Weather Update
Lake County IL Winter Weather Advisory Thursday, February 21, 2013
Lake County and much of the central United States will be impacted by a large storm system over the next two days. In Lake County, light snow is expected to begin this evening, with snow increasing in intensity and perhaps a few hours of snowfall rates of up to an inch an hour, before tapering off and changing to light freezing drizzle Friday morning. Snowfall amounts of three to five inches are expected. There is also a possibility of some light lake-effect snow during the day today, and although no significant accumulation is expected, there may be periods of some reduced visibility, particularly nearer to the Lake Michigan shoreline. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory which will be in effect from 9 p.m. tonight through 6 p.m. Friday evening.
Impacts: Snow, light at first, beginning between 7 and 9 p.m., increasing into the early morning hours before tapering off and eventually switching to light freezing drizzle. Snow accumulation of 3 to 5 inches, and light glazing of ice, particularly on elevated porches, stairways, sidewalks, and bridges. Strong gusty winds overnight may cause some blowing of snow. Pedestrians and motorists should anticipate the possibility of hazardous conditions, particularly Friday morning.

Route 53 Update
ILLINOIS TOLLWAY TO AWARD $4 MILLION CONTRACT TO PLAN FOR THE EXTENSION OF ILLINOIS ROUTE 53/120 IN LAKE COUNTY
The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors is expected to approve a $4 million contract at its meeting next week to Schaumburg-based TranSystems Corp. that will continue to plan for the proposed extension of Illinois Route 53/120 in Lake County. If approved, TranSystems will develop a detailed engineering concept, evaluate cost estimates, refine traffic and revenue analyses and survey customers' willingness to pay tolls on the proposed extension. The contract also includes services to study the environmental and economic impacts of the project.
The Tollway's Finance Administration Operations and Strategic Planning Committees recommended the proposed contract to the Tollway Board after reviewing the Illinois Route 53/120 Blue Ribbon Advisory Council's report. A key recommendation from the Council was development of a coordinated, corridorwide land use plan. This will be led by Lake County and the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning and will actively engage each municipality along the corridor to develop an integrated plan for land use, transportation, economic development and open space. The Council recommended that the completed plan be adopted by Lake County and each municipality. The corridor plan process is expected to be underway by mid-2013.
The Illinois Route 53/120 Extension is expected to cost between $2.3 and $2.7 billion. Cost estimates developed as part of the detailed engineering concept will inform future discussions on how to finance the project and potential sources of revenue. This could include local and other sources, as recommended by the Council.
The Illinois Tollway Board of Directors is expected to approve the contract at its February 28, 2013, meeting.
