Prayer of the members of the Diocese of Western Michigan

Gracious God, Great Shepherd of your people, may we seek your wisdom as we listen for your voice among many voices. May we imagine boldly, pray unceasingly and act to be the community that you would have us be. May we be strengthened by our companionship with one another and by your presence in our deliberations and decision-making. May you bless the labors of those who seek our next bishop who will lead us with vigor and vision; and in this discernment may we all be encouraged in discipleship in Christ for the good of your people throughout Western Michigan. Amen

UnitedThank Offering.

The United Thank Offering (UTO) ingathering will be held Sundays May 12 and 19. United Thank Offering is a ministry of the Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout the Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world.

The Diocese of Western Michigan was recognized at the Province V meeting of Episcopal Church Women as the province diocese having the greatest percentage increase in UTO offering for 2012. Thank you for your part in making that possible.

If you prefer not to count and wrap the coins yourself, we have someone available to do it for you.   You can put your UTO box in the offering plate or keep the box and use the blue UTO envelopes available in the pews. Contact Gail Donovan (517 321-8810) if you have questions or would like additional information about the United Thank Offering.

50th anniversary Movie Night

5Oth ANNIVERSARY MOVIE NIGHT

Birdman of Alcatraz -- 1962

St. David's Episcopal Church (Great Hall)

1519 Elmwood Rd.

Open to the community

Parishioners - bring a friend, co-worker, neighbor

This is one of 1962's classic movies, starring Burt Lancaster as inmate Robert Stroud. A violent man, Stroud was committed to life in prison in solitary confinement. Stroud found an injured canary in the prison yard, and nursed it to health. At the time it was thought good for rehabilitation to allow Stroud to breed and care for canaries and do research on them   He published two books on canaries. Lancaster portrayed Stroud as a caring and humane individual, although prison records show Stroud to spend time only on what benefitted him personally.

St. David's was just starting in 1962, yet the debate still continues over prison rehabilitation as an opportunity to teach life, career and social skills that may reduce the rate of recidivism upon an inmate's release. That will be the focus of our discussion.
