National Dog Bite Prevention Week
As the AVMA points out, all dogs can bite. With 70 million dogs living in households across the U.S. it's estimated that millions of people are bitten by dogs each year. It's mostly children that are bitten and most of these bites, if not all, are preventable.
How do you avoid a dog bite?
  • Respect the dog's personal space. Never approach or pet an unfamiliar dog without first asking the owner's permission or without letting them sniff and see your hand first
  • Don't disturb a dog while they are sleeping, eating, chewing on a toy, or caring for puppies

Dogs will often show they are agitated and feel the need to bite by tensing their body, stiffening their tail, pulling back their ears, flicking their tongues, staring intensely, and backing away.

If you sense that the dog is going to bite there are a few things you can do to protect yourself:
  • Resist the urge to scream or run away
  • Remain motionless, with your hands by your sides and avoid eye contact with the dog
  • Once the dog loses interest back away slowly
  • If the dog attacks try feeding him/her your jacket or purse to bite instead
  • If you fall to the ground cover your ears, curl into a ball and remain motionless. Don't scream or roll around

Asthma and allergies tend to flare up in spring and tend to have a big impact on cats. Pollens, weeds, grass, and mold can spark an allergy or asthma attack.
Skunk Bath Remedy
Dr. House has seen skunks around his yard and his Golden Retriever, Phoebe, has been happily trying to play with them! He's hoping she won't get "skunked" but if she does we have a remedy ready for her and all dogs that encounter skunks!
Skunk Bath Remedy
Mix the following ingredients in a two quart container:
1 quart of 3% Hyrdogen Peroxide
1/4 cup Baking Soda
1 tablespoon liquid dish soap (Dawn)
Place pet in a bathtub and thoroughly wet them down. Pour solution on the pet, avoiding the ears and eyes. Keep mixture on for 5 minutes and then rinse off with warm water. Make a new mixture and re-apply if needed. Discard any leftover solution as baking soda and peroxide with create oxygen and the container could bust!
