The Shamrock - May 14, 2014

The "Being Mary and Martha" Group

by Leslie Bishop

After prayerful discussion and reflection, the Professional Women's Group voted to change our name to "Being Mary and Martha." Most of the group members either are currently working or have worked in the past, but our focus is really on the challenges we face in everyday life, being a Christian woman in the workplace, in families, with friends, in the church, and in the world. Mary and Martha are perfect examples of the tension we encounter every day.

For those of you who haven't joined us before and wonder what we are all about, let me offer some insight. Part of nearly every meeting is spent listening thoughtfully to where the members are in their personal and professional lives and offering advice and prayers as needed.

Another important aspect of our meetings is fellowship with other church women, sometimes in fun, stress defusing social events like our outing to see the author Anne Lamott discuss her new book or a viewing of an Irish movie with a message for our St. Patrick's Day gathering.  Sometimes we have a more serious or directed discussion. At our May meeting, our own Barbara Allen discussed her award-winning book "Still Christian After All These Years," and gave us some great exercises to improve our ability to tell a story; a meeting that was thoroughly enjoyed by both old and new attendees. The fellowship among the group is perhaps the most important part. As Teresa Hoyt told the congregation at the 8 a.m. service recently, to her, this is one of the most important events she is involved in at St. Patrick's.

We meet on the second Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. in either the Parish Hall or the Parlor. We have snacks (sometimes wine), good conversation, and definitely a good time. All are welcome.

We will also offer generous space to explore our own experiences and reflections. We will meet 5/14, 5/21 and 5/28. Led by Fr. Dick, CeCe Balboni and others.

This method requires that the ministers stand in silence with the person requesting prayer and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to him or her directly. Membership is open and requires only that one believe in the Holy Spirit and the power of prayer. It is impossible to be a part of this process and not be moved. For more information, contact Dorothy Bishop at 404-634-8098 or e-mail her here.

Adult Formation Classes:

  • Roundtable Discussion Series, Parlor
  • Dreams: A Way to Listen to God, Library
  • The Old Testament: Messages For Today - Too often we think of the Old Testament as writings concerned with whatever was happening "way back when" and fail to see their relevance to the way we live some thousands of years later.  In this class we will look at selected Old Testament books and the message they have to teach us about living in the 21st century. Meets in Boardroom 8a/8b

May 4-May 25  Praying the Psalms - A four week look at psalms from the time of Moses to the present led by Deacon Ed.

 Did you know:
  • The people of God have been singing and praying psalms for more than 3,000 years?
  • The Psalter (book of psalms) is the songbook of the people of God in gathered worship?
  • The Book of Common Prayer devotes 20% of its pages to the psalms?
  • Psalms in The Book of Common Prayer are arranged for Morning and Evening Prayer so that the entire book of psalms will be read every 30 days?
  • David is the author of about 1/2 of the psalms?

During the four Sundays in May we'll learn more about this beautiful section of Holy Scripture and talk about how praying the ancient psalms is relevant to our walk with God today.

Week Three - Christian application of this ancient Jewish songbook including Cramner's approach in the Book of Common Prayer

Week Four - Singing (chanting) the Psalms - from ancient times to today's Anglican chant forms

We'll use Walter Brueggemann's book "Praying the Psalms: Engaging Scripture and the Life of the Spirit" as our guide. The book is available on Amazon.com and other retail outlets.

Join us for lively discussion and discover new ways to use the psalms to enrich your conversation with God.

  • Contemplative Class: A Native View of God: Some of us have had transformative encounters with Indigenous peoples and their ways of relating to God. We will explore these experiences and discuss how to relate to indigenous cultures and see God and the land through their eyes and how it can inform our walk with Christ. Come and join in our sharing. We will not follow a book per se, but inspiring materials can be suggested to those who are interested. Contact Jon Richardson with questions or suggestions. Reach Jon at 770-451-7519 or email him here. RSVP's are appreciated, but are not required. Meets in Gathering Room.
