The Shamrock - May 7, 2014

Dear friends,

We really did church this weekend! Beginning with the washing in prayer of The Gathering on Friday night, hearing each other in an active and fruitful meeting after the 8am, meeting Jesus on the road to Emmaus at our Sunday morning services, and lunch with over 20 Young(ish) adults and children at Marlow's Tavern, we wrapped up with our fabulous Celebration Eucharist and dinner Sunday Evening (thanks especially to Tay

lor Harper, our preacher, Grace Barrett our intercessor, and Patti Barrett and Elaine Judge our facilitators!). Plans are already underway for another Sunday Celebration on June 1!

Now for a quick parish update.

Your vestry unanimously supports devoting parish time, energy, and resources toward developing our program for Young Adults, including young singles and young families. To this end, we will begin a search for an Assistant Priest with a passion for Young Adult ministry, with the hope of extending a call by the fall. The truly awesome and obvious benefit of the ministry of an additional priest is empowerment among all of our many ministries under this big tent at St. Patrick's. Please pray for us as we form a selection committee and enter into mutual discernment with candidates.

Meanwhile, our Youth ministry is very much on my heart and mind as Ashley Lytle transitions to another Parish. Having two youth in the program, the Games have skin in this game, and I am more than dedicated to tending, nourishing and encouraging this particular group in our Parish family.

And so, we will gather the Youth and parents during the Sunday School hour on Sunday, May 25, to listen, discern and dream about our Youth Program. Yes, this is Memorial Day Weekend! But hopefully we will have enough youth and parents in town that day to start this important work before summer begins in earnest.

In all of this, one thing is for sure: God is on the move among us-and that is so very exciting!

Let me hear an "Amen!"

With gratitude and excitement,

D+

Wonderful Wednesdays  - Looking At The Resurrection: Join us during the Great Fifty Days of Easter as we explore the resurrection through the lenses of Scripture, Tradition and Reason. Guided first by the Scripture, we will survey perspectives on the resurrection as understood by the Church, mystics, and even modern science. We will also offer generous space to explore our own experiences and reflections. We will meet 5/7, 5/14, 5/21 and 5/28. Led by Fr. Dick, CeCe Balboni and others.

Dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. The cost for children 12-years and younger is $5.00, cost of an adult meal is $7.00. Please be sure to be a part of this upcoming program and dinner. Email your reservations to Amanda Vaughn by the Monday before - please note if you need childcare.

"Being Mary and Martha" Group - May 13: Formerly known as the Professional Women's Group, the "Being Mary and Martha" group will gather for our May meeting on Tuesday, May 13 at 7 pm. Our guest will be St Patrick's own Barbara Allen, who will discuss some of her literary works with us. We'll also have time for fellowship afterwards. Doors open at 6:30 pm. Bring a snack to share if you can. All are welcome.

Prayer Ministry - May 17 - "Let go, let God": Join us for a light breakfast Sat. morning May 17 at 9:30 a.m. followed by a Sunday Morning Prayer Ministry workshop at 10:00 a.m. until noon. Fr. Dick Game and Fr. Gray Temple will lead those interested in joining the ministry by explaining the unique form of prayer used.

This method requires that the ministers stand in silence with the person requesting prayer and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to him or her directly. Membership is open and requires only that one believe in the Holy Spirit and the power of prayer. It is impossible to be a part of this process and not be moved.

For more information, contact Dorothy Bishop at 404-634-8098 or e-mail her here.

Youth Sunday - May 18: The commitment of our Youth and parents during Lemonade Day two weeks ago resulted in parking donations of nearly $6k! Yay!! Youth and Parents will gather on Sunday, May 25, during the Sunday School hour, to listen, discern and dream about our Youth Program.

Pentecost Picnic - June 8: Save the date of June 8 for our Pentecost Picnic. Buy your tickets this Sunday. This is one of the biggest events of the year. Following the amazing 10:30 Pentecost Service, we will have food, music, fun and games on the back lawn.   The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for kids, $25 per family maximum. When you buy your ticket, sign up to bring one dozen deviled eggs or a dessert or sodas. Ministry Update

Garden of Eatin' Update: Happy spring! We have begun planting our spring and summer crops in the Garden of Eatin'. For those of you not familiar with the Garden, it is an organic garden planted and harvested for and by Malachi's storehouse volunteers and clients to provide fresh produce and gardening education for Malachi's clients (and the rest of us. too!) It is located behind the church so visit it any time. We are requesting donations of cucumber and squash plants, please! Simply drop them off under eaves by garden and we will happily plant them. As always, we need garden volunteers who can join us on Wednesday afternoons or assist with our weekly watering schedule. Please contact Wendy  or James.Thank you!

Cloverleaf: The Spring Cloverleaf, on the love of books and reading, is here! Pick up your copy at church and save this favorite little publication some money for postage. You can read it on our website here.

Hospitality House:
We hope you are enjoying having a space and time for catching up with your St. Patrick's Family and having a little comfort food now that Hospitality House is back. Let us know how you like the changes to Hospitality House, which make hosting much more manageable for most hosts. If you would like to host or bring a tray of food, we having openings for May 18, May 25, and June 1.  Please sign up at the Parish Hall Bulletin Board or email Elaine.

50 Days of Easter: As Paschal candles are lit throughout the world on  Easter morning to signal the resurrection of Jesus Christ, Bishop Rob Wright will ignite 50 days of online Easter prayer throughout the 109 communities of the Episcopal Church in Middle and North Georgia.  Click here to find out how to participate.

Stephen Ministry:
"Get On With Your Life" - but you can't. You may grieve the loss of a loved one for years. And the first year can be all downhill.  A Stephen Minister would like to care for you. Stephen Ministers are trained and supervised to care sensitively for those going through difficult times. Call Fr Dick at (770) 455-6523 to be put in touch with a Stephen Minister. Anything you discuss will be kept strictly confidential.

  • The Old Testament: Messages For Today - Too often we think of the Old Testament as writings concerned with whatever was happening "way back when" and fail to see their relevance to the way we live some thousands of years later.  In this class we will look at selected Old Testament books and the message they have to teach us about living in the 21st century. Meets in Boardroom 8a/8b

May 4-May 25  Praying the Psalms - A four week look at psalms from the time of Moses to the present led by Deacon Ed.

 Did you know:
  • The people of God have been singing and praying psalms for more than 3,000 years?
  • The Psalter (book of psalms) is the songbook of the people of God in gathered worship?
  • The Book of Common Prayer devotes 20% of its pages to the psalms?
  • Psalms in The Book of Common Prayer are arranged for Morning and Evening Prayer so that the entire book of psalms will be read every 30 days?
  • David is the author of about 1/2 of the psalms?

During the four Sundays in May we'll learn more about this beautiful section of Holy Scripture and talk about how praying the ancient psalms is relevant to our walk with God today.

Week Three - Christian application of this ancient Jewish songbook including Cramner's approach in the Book of Common Prayer

Week Four - Singing (chanting) the Psalms - from ancient times to today's Anglican chant forms

We'll use Walter Brueggemann's book "Praying the Psalms: Engaging Scripture and the Life of the Spirit" as our guide. The book is available on Amazon.com and other retail outlets.

Join us for lively discussion and discover new ways to use the psalms to enrich your conversation with God.

  • Contemplative Class: A Native View of God: Some of us have had transformative encounters with Indigenous peoples and their ways of relating to God. We will explore these experiences and discuss how to relate to indigenous cultures and see God and the land through their eyes and how it can inform our walk with Christ. Come and join in our sharing. We will not follow a book per se, but inspiring materials can be suggested to those who are interested. Contact Jon Richardson with questions or suggestions. Reach Jon at 770-451-7519 or email him here. RSVP's are appreciated, but are not required. Meets in Gathering Room.
