August 2015

We hope you are enjoying a safe and happy summer! August 26th is National Dog Day! We know you'll find a way to make your pup feel extra special that day. In the meantime, stay cool and avoid hotspots for canine influenza.
Happy summer!
Temperatures soar in and out of the car
Remember that as temperatures soar outside, temperatures inside cars also rise quickly. We know owners enjoy taking their dogs in the car during the summer months. Dogs love a good ride and it can be a great bonding experience between pet and owner.
If you're going to take your dog out and about with you remember to NEVER leave them in the car, even on a relatively cool day. On 80-degree days car temperatures can rise from 100 to 120 degrees in a matter of minutes. Temperatures rise even higher on 90-degree days.
Dogs that stay in hot cars for even a few minutes can suffer heat stroke and even death. If you need to leave your dog in the car for a few minutes, leave the air conditioning on as cracking a window does not provide enough ventilation.
Proper planning and safety procedures for taking dogs in the car on hot days can save lives!
Canine Influenza Alert!
There is a new outbreak of canine influenza in the Chicago area. We are urging owners to take precautions and recommend that dogs stay out of high risk areas such as dog parks, grooming salons and boarding facilities for the next 4 weeks.
Symptoms of the flu are fever, lethargy, discharge from the nose, and coughing. If you notice any of these symptoms in your dog call your veterinarian immediately and keep him or her away from other dogs.
There is no vaccine available for this new strain of influenza(H3N2). However, we do have a vaccine for the older influenza virus(H3N8).
