The Shamrock - January 8, 2014

Dear friends,

CeCe Balboni leaned over to me at our Epiphany Bonfire and whispered, "It is such a good thing that the star stopped." And she was so right. For the wise men had been following the heavenly sign, not knowing what the pilgrimage would cost them or where or when it would end. But, at last, the star stopped over the place where the Christ child lay. The search was over and a new kind of following had begun.

The wise men came bearing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. And they brought a fourth gift, too--the gift of their presence--for they had come from afar to worship him. (Matt. 2:2)

We, too, have journeyed, and we have found Christ among us. We come bearing gifts. Gifts like a commitment to prayer, the willingness to be a more accessible spouse or parent, a desire to serve others on vestry, or through a ministry of the parish or outside our walls.

I am eager to see what gifts we bring this Epiphany. And I am especially excited to join with you all as we offer that fourth gift - the gift of our presence in worship!

Epiphany blessings!

The basket we used at the Epiphany Eve service to collect notes reflecting our offering of gifts will be available during the Sunday services throughout the season of Epiphany. Please drop a note in the basket whenever and as often as you feel moved.

Liturgy Note: We will be continuing our Advent practice of silence before the services. From 7:45 a.m. until 8:00 a.m. and again from 10:15 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. we ask for silence in the office and narthex as well as in the chapel and the nave.  While there are no announcements, every attempt will be made to include all necessary information about church happenings in the service bulletin. That means the services will start promptly at 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

If you have announcements you would like placed in the bulletin and/or Shamrock, please email them to Amanda Vaughn by noon on Tuesdays.

CGS Parent Meeting: After church this Sunday, Jan. 12, we invite families of all CGS students to a meeting after church in the Parish Hall.  We would like to discuss the spring and summer calendar, and we seek your input on the direction the children's ministry is to take. A light lunch will be provided.  The children are invited to stay, but if you need child care for a preschooler, please email Victoria Schwartz. It is very important for us to get feedback from the parents and students, so please make every effort to attend. Thanks so much: Victoria Schwartz on behalf of all the staff and teachers in CGS.

Beth Sarah Wright, Bishop Rob Wright's wife, will be our speaker for the event, speaking on the topic of "Say Yes to God...Again!". Tickets are $15. To purchase a ticket, please email CeCe Balboni or  Kathy Malcolm-Hall, or call Kathy at 678-687-5357.

Wonderful Wednesday Night Dinner and Program:Our dinner and program resumes Wednesday, Jan. 15. We start with a terrific three week course on Hellenistic and Roman Influences on Early Christianity, led by Daniel Shoemake. The earliest Christians lived in a pluralistic world; Jewish and "pagan" cultures informed the texts, thoughts, and traditions of young Christian communities. This class seeks to explore the Greek and Latin influences on the early Church and to explore the evolution of Christianity from its non-Jewish heritage. The goal of this class is to realize that multiple religious and cultural backgrounds influenced the creation and evolution of Christian theology and practice. Daniel received degrees in Ancient Greek and Latin and is completing his Master of Divinity at Emory University. He is a Postulant to the Priesthood in our Diocese, working as the seminarian at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church.

Our meal on Wednesday will be a delicious catered Greek meal. The cost for children 12-years and younger is $5.00, cost of an adult meal is $7.00.

Please be sure to be a part of this upcoming program and dinner. Email your reservations to Amanda Vaughn by the Monday before - please note if you need childcare.

Hospitality House Is Back: On Sunday, Jan. 12, there will be a Hospitality House!!! Come catch up with your St. Patrick's community and enjoy a little comfort food to stave off the hunger pangs as you chat. We are trying some new concepts to make Hospitality House more manageable for those that would like to support it by hosting or by bringing one tray of food. If you would like to host for a particular Sunday or bring a tray of food for a particular Sunday, please sign up at the parish hall bulletin board or email Elaine Judge.

Professional Women's Group: The group will take the month of January off and reconvene in February 2014.

Baptisms: If you or your children haven't been baptized and are considering it, we'd like to know. We are hoping to have some baptisms on Easter Sunday (April 20). Email Father Dick if you are interested.
