The Shamrock - March 26, 2014

For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11-13

Dear friends,

Your vestry was hard at work this past weekend on retreat at The Hinton Center in Hayesville, NC. And we return to you bonded, energized, and assured that God has plans for us! Many thanks to Keith Harper for facilitating the weekend and our group feast on Friday night!

After much prayer, wide ranging discussion and intentional focus on our life together, we agreed on three areas that we will devote significant time and energy to this year: (1) participation at the 10:30 a.m. service; (2) communication, change management and conflict resolution; and (3) young adults. Teams were formed and are already engaging this exciting work!

We are pleased to share other wonderful news. Parishioner John Williams, who passed away a few weeks ago, has left the Parish a gift of $500,000. This most generous and amazing bequest is both a symbol of John's trust and confidence in our stewardship and mission (and specifically our inclusivity), and an undeniable gift from God, perfectly timed for this point in our growth in Christ.

Your Vestry has balanced its rejoicing in John's generosity with a commitment to be the very best stewards possible. We are taking it slowly here at first, and we bid your prayers with us over the next weeks as we discern next steps.

Your Vestry are happy to hear from you on these and other parish matters. Just catch them before or after services, or by phone, text or email. And, as always, Vestry meetings are open to all--know that we would love to hear from you!

With grateful hearts,

Fr. Dick Game, Rector                                    Andy Schuyler,Senior Warden

This Week

Welcome Fr. Joseph Herring to St. Patrick's! Fr. Herring will be our celebrant for Sunday's services. Fr. Herring is a native of New Jersey, a graduate of Dartmouth College and General Seminary, and a priest with over 51 years of ordained experience. After serving six dioceses as a trained interim priest, he and his wife moved to Alpharetta in 2005. Since then, he has been active as a teacher, preacher, and pastor in ten congregations. We are happy to have you, Fr. Herring!

Lenten Meditation Booklets: During the season of Lent the Episcopal Relief and Development ministry is focusing on Economic Empowerment for women using a wonderful daily meditation booklet which is free for the parish: they are on the table outside the office and in the nave on the usher table. Would you join us in taking just a few moments a day during Lent to reflect on the burden so many sisters across the globe endure each day in holding their families and communities together?  If you have questions regarding the daily meditation or involvement with the Episcopal Relief and Development please email James Tola or call him at 678.467.2222. More information can be found here.

Celtic Evening Prayer on Sundays in Lent:
We invite you to experience God's goodness in the profound simplicity of Evening Prayer inspired by the Celtic tradition. We will gather each Sunday in Lent in the Chapel at 5:00 p.m. for liturgy led by clergy and parishioners. Come to the quiet. Come to adore. Come to be transformed this Lent.

Wonderful Wednesday Night Dinner and Program: Our dinner and program continues in Lent. The cost for children 12-years and younger is $5.00, cost of an adult meal is $7.00. Please be sure to be a part of this upcoming program and dinner. Email your reservations to Amanda Vaughn by the Monday before - please note if you need childcare.

St. Patrick's Library News: Have you visited the library lately? If not, we invite you to do so. It's a lovely quiet space to check out the books and sit and read or just be quiet for a while. If there are books you would like to order, let us know. If you have books to donate, please do so. If you rescued any of the books during the "Great Purge" of several years ago and want to see them back on the shelves again, bring them in. We welcome your comments and ideas. ~ Elaine Perkins and Brenda Marquis

Ministry Update

Malachis web logo

$14,000 Raised for Malachi's Storehouse: The numbers continue to rise as contributions still are coming in! So far we have raised $14,000 to feed those in need. As Malachi's Storehouse fed 31,600 visitors last year, this money is greatly needed. There's still time to give as the campaign runs until March 31. See Kathy Malcolm Hall if you are interested in joining the circle of generosity.

Stephen Ministry: Changes can be difficult, especially when they are unexpected. Stephen Ministers are trained to help people learn to cope with unwelcome changes in their lives for as long as they are needed. If you have experienced great changes or know someone who has, learn more about Stephen Ministry by calling Fr Dick at (770) 455-6523. Everything you tell a Stephen Minister is kept absolutely confidential.

Psalm 23 Revisited

I am my own shepherd,
I shall always be in want.

I make me to lie down on brown straw,
and lead me into troubled waters.

I deplete my soul,
and guide me along wrong pathways,
    for my names sake.

Though I stumble through the valley
    of the shadow of life,
    I shall fear all evil.

For I am alone,
    my rod and my staff,
    disappoint me.

I spread a small picnic before me,
in the absence of those who love me.

I have no oil to anoint my head,
and my cup is cracked, and empty.

I hope goodness and mercy find me,
    some day, in my life.

And I shall dwell in my house,
    alone for a short time.
