:October 9-11 at Sewanee with Tilden Edwards. A retreat, "Practicing Mind-in-Heart Spiritual Leadership", will explore the dimensions of a contemplative leadership model within various ministry contexts...both lay and ordained. Photo of Dr. Frank Richards next to a dosing pole. People to be treated stand next to the pole for community volunteer distributors to determine the Mectizan (ivermectin) tablet dose: 1, 2, 3, or 4 (round) tablets shown on the pole schematically. Scales don't hold up for long under these conditions, but poles can actually be constructed locally.
Dr. Frank Richards' Trip to Uganda:
Frank recently went to Uganda with the Carter Center where he leads the Carter Center's efforts to eliminate river blindness (also known as onchocerciasis), a parasitic disease transmitted by the bites of infected black flies. On Aug. 12, 2014, The Carter Center held a special ceremony in northern Uganda to celebrate the distribution of the 200 millionth Mectizan® drug treatment, used to eliminate river blindness, supported by The Carter Center worldwide.
Read his speech and more information about this mission here.

MINISTRY NEWS

  Stephen Ministries

Stephen Ministry: Just call Stephen Ministers the "after" people. After you find the pink slip in what's now your final paycheck, after the doctors have said there's nothing more they can do, after the relationship ends but the wounds are still bleeding, after family and friends have heard your story one too many times but you still need to talk it out--that's when the Stephen Ministers step in.

A free and confidential service, Stephen Ministry takes folks who are struggling with a special need and pairs them with lay persons who have been trained as Stephen Ministers to offer them not advice or counsel, but Christian support and care.

As you consider your spiritual gifts and how to use them, you may find that the Holy Spirit is calling you to be present to those in our community who need companionship and a caring, Christian listener who will understand and be supportive during a difficult time. If you would like to learn more about this important ministry and how you might help, please call Anne Duncan 770-454-9053. The next training class for new Stephen Ministers will begin in September, 2014.
