Just a short way southeast of Nagoya lies the reopened Ise Shrine. Ise Jingu reflects all the ideas of the Shinto religion, the indigenous religion of Japan, where gods or kami are said to reside in rocks, trees, and special sanctuaries in which the gods are enshrined. Nearby is Meota Iwa, sacred rocks in the sea tied together by a rope called shimenawa representing male and female dieties.
