Stormwater Management: Creek Restoration

Approximately one half mile of Dead Dog Creek in Winthrop Harbor has been stabilized and restored after decades of bluff and stream erosion that dumped sediment into the creek degrading water quality. Dead Dog Creek flows eastward from Fossland Park to Spring Bluff Forest Preserve and Illinois Beach State Park, one of the most biologically diverse landscapes in Illinois, and enters Lake Michigan. Restoring the stream and stabilizing the eroding bluffs will keep sediment and pollutants out of this high quality natural area and the near shore of Lake Michigan. Watch this video to learn more about this project.

Forest Preserves News

The Lake County Forest Preserve Board of Commissioners recently purchased a 1-acre addition to Hastings Lake Forest Preserve in Lake Villa.  The preserve is currently under construction with a pending opening in late fall 2013.  Though small in size, the parcel of land provides the missing link needed to complete a 2-mile trail loop around the preserve's 80-acre lake offering big benefits for trail users.  Construction of boardwalks and a few sections of new trail to connect the trail loop will begin in August.  Check the Forest Preserve website (LCFPD.org) for information on the preserve's opening date.
