Happy spring! We hope you and your pet are enjoying the sunshine and were able to get a walk in over the weekend! Thanks to everyone that attended the Hound Egg Hunt in Palatine. It was a huge success that drew out hundreds of dogs and their owners.
April is an important month for building awareness about animal cruelty. April is dedicated to educating people on what they can do to help prevent cruelty towards animals. Take time this month to visit or volunteer at your local humane society and spread the word about no kill shelters like the Buddy Foundation.

We're gearing up for our spring and summer events- stayed tuned for more information!

Alert!!!! Canine Influenza

Due to the current outbreak of Canine Influenza we are recommending that all dogs stay out of high risk areas for the next four to six weeks. High risk areas include dog parks, grooming salons, and day care and boarding facilities. If you need to visit these areas there is a vaccine available. The canine flu vaccine is a series of two vaccines given two weeks apart with coverage starting seven days after the second vaccination. Symptoms of the flu are fever, lethargy, discharge from the nose and coughing. Please call our office to schedule an appointment if your pet  is showing symptoms, have any additional questions, or would like to schedule an appointment for your vaccinations. Visit our website for a list of groomers and sitters that can come to your home during this time.

petfirstaid
National Pet First Aid Awareness Month
April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month. When dogs and cats face life threatening situations it's important to get them to the veterinarian as soon as possible. However, there are a few things owners can do on the way to the veterinarian that can help save their pet's life. The American Red Cross has created tips for owners on how to protect their pets in threatening situations on their website: http://www.redcross.org/news/article/April-Is-Pet-First-Aid-Awareness-Month
More information can be found on the Red Cross Pet First Aid App.
American Red Cross Tips for Pet Owners:
  • Signs of pet poisoning include bleeding externally or internally, dilated pupils, foaming at the mouth, and seizures
  • Pets bitten by other pets need medical attention to prevent infection and to check for internal wounds
  • If pets have a seizure make sure they are in a safe place, do not restrain the animal. Keep hands away from their mouth, as they may not recognize you and bite
  • If your pet is bleeding apply direct pressure using gauze over the bleeding site. If blood soaks through apply more gauze (do not remove soaked gauze) until you can reach a veterinary hospital
