Make a Difference Header

HEAH has teamed up with the South Barrington Park District to sponsor the "Make a Difference" pet food drive in honor of Make a Difference Day. The food drive supports the Young at Heart Senior Pet Rescue, an organization dedicated to serving older pets that are no longer wanted or are "too old" to be adopted. This organization is doing a great job in getting people to understand that sometimes to best pet is an older pet. Please drop off a bag or two of new and unopened cat and dog food either at the hospital or across the way at the South Barrington Park District. We're collecting scoopable cat litter as well.

Drop Off Locations October 22-27:

  • South Barrington Club
  • South Barrington Park District
  • Hoffman Estates Animal Hospital

Make a difference in the life of a senior pet- possibly the most gentlest creatures of all!

Crazy for Catnip

It's an old adage that cats goes crazy for catnip. They can be seen pawing at the draw where it is tucked safely away, chasing toys filled with it around the room- leaping and pouncing every which way just to get their paws and noses on a tiny scarp of it.

This member of the mint family can have a tremendous impact on cats that have inhertied the gene that predisposes them to being attracted to cat nip. According to the Humane Society, only 50% of cats have inhertited this gene. The trait emerges when cats are between three to six months of age. Kittens won't respond to catnip at all.

So what makes cats go crazy for catnip? The essential oil in catnip, nepetalactone can drive cats absolutely bonkers, epsecially when they smell it.
