Explorer's Camp a Huge Success

It takes a village to raise a child, much less thirty some. And St. Patrick's village really got on board with this year's camp. Meal providers, planners, preparers, servers, cleaner uppers, youth volunteers, adult helpers, teachers, leaders, financial donors, musicians, clergy, church staff, furniture movers, facilitators, a safety expert, security conscious rovers all worked to accomplish the fourth Explorer's camp. Don't forget the parents and others who got the children to the church and picked them up not, without some challenges. Of nearly fifty children who registered the average attendance was 34. Fantastic!!! Thank you to each and every one who contributed to this wonderful experience for these fabulous children.

The theme this year was "The Light of the World". Scripture verses were used each day to focus on light. In reading children read about light, darkness, sources of light, and reflected light. Each child in reading was given a book about light to take home. In art, children made straw crowns, a cardboard cityscape with lights, and twinkle lanterns. Young scientists learned to observe, question, see light go through prisms to make rainbows, and mix colors (the same ones in the rainbows) to make black! They also looked through different lenses to see how light behaves differently with different lenses.

The group met last night to learn more about the issue of child sex trafficking in Georgia. Greg Chevalier gave short presentation about Street Grace (above). Street Grace is an umbrella for churches, schools and non-profits who all have a goal of ending the child sex trafficking epidemic in Georgia. The group packed healthy lunches  (below) after Mr. Chevalier's presentation, which were distributed to children today.

Stephen Ministry:
We can all make St Patrick's a more caring place with a bright smile, a sincere greeting, a warm hug, and a word of encouragement. As you greet people this morning, let them know how much you care. And remember, when you meet someone with extra needs, remind them that our Stephen Ministers are specially trained to be there for them during life's crises and challenges. Call Fr Dick at (770) 455-6523 for a referral to a Stephen Minister.

July 13 Movie - The Green Mile hosted by Fr Dick:

Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks) is in charge of death row in a 1935 Louisiana penitentiary. The cell block is called "The Green Mile" due to its green linoleum floor - the path an inmate walks from his cell to the room with the electric chair. Edgecombe's life changes with the admission of John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan), who was convicted of the rape and murder of two young sisters. Coffey possesses a miraculous, mysterious power to heal, and Edgecombe realizes he is innocent of the crime. While Coffey awaits execution on death row, he infects others with life. (1999)

Simple Presence, Common Ground: This class will resume July 13 and run through August 3, is Simple Presence, Common Ground. This class will meet in the quiet room off the Narthex. Guided by Tilden Edwards' Living Simply Through the Day, each class will begin with an introduction of a contemplative prayer practice, followed by actual practice time and ending with sharing. This class is for anyone interested in contemplative prayer and practices, and is a safe place for the curious, the beginner and those who already have an established prayer practice. Think of this class as a time for quiet prayer before the service.

The Dream Group will continue to meet on second Sundays during the summer.
