Summer Festivals of Japan

 An Insider Experience
Almost every shrine in Japan celebrates its own matsuri or local festival. With enjoyment and laughter guaranteed, a matsuri is all about having fun with friends and family and are great opportunities to dress up to celebrate local traditions. Put on a yukata (summer kimono) and join the locals! Enjoy many traditional Japanese foods such as yakisoba, takoyaki and okonomiyaki.
Many matsuri feature beautifully decorated floats or dashi, which are pulled by townspeople accompanied by drum and flute music. Every festival has its own characteristics although most are very colorful, energetic and lively.
So many of Japan's matsuri take place every summer in July and August. The festival of Kyoto's Yasaka Shrine, Gion Matsuri, features a parade of tall floats over twenty meters high. The festival of Osaka's Tenmangu Shrine, the Tenjin Matsuri, features a lavish procession not only through the streets of Osaka, but also on boats along the river accompanied by a firework display. At the Kanto Matsuri, over two hundred long bamboo poles with up to 46 lanterns attached to each are balanced by the members of this popular festival's nightly parades.
