Dear friends,

Some of us want to say, "It is over, let's move on." Others of us are personally aware of the present reality of racism. If nothing else, our geography - the home town of MLK and the birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement in the South--places us in the middle of a national conversation. Many of us have stories to share. All of us are called to listen.

As we approach the national holiday honoring MLK, and particularly in light of the incidents in Ferguson and New York City, I invite us all to join in the conversation and consider how we might take our share in dismantling racism wherever it appears.

On this score, Jon Richardson is facilitating a class on Sundays, guided by the book, Outside Agitator: Jon Daniels and the Alabama Civil Rights Movement. You may know that Jon Daniels is a 20th century Anglican saint remembered as a Seminarian (Episcopal) and witness for Civil Rights. He died in Hayneville, Alabama on August 20, 1965 shielding a young woman from racist gunfire. The Diocesan Commission for Dismantling Racism has suggested that we all read the book in preparation for the diocesan pilgrimage to Hayneville this summer, honoring the 50th Anniversary of Daniels' death. If you are not already participating in a class, let me suggest that you come to Jon's on Sundays through February 8.

Epiphany Blessings!

 Epiphany Fire 2013

Epiphany Celebration: Please join us Jan. 11 for a Celebration style Epiphany service at 5:00 p.m. This special service will begin in the Nave and continue outside with the burning of the greens (please cut a branch from your tree and bring it to add to the fire) which creates an amazing bonfire. After the service we will gather in the Parish hall for a chili supper. Come Celebrate with your St. Patrick's family!

 From the Rev. Julia Rusling

Last Sunday during the sermon we spoke of how Joseph's presence to Mary and to Jesus is an integral piece both of the Christmas/Epiphany story, as well as an invitation to each of us to live a life of intentional presence to one another. A number of folks have asked for a reminder of the six phrases I shared as a means of practicing and growing into this presence. I garnered the six phrases from a book, No Mud, No Lotus: The Art of Transforming Suffering, by Thich Nhat Hanh. They are:

  • I am here for you.
  • I know you are there, and it makes me very happy.
  • I know you suffer, and that is why I am here for you.
  • I suffer, please help.
  • This is a happy moment.
  • You are partly right.

It is helpful to start with ourselves, then move on to another person, a friend, a beloved. By practicing these phrases, they become an inherent part of how we live our lives, and begin to flow naturally from us in those moments of grace filled presence we seek to offer to one another.

Your mindful presence is a tremendous gift of love.

I see the light of Christ in you!

Love and Blessings,

Julia

PARISH HAPPENINGS

Being Mary and Martha: The next meeting is Tuesday, Jan. 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Parlor

Youth News!
  • Second: The Mission Trip: Our final numbers are due soon, and once those are in, we won't be able to add folks in. Right now we have several spaces still open. In addition, we still need chaperones. St. Columba's has mostly male chaperones, so we could use female chaperones, although we need at least one male to go with us.
    • About the trip: We will be going to Harrisburg PA from June 14-19, Sunday-Friday. We'll be joining with several other Episcopal Churches from the Diocese of Atlanta. It should be a wonderful experience with a combination of service work, relationship building and worship (Episcopal tradition). For youth, we request a $100 deposit to secure your spot. The deposit should be paid by the end of this month or the beginning of February at the latest. RSVP or questions to Mother Sarah.

Annual Meeting and Call for Vestry Nominations: Vestry Elections are coming up on Sunday, Feb. 1 as part of our Annual Meeting. We will be electing four new vestry members for the 2015-2018 term, as well as a youth vestry member for a one year term.

Nomination forms and qualification details are available at the volunteer desk in the church office or in PDF form here .

The deadline to submit a nomination form is Wednesday, Jan. 8 at noon. Nomination forms must be accompanied by a photo of the nominee. Please email the photo and completed form to Amanda Vaughn by Wednesday, Jan. 21.

Eligibility for the office of vestry member is determined by: Constitution and Canons of the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Atlanta, Canon 31, Section 6.(d).(1).

"Those qualified for election to the office of Vestry Member shall be as follows: Any confirmed communicant in good standing of the Parish who is not less than eighteen years of age, a regular attendant at the services of the Church in the year preceding election, and known by the Treasurer to have made and fulfilled a stated financial commitment for church support in the year preceding election."

To nominate someone for the office of vestry member, as well as to be eligible to vote in the election, you must be: "confirmed communicant(s) (sic) in good standing not less than sixteen years of age as certified by the Rector or Vicar or the Vestry. Those voters so qualified and being present at the meeting shall constitute a quorum." Canon 31, Section 4.

Foyers Groups:
Want to get in on the fun? New Foyers dinner party groups will be forming in January. Reserve your spot with Bill and Diane Rankin. One St. Patrick's foyers group finished in style Friday night while attending Emory University Concert Choir's Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols. 14 parishioners and their guests attended and were entertained after the concert with scrumptious desserts at the home of Mike & JoAnne Cropper.

Pledge Cards Available Online:If you didn't pick up your 2015 pledge card at St. Patrick's, you can find one on our website. Click here to get to it, then print, fill out, and return to the church office.

Name tags: Remember, wear your name tag when you come to St. nametag Patrick's! They're hanging alphabetically on the name tag board. Each Sunday the board can be found in the narthex. Otherwise it lives in the back hallway. If you need a nametag, please email Amanda Vaughn or fill out the form that can be found Sunday mornings in the narthex on the stand next to the visitor's book.

Carl McColman 2

Here in the 21st century, some of our leading Christian thinkers - people like Phyllis Tickle, Brian McLaren, Richard Rohr, and Diana Butler Bass - contend that we are on the verge of another reformation that may prove to be as world-transforming as the one 500 years ago. What does this mean for ordinary Christians? How can we be faithful to Christ and His Gospel in a world where change - both inside and outside the Church - is so radical, so non-stop, so all-pervasive? This series hopes to explore these questions by prayerfully reflecting on "The Once and Future Christian."

Session I: The Future is Now: Exploring the Emergence Theology of Phyllis Tickle, Richard Rohr, Brian McLaren, and Diana Butler Bass
Session II: "The Christian of The Future" - contemplation, charism, and prayerfully riding the wave
Session III: Thomas Merton and the Dalai Lama: Christianity in dialogue with other faiths (being true to our faith without being a fundamentalist)
Session IV: Waiting for a New Saint Benedict: How the Wisdom of the Past can illuminate our path into the future.
