Camp Cards are Discount Cards that local businesses in your area have donated to the Boy Scouts to help you and your Scouts raise money to go to camp. Each District has their own card with individualized deals respective to the areas they serve. Each card is sold for only $5.00 and you don't have to pay anything upfront to order cards to sell. Just tell us how many you think you can sell and we will get you some. $2.25 per card stays with the Scout so he can pay his way to go camping! The rest gets turned into the Council in April to pay for the cards and improve Avondale Scout Reservation.

SCOUTING NEWS
During the Weekend of February 6-8, the Istrouma Area Council was represented by over 40 representatives from  four different Venturing Crews at the 41st annual Exploring/Venturing Winterfest in Gatlinburg, TN. During this event, there were 3300 participants from 17 different states. Our council had more participants than any other council in Southern Region Area 1 and this was the most our council has ever sent. We will try to increase that number for next year.
While here, Crew 370 had teams place 1st and 2nd in City Navigation. Other events that were participated in by our representatives were shooting sports, presentations, engineering design, and other walk up activities. Some other Venturing activities include
aquatic  games, caving games, team sports, and cooking. Outside of the Winterfest activities, Venturers played in the snow, went snow skiing and tubing, climbed mountains, zip lined went to local attractions and shopped.
There were also lots of competitions for the Explorers also. Some of these include fire fighter competitions, police completions, and EMS competitions.

Next years Winterfest will be help the weekend of February 12-14. For more information, visit www.baswinterfest.org
We are currently looking for additional events for next years Winterfest, so if you have any ideas please let them know.

The Crews in attendance were Crew 80 with Concerned Citizens of Doyle Science in Livingston, Crew 145 with Underwater Adventures in Baton Rouge, Crew 370 with Concerned Citizens of Crew 370 in Gonzales, and Crew 478 of Broadmoor Methodist Church in Baton Rouge.

CORPORATE PINEWOOD DERBY CHALLENGE

Remember how much fun Cub Scouts was, especially the Pinewood Derby races?  Have you ever wanted to relive your childhood?  Well...now you can!

On Tuesday, April 21, 2015 we will offer the Inaugural Race to Scouting Corporate Race and "Business After Hours" at Gerry Lane Chevrolet on Florida Blvd.  This is a one of a kind event that no other organization can duplicate!

Gerry Lane Chevrolet has graciously offered to sponsor this event for us.  In addition to the races, there will be heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverages served. Trophies will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Best in Show.

In addition, after the main races are concluded, we will offer participants the chance to compete in Challenge Races.  This will be their opportunity to challenge others for bragging rights.  If everyone purchases a car and then challenges all of their friends, peers, competitors, etc. to try and beat them, we will have an incredible turnout.

Above is a flyer for this event for you to use in emailing your friends.  If you are interested, car kits are available at the Scout Office (9644 Brookline Avenue, Baton Rouge, LA 70809).

I truly believe this can be a fun, exciting and unique event that can quickly grow into another signature event for Scouting!  Please take a few minutes to send the flyer out to all of your contacts and don't forget to "throw down a challenge"!

NYLT

National Youth Leadership Training is an intense, six day, outdoor leadership training experience for youth in a troop, team, or crew. The course goal is to prepare young men and women to become superior leaders in their troop, crew, district, council, and any other organizations they belong to now.

11:00 A.M. - Sunday, May 31, 2015 through 8:30 P.M. - Friday, June 5, 2015

Participants learn to use current corporate leadership skills within the framework of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. BSA National carefully developed the NYLT curriculum with input from current corporate trainers, the United States Air Force Academy, and others in the training community. When regional pilot courses of NYLT were completed, Wood Badge for the 21st Century (advanced adult leadership training), was aligned to the NYLT Course Syllabus. Graduates of this program become senior leadership in their troop, team, crew, as well as leaders in their Schools, Churches, and Communities.

Across the nation, National Youth Leadership Training brings together in one dynamic course the youth leaders for Boy Scout troops and Venturing crews and ships. The course is led and taught by some of the best youth leaders in the Council, all of whom are graduates of NYLT.
Qualifications:
Any Scout who participates in the course must be at least a First Class Scout and 13 years old (but not yet 18), and a Scout that the Unit Leader feels is mature and currently filling a Unit leadership position or likely to assume a leadership position in the near future. The Scout may only attend on the Unit Leader's recommendation. It is important that the Scout has camping, cooking and hiking skills. There is no rank requirement for Venturers, but a recommendation is required.

Lace up your hiking boots and join the 2016 Istrouma Area Council Contingent trip to Philmont Scout Ranch

The council is currently accepting applications for the trip of a lifetime. Contact your unit leaders today and tell them you want to go on a 2 week backpacking trip to the Sangre de Christo mountains in New Mexico with your Troop, Crew, Ship, or Post.

The council has been granted four (4) Philmont Crews for 2016.  Crews will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.  Units will need to move fast to lock in one of these coveted Philmont slots.

There is also room for provisional crew members whose units aren't interested in going to Philmont.  Talk to your unit leaders and have them contact the trip organizer listed in the next section today!

Here's the Preliminary Plan

The bus departs good ol' flat Louisiana on June 25th and returns home on July 8th.  It's a straight through ride each way. Only stopping for meals, fuel, and fresh drivers. In between bus rides,           you'll make memories that will last forever.

The cost is $1650.00 per person, which includes all fees, meals, and transportation.  You must supply your own backpacking gear.  The ranch will provide a tent, if needed.

Unit Leaders please contact Scott Calkins at High.Adventure@cox.net ASAP to reserve a crew, or to discuss provisional crew members from your group.  Scott is a volunteer High Adventure Coordinator for the council.
