Hear from Sarah Steadman, current Programs Chair:
"Since joining in 2013, I have enjoyed my time on the board. There is certainly a large learning curve, but everyone on the board is very supportive of each other and willing to provide guidance. It has been very rewarding to identify speakers and topics that will enhance the collective wisdom and skill of our group. It has also allowed me the opportunity to meet many new individuals both within our field and the consultant world."
RSVP for GRAVA's February Roundtable

"I love my roles as volunteer administrator because every day I am privileged to meet the strongest, most amazing people you can imagine. Most of our volunteers are donor family members who are willing to go into the public and share their painful stories of loss, and transplant recipients who each share the story of their fight to live. I find inspiration in every person I meet."

Message From the President

It's hard to believe, but as of January 2015, I will have been a member of GRAVA for eight years. And it's even harder to believe, for me at least, that I have served on the board of GRAVA for almost six of those eight years!

In the summer of 2009, Ron Stilwell, who was serving as the board secretary at the time, asked if I would consider taking over his role. At the time, I had been a member for about a year and a half and I had also been in the profession for about that long. I still had the glazed look of a "newbie" and I remember that his request struck fear into my heart. Who, me?!? On the board?!? Are you serious?!? I don't know enough! I'm not an expert! I will probably mess up! And anyway, I already feel so busy....how will I have time for this?

Scholarship Report

This is the year. The year I finally get my Certificate in Volunteer Administration! I have spent several years considering this certification; it is a big commitment and certainly deserved the time.

One of the big things that had always held me back was the price tag. This year, I applied for a GRAVA Scholarship and took advantage of the early bird pricing and was able to afford to sign up.

I have thus far gotten as far as the Philosophy Statement. It has been extremely challenging to put my motivation into works.

That said, I feel it has really helped me focus my thoughts and goals for the year. I am looking forward to dedicating myself to improving my practice and doing so alongside the GRAVA community that is so inspiring and supportive.          --Athena Huss

Identifying Who Is and Is Not a Volunteer
The fundamental flaw in the age-old debate is that we seek clear, definitive answers, when there are far too many nuances for that. Read more!
