Ministry Spotlight: The Cloverleaf
By Barbara Allen

What is your gift? Can you preach? Teach? Perform and/or write music? For years you could tell your story here at St. Patrick's, in songs, sermons or testimonies. But if not, you were out of luck. In 1996 we decided there was a need for a vehicle to share our faith stories with the written word, to see the Lord at work and to get better acquainted with each other. So we started the Cloverleaf, a quarterly magazine of prose, poetry, artwork and photography. The name was a natural, and it easily beat out the second choice, Parish the Thought (Thanks be to God). Our original intension was to just announce the publication's existence and throw the net wide. But we found that having a theme to prime the pump was a more fruitful way to go.

So over the years, we've done issues on the themes of friendship, music, healing, outreach, new beginnings, childhood faith, neighbors and sacred travel. Our most recent publication traced the history of the 14-year art project, the Stations of the Cross. Each of these subjects became a jewel in the crown - varied, sparkly and life-affirming. We've gotten to know the behind-the-scenes tales of adventures we'd only heard about. We've witnessed some long-kept secrets of redemption. We've enjoyed heartfelt stories of love, forgiveness and long shots that hit the mark. Now in the works is the 2013 All Saints issues, which will memorialize our favorite people - gone, but not forgotten. This issue has legs - it gets mailed to friends and relatives to keep and keep. We just heard about a family this Chistmas reading aloud from a story in the 2001 All Saints issue, sweet memories brought alive again.

What did the staff and contributors get all these 17 years in return for their efforts? We learned that tears puddle up in the bottom of your eye glasses at the computer. At social gatherings, we saw back issues spread out on a coffee table in a fan. We got a wonderful dental plan. We kept confidential parts that needed to be locked away. We've watched people who insisted, "I can't write!" be wrong indeed.

Jump on board any time with a check or an article. (We lied about the dental plan).

We have a wonderful new Cloverleaf coming and it will be ready for you Sunday, 11/3, All Saints Day. If you pick yours up, it will save us postage. And speaking of money, we're still short on funds for this issue, so a check in memory of your favorite saint would be a good thing right about now.

And, we'll be celebrating with something new this year: a joyous Epiphany party, including the burning of the greens as well as our usual feasting and dancing. Stay tuned for more details about these Christmastime events and all the joys and prayers in between. Dana Dolan, Parish Life

Foyer Groups: If you are looking for a way to get connected; meet new people; and enjoy some food, fellowship, and fun; we invite you to join a St. Patrick's Foyers Group. Three foyers groups are currently formed and more will be formed during this fall season. Groups meet every four to six weeks from winter to spring. What better way to spend an evening than with a cordial dinner party among your fellow parishioners? It might be an informal dinner setting at home or a night out on the town with dinner and a play.  Several members have said that foyers is how they first felt really connected to our parish. So sign up today by emailing Diane Rankin.

Homeless Requiem: The 25th Annual Homeless Requiem will be held at the Cathedral of St. Philip on Nov. 1 at 7:00 p.m. The Cathedral of St. Philip and The Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless have sponsored a Requiem Eucharist on The Feast of All Saints for the past 25 years. The Eucharist is preceded by a sit down dinner for more than 600 homeless folks who arrive by bus from the many shelters in Atlanta. This beautiful celebration of Holy Eucharist celebrates and honors the memories of our sisters and brothers who have died on the streets or in deepest poverty in the past year.

The Metro Atlanta Task Force for the Homeless was founded by our long term parishioners and parish leaders, Jim and Anita Beaty.  We may know it better by the name Peachtree-Pine for which we pray here every week. Jim and Anita continue to provide leadership and inspiration for the Task Force to this day.

This year's Requiem will be very special for our parish. The Rev. Dr. Jim Beaty will be the preacher and necrologist. Our Deacon Ed Fuller will be the Master of Ceremonies and Intercessor and our own Rev. Mary Wetzel will proclaim the Gospel and serve at the altar.

One very special offering over the past few years has been beautiful choral music offered by "Voices of Hope" - a women's choir from Lee Arrendale Prision (formerly from Metro Atlanta Women's Prison before its closing). Maestro Fred Scott former Associate Director of The Atlanta Symphony and Director of The Atlanta Opera accompanies the chorus as they sing thanksgivings for the lives of our friends. The music is absolutely magnificent as their voices soar through the arches and vaults of the cathedral. If you haven't heard "Voices of Hope" this is a must. Come at 6:00pm to hear the extended prelude offering.
