Malachi's Storehouse Mobile Food Pantry

The Mobile Food Pantry started like many other things that happen at Malachi's Storehouse. A contact from the Atlanta Community Food Bank called and said that the ACFB was beginning a pilot program and that MSH had been selected to participate in the pilot. The Mobile Food Pantry project was designed by the ACFB to help them meet their goal of distributing more food to food deserts. Some of us may be surprised to know that Dunwoody is considered to be a food desert in regards to fresh food for those in need; but it's true. We were pleased to be chosen as a pilot site; and said "yes" albeit with a bit of a lump in our throats. We really did not know how we were going to get the volunteers to cover yet another day of serving; but we know that we are called to follow Jesus into the desert...especially the food desert. Did you know there are 300 references to the poor and needy in our Holy Scriptures? The hungry and needy are on God's mind and heart.

Our usual practice at Malachi's is to, if at all possible, say "yes" to calls that come about free food, clothing, diapers, household items etc. and then put our foot on the path of resourcing the details. We handled this call with just that practice. That is, we said "yes" to what was given and then worried, watched, and prayed as God worked out the details. At Malachi's, we often experience God as a really tenacious and busy "stage Mom", feverishly backstage working out the details and always going before us preparing the way.

The previous Mobile Food pantry we fed 200 families. We are currently open one (occasionally two) Saturday mornings a month. Bill Bowling and the folks at ACFB believe that ending food scarcity in Georgia is within our reach. We think Jesus would be really happy about that goal. We know that we are. When we were walking in the last Hunger Walk, joining 15,000 people who walked in solidarity to affirm that goal, Malachi's Storehouse volunteers heard the call and continue to do their part to realize that dream. We know that it is do-able. We say "yes" every Wednesday and worry, watch, and pray as God works out the details.

One of the really fun things about the Mobile Food Pantries are that we get to host different groups of folks who want to volunteer. Georgia Power, Chase Bank, and Dad's Bucket List are among the volunteer groups from Dunwoody that have helped pass out free food on Saturdays. In October, Chamblee High School Honor Society is assisting with the serving. We welcome you to join in. We can always use volunteers to host -our families, move food, or break down cardboard.

All of you give to Malachi's Storehouse in some way- your dollars, your prayers, your ugly mugs, your long-sufferingness about how hard we are on the building, your understanding, your worry, your frequent applause at how hard we work are all felt ways that you offer support. We would love for you to share in the joy of Malachi's as well. Come anytime. We welcome you on Saturdays and on Wednesdays to the joy of serving with your whole heart. Let God be your backstage Momma readying

the details for your social justice debut OR comeback. Say "yes" and watch God show up and work out the details. Maybe you'll get the starring role.

The next Mobile Food Pantry at St. Patrick's will be this Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9:00 a.m.
