  Greetings!

We're so happy to connect with you this month to share exciting hospital and community news! January was a busy month at HEAH. Our "Celebrate Your Senior Pet Month" was very well received. Dr. House attended a seminar on the latest trauma treatments. We also welcomed a new staff member, Dr. Mary Papacek to our  team. Dr. Papacek has been practicing in the Northwest suburbs for 30 years and we are proud to add her services her to our hospital. Her interests lie in endocrinology, surgery, and dentistry. She is available on Thursdays to see patients and perform surgery. Welcome Dr. Papacek!

pickPick the Perfect Chew Toy
Chew toys are extremely important to dogs. Chewing is a natural reflex for dogs, as they exeperience much of the world through their mouths. Not all chew toys are created equal, however. According to the American Veterinary Dental College, chew toys are at their most beneficial if played with often and over a long period of time. To better attract your pup to a chew toy and not your shoes, smear peanut butter over the toy to increase palatability. Rawhides make for good chew toys. Kong products are also good options, as they protect dogs teeth. Avoid anything too hard, like a real bone. Remember, if you wouldn't want to bite down on an object, your dog won't either. Objects that are likely to chip your teeth are likely to damage a dog's as well.

Emergency and Critical Care
Continiung education is something we pride ourselves on here at the hospital. Dr. House just returned from a Post Graduate Seminar in Sun Valley, Idaho. The speaker, Dr. Tim Hackett, President of the American College of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care presented on the topic for an entire week. Trauma seems to be the most often seen emergency and is primarily related to pets being hit by a car. Please, keep your pets on a leash. In these cold months many of us let our dogs out in the yard, make sure they are being monitored at all times and that all the gates are closed.
petPet of the Month
