River Road and Roberts Road Intersection Improvement
Project Limits:
About 900 feet in each direction of the intersection of River and Roberts Roads in Lake Barrington.
Project Description:
This intersection improvement project consists of replacing the existing signalized intersection with a roundabout. The work that will be done includes pavement widening and resurfacing, storm sewer, drainage and pavement shoulder improvements, and replacement of an existing 42 inch diameter
culvert under River Road. The project also includes construction of a 7 foot high retaining wall, street lights, landscaping, new sidewalks and a new multi-use path connection to the Lake County Forest Preserve District path at the Fox River Forest Preserve.
Poor soil conditions make it necessary to stabilize the ground under the new intersection to provide a solid roadway foundation. This stabilization process will require time and it will be necessary to close River Road to all traffic while this work takes place. Roberts Road will remain open to traffic during construction, with the exception of a 2-3 week full intersection closure in 2015.
Project Schedule: The construction schedule for the River Road and Roberts Road roundabout has been modified as a result of several factors including utility relocation delays and a soil stabilization subcontractor conflict. The general construction staging plan will remain the same; a pre-stage will occur this year in order to complete part of stage one with the remaining stage one work to begin next spring.
For the pre-stage work this year, the plan is to close River Road (Roberts Road will remain open) beginning Aug. 11, so the contractor can complete the majority of the soil stabilization work. This closure is expected to last until late November/early December of this year. At that time, it's planned for crews to install temporary pavement for River Road and temporary signals at the intersection so we can open the roadway and intersection for the winter.
In spring of 2015, the contractor will be back in to build the roundabout. River Road will again be closed to traffic so construction of stages one and two can be completed; Roberts Road will remain open to traffic. For stage three, both River and Roberts will be closed for about 20 days to complete the final elements of the roundabout.
The detour routes for all stages remain the same and can be found on the Detours page of the website. The construction staging information can be found on the Schedule page of the website.
