St. Patrick's Library

Here is your personal invitation to become acquainted with our church library. It's such a wonderful space with well stocked shelves and just waiting for YOU to visit. You can take a book to read at home or sit and enjoy it in one of the comfortable chairs.

There are two ways to check out the books. If you have a library card, you can use the computer for check out. There are "how to" instructions on the top of the cabinet to the right of the computer. If you don't have a card and would like to get one, fill out one of the forms - also on the cabinet top - to request one.

Another way to check out is the old fashioned way - sign the card in the back of the book and leave it in the box on the cabinet.

If you have any suggestions for the library or books that you would like to have purchased, please talk to Elaine Perkins or Brenda Marquis.

PARISH HAPPENINGS

Line Dancing: Aug. 14 at 7:00 p.m.

Join the Being Mary and Martha group and "get down"  for Line Dancing in the Parish Hall. This has been a favorite event in years past. Two of Joan Reddicks' friends who teach line dancing will be leading us. A variety of music and styles (disco, country, and more) will be used. You don't have to be very coordinated or athletic to join us and have fun! Participate fully, intermittently, or just sit and watch (and laugh). So we can pay for the teachers' time, we'll collect $3 at the door.  Please bring a snack to share if you are able. All are welcome.

Shine a Light Presentation: Aug. 17 - between the services:

Most of us have heard about the child sex trafficking epidemic in Atlanta. Join us on Sunday August 17 at 9:15 a.m. for a presentation by Stuart Griffin, COO, Street Grace and learn the facts. Our Shine A Light ministry is off to a good start and Street Grace is St Patrick's partner in this fight to decrease the demand and increase awareness. Stuart will introduce a fall initiative, FACE (father's against child exploitation) with more education to come. At the same time, we will introduce a couple of other initiatives planned for fall at St Patrick's.

Aug. 24 Hospitality House Help Needed: During Hospitality House on Aug. 24 we are going to celebrate Bishop Wimberly's visit; our reaffirmations, receptions, confirmations, and baptisms; and our kids going back to school. We need all who are able to share in the celebration by preparing salads, casseroles and desserts. It's been a while since we all have gotten together and shared a meal. With all the great cooks out there and everyone's willingness to pitch in, we can celebrate all the good things going on in our lives together as a church family. More info to come.

Name tags: Remember, wear your name tags when you come to nametag St. Patrick's! They're hanging alphabetically on the name tag board. Each Sunday the board can be found in the narthex. Otherwise it lives in the back hallway. If you need a nametag, please email Amanda Vaughn or fill out the form that can be found Sunday mornings in the narthex on the stand next to the visitor's book.

Vestry Meetings: These meetings are open to all. The next Vestry Meeting is Sunday, Aug. 17 at 12:30 p.m. in Room 8.

WORSHIP

Celebration Contemporary Style Worship Service:

5:00 p.m. on Sunday August 17, in the Parish Hall

Mark your calendars for a wonderful evening of praise, celebration and good food. It will include a homily and communion, too. Stay after and enjoy a simple meal together. No reservations needed. Help us spread the word by inviting friends, old and new, to worship with us in this casual and open-hearted way.

Bishop Visitation: The Right Rev. Don A. Wimberly will join us on Aug. 24. Bishop Wimberly is retired from full-time ministry and lives in Roswell, Ga., with his wife, Wendy. The Wimberlys have two adult children who live in the Atlanta area and two grandchildren. He is the former diocesan bishop of two Episcopal dioceses: Texas and Lexington, Ky, and also has and served parishes in New York, Louisiana, Kansas and Florida. He recently was invited by Bishop Rob Wright to join the bishop visitation schedule for congregations in the Diocese of Atlanta. Wimberly was ordained to the priesthood in 1971. Born in Baton Rouge, La., in 1937, he attended Louisiana State University and later earned a master of divinity from Virginia Theological Seminary. He holds doctor of divinity degrees from VTS and the University of the South, Sewanee, where he served as chancellor from 1997 to 2003.

MINISTRY NEWS

Stephen Ministry: Just call Stephen Ministers the "after" people. After you find the pink slip in what's now your final paycheck, after the doctors have said there's nothing more they can do, after the relationship ends but the wounds are still bleeding, after family and friends have heard your story one too many times but you still need to talk it out--tStephen Ministrieshat's when the Stephen Ministers step in.

A free and confidential service, Stephen Ministry takes folks who are struggling with a special need and pairs them with lay persons who have been trained as Stephen Ministers to offer them not advice or counsel, but Christian support and care.

As you consider your spiritual gifts and how to use them, you may find that the Holy Spirit is calling you to be present to those in our community who need companionship and a caring, Christian listener who will understand and be supportive during a difficult time. If you would like to learn more about this important ministry and how you might help, please call Anne Duncan 770-454-9053. The next training class for new Stephen Ministers will begin in September, 2014.

Backpacks: Kingswood United Methodist wants to partner with us for backpacks for Malachi's kids! They graciously provided us with 50 backpacks! We want to fill those backpacks with the necessary stuff kids need in order to be prepared. If you'd like to make a donation to fill a backpack simply go to www.e-giving.org and donate any amount. $25 will fill one backpack! Thank you so much for your continued generosity toward our Malachi's Storehouse kids. God bless you, Kathy

We are also collecting backpacks as the school year starts up again. If you'd like to provide a backpack with some supplies, please drop them off by the Malachi's Storehouse room in the back hall. We will be glad to find deserving children in need of them.

Malachi's Storehouse Needs:

  • Website - Do you know WordPress? We are needing a guru to help us with the MSH website.
  • Mugs
    -  We need more of your "ugly mugs". Drop off a bag/box of your ugly mugs in the box outside the Malachi's Storehouse door across from the kitchen.  Thanks and love,  Kathy   (contact Kathy via email here)
