"When we were ready to place our home on the market, we decided to check with local banks, friends, etc.  We kept hearing a common name, 'Susie Burns'.  We didn't know her at first, but after working with her, we found her to be very pleasant and professional.  She is easy to work with and created a trustworthy and lasting relationship with us.  We highly recommend Susie for selling your home."

Larry and Roz Shaw

Greetings!

Curb appeal is a very important part of maintaining a home, and since spring is just around the corner, now is a good time to start planning for outdoor projects.  Take a good look at your home from the street and think about what you could do to improve the look of your home.  Trimming trees and shrubs is important, but adding color with a door, bench or shutters may also give it some pizazz.  Your home has but one chance to make a great first impression, and if you are thinking about selling, it is very important to take the necessary steps to make your home stand out in the crowd.

Sincerely,

 Susie and Nichola

Late Winter Recommendations for a Beautiful Yard in Spring and Summer

1.)  Prune Trees and Shrubs.  Hardwoods, fruit trees, Knockout Roses and other shrubs or trees that flower after May 15 should be pruned in late winter.  Pruning while dormant in late winter reduces the risk of disease or pests attacking the plant.  You might want to research or consult a local nursery regarding your species of plant.  They can give you tips on how to prune your plants so they are ready to "show out" in the spring.
**Wait to trim fruit trees until the end of the month.  This is also a good time to plant fruit trees.**

2.)  Prune ornamental grasses, summer blooming spireas and crapemyrtles.

3.)  Wait to prune spring flowering plants like Climbing Roses, Azaleas, Gardenias, Hydrangeas and Forsynthia until after blooming.

4.)  Apply Pre-Emergent & Weed Control.  For a beautiful lawn all summer, treat your yard with a fertilizer/weed control before the end of the month.

5.)  Fertilize bulb plants - As the flower stalks begin to emerge, fertilize with a complete fertilizer like Ferti-Lome Start-N-Grow.

6.)  Fertilize Pansies and Violas - As the days get warmer and these flowers begin to rebound, remember to fertilize to insure good blooming through the end of the season.

7.)  Plant A Cool Season Vegetable Garden.

Exterior Lighting Can Improve Home's Safety, Appearance

When drafting a to-do list for home improvements that can increase value and appeal, you might want to consider an outdoor lighting scheme that can make your home safer and more alluring.  It serves various purposes.  It can draw attention to more impressive parts of a property, improve a home's safety and deter would-be intruders.

To get started, make note of existing lighting and where improvements can be made.  Next, consider efficiency and function.  Energy-saving LED bulbs, fluorescent lights, or even solar powered are all good options.

When addressing aesthetics, you should think about calling attention to certain elements of your property such as, the front door and porch, decorative trees, or water features.

Safety is an important consideration when improving your home.  Improve visibility by illuminating potential hazards, or placing lights along pathways and near pools or spas.

Added security is another reason to install more exterior lighting.  Dark homes are more attractive to burglars.  Eliminate dark corners where intruders may be able to access your home.  This includes doorways and ground-level windows.  Motion-sensor lights can also save energy.

If you're not sure where to begin, visit with an electrician or a landscape designer.  Each can offer suggestions on what options will be the best fit for your particular property.

Efficient Garage Doors Improve Comfort & Appearance

It can get uncomfortable working in a cold or hot garage, but another concern is your energy costs.  Even though installing a new efficient garage door will provide the most improvement in comfort and savings, there are other options.

A.)  If the existing doors operate fine and look good from outdoors, adding insulation panels and a bottom seal is an effective option.  Gluing rigid insulation panels to the indoor skin of the garage door is an easy project.

B.)  A simpler, and very efficient, option is to install an Owens Corning garage door insulation kit.  The kit includes retaining clips that stick to the door and white R-8 vinyl-backed insulation.

If you need to install a completely new door, there are many new garage-door materials.  Most frequently they are constructed of insulated steel, insulated fiberglass, wood or aluminum.

A.)  Insulated steel and fiberglass provide the best overall energy efficiency and comfortable workplace.  Some steel doors are also wind rated.

B.)  Real stained wood garage doors are probably the most attractive, but they require regular maintenance and are more difficult to insulate.  An attractive alternative is an insulated steel-skin door with a thick polymer exterior coating.  Authentic-looking wood graining is rolled into the coating and it can be stained similarly to real wood.

C.)  Steel is a good conductor of heat, so select a door that has a polymer thermal break separating the indoor and outdoor metal skins.  For extra light, choose a garage door with windows that are double pane with a low-e coating.

When selecting a garage door, examine the joint edges between the horizontal door panels.  The panels should be stepped to create a longer path to reduce air leakage.  Also, if there are children around, select a pinch-resistant edge design.
