3"x5" index cards

1 pack of filler paper (150 sheets) (You can print the supply list here.)

  2. Go to the St. Patrick's website on-line giving link here. and procede to the section of options for giving. Choose 'Malachi's Backpacks'. Please give whatever you are comfortable with. $30 buys a well stocked, sturdy backpack.

Thank you so much for your generosity with getting these children ready to go back to school!

Shine a Light Lunch Bags: The Brotherhood of St. Andrew is proud to sponsor Shine A Light and Action Ministries in making and delivering 200 lunches to kids at risk. This makes a total of 400 for St. Patrick's this summer! The children are identified as those who are on school lunch programs during the winter but have nothing during the summer. When kids are hungry, they are open to having lunch with the wrong person who may lure them into a hideous and broken life.

Come on Thursday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. and help fill those bags with a healthy lunch. Friday morning the SAL team will deliver the lunches to Action Ministries for distribution. Thousands of lunches every day are coming in from churches and non-profits from all over Atlanta for Action Ministries' lunch distribution program.

One step at a time to PREVENT child slavery!

Stephen Ministry: If you are feeling troubled about a problStephen Ministriesem in your life, please know that Stephen Ministers are always available. They will be there to listen and to walk with you during the times when you most need them. God wants you to be at peace, and the Stephen Ministers are trained to help you find that peace. Call Fr. Dick at 770-455-6523 or Anne Duncan at 770-454-9053 to be put in touch with a Stephen Minister. Your request and conversations will be kept totally confidential.
