 Palm Sunday: You Are There!

Fr. Dick Game

Some years ago, CBS television aired a show entitled, "You Are There." At the beginning of each show, CBS anchor Walter Cronkite described the episode's event in history, introduced its characters, and then announced to the viewing public that, "All things are as they were then, except... You Are There."

Palm Sunday is the liturgical equivalent of a "You Are There" episode. We begin it with the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, palm branches waving. We hear how Jesus was betrayed, seized, cried, tortured, convicted and crucified. And we end with an earthquake and the tearing of the curtain of the Temple from top to bottom as Jesus draws his last breath.

That famous TV show invited us to watch and consider past events from the detached comfort of our living rooms. But our liturgy this Palm Sunday, or Passion Sunday, prompts more than passive reflection. Our liturgy does not ask, "What sort of day was it?" Instead, it asks "What sort of day is it, for us?"

And so Palm Sunday is not to be observed. Rather, it calls us into the story itself, where we may be moved and altered yet again. We are invited to participate in that story with our minds, our hearts and our bodies, beginning with the procession of palms.

Join us before the services as we begin our march with Jesus toward Jerusalem. All things are as they were then, except...You Are There!

Blessings.

Our 8:00 a.m. Palm Sunday service will begin as we gather under the portico to process into the chapel.

We will begin our second service at 10:30 a.m. by processing from Summer's Landing (just north of the church, corner N. Peachtree and Tilly Mill) to St. Patrick's in a joyous celebration of the entrance to Jerusalem. Please bring drums of all shapes and sizes -- bongos, congas, djembes, Celtic drums, and other instruments to make noise during the procession. No skill needed, just joyful noise! Please join us at Summer's Landing as you are able, or at any point along our way to the nave. The nave will be open for those who wish to join the procession there.
