Press Release for Immediate Release
AGTS at Evangel to host 8th annual Horton Lectureship Series
SPRINGFIELD, Mo. --- The Assemblies of God Theological Seminary at Evangel University will host Dr. Renea Brathwaite as the guest lecturer for the 8th annual Dr. Stanley M. Horton Pentecostal Heritage Lectureship Series, Feb. 9-11, 2016.

Dr. Brathwaite, a 2005 graduate of AGTS, is recognized as an outstanding scholar, teacher and preacher, according to Dr. Mark Hausfeld, president of AGTS. "We are honored to welcome him back to campus for this special event," said Hausfeld.

Evangel University launched the Horton Lectureship Series in April of 2008, to reinforce the importance of the Pentecostal heritage of the Assemblies of God.

The series was named for long-time Springfieldian, Dr. Stanley M. Horton, who was a renowned scholar, prolific writer and worldwide lecturer. He was recognized during his lifetime as Pentecostalism's premier theologian.

Dr. Horton also served collectively from 1948-1991 as a professor at Central Bible College and AGTS.

The lectures

Dr. Brathwaite will speak on "A Re-Examination of the Theology of William J. Seymour, a Pentecostal Pioneer," at 2 p.m. (central) each day, in the William J. Seymour Chapel at AGTS.

The Rev. Seymour was born in Louisiana in 1870, the son of former slaves. At 35, he was invited to Los Angeles to preach and soon became the leader of the 1906 Azusa Street revival, which is regarded as the beginning of the modern Pentecostal movement.

Dr. Brathwaite's lectures will be streamed live at agts.edu.

1. "Double-Consciousness: The Religio-Cultural Framework of William J. Seymour's Theology and Praxis"
2. "William J. Seymour and 'Bible Evidence'"
3. "William J. Seymour and Racial Reconciliation at the Azusa Street Revival"

The speaker

Dr. Brathwaite was born in Barbados, a small island-nation in the Caribbean. He first came to Springfield via New York City to attend AGTS. There he earned a Master of Arts in Theological Studies, graduating summa cum laude.

While in Springfield, he also spent two years as an adjunct faculty member in Evangel University's theology department.

In 2006, Dr. Brathwaite relocated his family to Virginia Beach, in order to pursue a terminal degree in theology at Regent University's School of Divinity. In May of 2013, he defended his dissertation on the theology of the early Pentecostal pioneer William J. Seymour.

He now holds a PhD, having been named Presidential Scholar for three consecutive years and having received both the Outstanding Graduate and Distinguished Graduate awards.

While at Regent, he served as a teaching/editorial assistant and adjunct graduate professor for the university, taught classes in his home church, served on the church's preaching rotation, and was a member of its pastoral ministry team.

Dr. Brathwaite currently teaches at Malone University, in Canton, Ohio. He is an active member in the Society of Pentecostal Studies, which was co-founded by Dr. Horton, and he was also recently appointed as dean of the Ohio Ministry Network's Ohio School of Ministry.

For more than twenty-two years, Dr. Brathwaite has been happily married to Joy, who currently serves as vice president of finance and business affairs at Malone. They have two children, Kara and Andrew.
