Greetings!

"Repurposed."  "Reclaimed."  These words are all the rage right now in decorating inside and outside the home.  Aside from being interesting and unique, these kinds of materials can also save you money.  Some landscaping experts say it is a good idea to begin with an "inspiration" piece to build your landscape around and to activate your imagination.  Discarded brick and stones can always be incorporated somewhere, maybe for a raised flower bed or walkway.

As an extension of the home, your yard can have many purposes.  It is important to have a plan of action and to know what you would like the space to accomplish.  Do you like to grill?  Do you have kids/grandkids/pets?  Will you be entertaining friends?  Do you need a tranquil place to relax?  These are all great questions to ask before you start your landscape design, as well as, questions regarding which plants will thrive in your specific location.  Whatever the reason for your makeover, a nice home landscape can bring great value to your property.

Sincerely,

 Susie and Nichola

Lawns are Grassy Ecosystems that Offer Beauty, Protect Environment

Lawns provide a safe place for families to gather and for children and pets to play, but grass is also great at combating many environmental challenges.  Below are some ways a grassy lawn can help the environment.
  • Filters and captures runoff waterRain tends to "sheet off" hard surfaces, turning rainwater into fast-moving, storm-water runoff.  Grass slows down and absorbs runoff, while also cleansing water of impurities and dust.  Grass filtration is often as much as 10 times less acidic than water running off a hard surface.
  • Reduces heat in the summer.  Studies have shown that grassy lawns can be 31 degrees cooler than asphalt and 20 degrees cooler than bare soil.  That means lower energy bills and a nicer environment.
  • Improves air qualityGrass plays a vital role in capturing dust, smoke particles and other pollutants.  Without grass, these pollutants will remain in the air, resulting in more "code red" air-quality days.
  • Absorbs carbon dioxideThe lawn is the largest carbon sink in the United States.  Carbon sinks are natural systems that suck-up and store green-house-gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
  • Generates oxygenLawns are incredible oxygen producers.  A 50-foot square area of turf produces enough oxygen to meet the daily needs of a family of four.
  • Supports biodiversity.  Grass, trees, shrubs and other plants provide food and habitats for birds and small mammals.
  • Controls soil erosion.  Without grass, soil erodes into streams and lakes, muddying the waters and limiting the amount of sunlight that penetrates the water.  The nutrients and chemicals carried with soil can cause algae blooms, which steal oxygen from the water and kill fish.

Create a Budget-Friendly Home Landscape

Homeowners understandably envy the award-worthy photo spreads in lawn and garden magazines.  However, not everyone has the budget or design team to create such lavish landscape designs.  But, with some frugal spending, planning and budgeting, anyone can create a beautiful lawn they can be proud of.

  • Establish a budget.  This is the first step to any project.
  • Find an inspiration piece.  Great landscapes are inspired by many things, whether it's a memorable piece of art or a landscape layout in a magazine.  As long as the theme is cohesive, it will be pleasing to the eye.
  • Consider the space and how you want to use it.  Understanding how you want to use the space will help you better allocate your budget.  If it is more of a retreat, look for ways to create a private, vacation feel.  If you have kids or will be entertaining friends consider some durable plants and recreational aspects, such as a pool, play area, etc.
  • Think about reclaimed or repurposed materials. Brand new items can eat up a budget.  Repurposed items can save money and add a unique flair to a landscape.  Paint can refresh used patio sets and inexpensive flower pots.   Discarded bricks or stones can be worked into a patio space or used to create raised garden beds.
  • Buy native plants.  Native plants will fare better than exotic, non-native plants.  That means less time nurturing and less money having to replace the plants that can't withstand your climate.
  • Consider perennial plants.  Perennials may cost more at the onset, but the savings will be realized in the years to come.

  • Hire a professional.  It may seem counterintuitive to spend money on a landscaping pro when you've established a strict budget, but their experience can guide you in the right direction and help you avoid potentially costly mistakes.

Check out these best, worst trees to plant in Arkanas yards.

The experts at your local nursery should be able to help you decide what trees would work best for your needs.  Below are a few of the best and worst trees to plant in Arkansas.

Steer clear of the following trees:
Ash - These trees are sturdy and tough, but they are threatened by the emerald ash borer, a tiny beetle that's on track to wipe out the species.  If you want something long-term, ash isn't the way to go.
Willow - Beautiful, but they have aggressive, water-hungry roots that interfere with drain fields, sewer lines and irrigation pipes.  In addition, the wood is weak and prone to cracking.
Bradford Pear - Great looking trees, but are highly prone to splitting and cracking when they reach maturity, which means storms and snow/ice put them at risk.  You never know when they'll come falling down.
Black Walnut - Produces lots of shade, but along with that comes pollen and fruit you have to clean up in the fall.  Also produces growth-inhibiting toxins that kill nearby plants.

Boost your home's curb appeal with these trees:
Crepe Myrtle - These might just be perfect for Arkansas because neither droughts nor hot and sunny weather bothers them.  They even bloom in the summer after most trees are through blooming.  Just give them plenty of room to grow and prune them more lightly than other trees.
Sugar Maple - Can be sustained in most soils and a wide range of temperatures.  It is a good replacement for ash or elm trees and the foliage is beautiful.
Northern Red Oak - Mature at 150 years of age and can live for 300 years.  Provide lots of shade and their branches are very sturdy.
Eastern Red Cedar - Can thrive in just about any soil, and they love sun.  Also, birds love them.
