Geez!! January just started and it's already the end of the month! After whirlwind trip to Cincinnati and Columbus GA, it's good to have a few days in Arizona. That weather reminded me why I left Wisconsin 30 years ago!

Next stop: Stamford, CT for the Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists' Faces of Winter competition and Symposium, then on to NYC and DC:)

Chris

Just Delivered: Kate

Just completed, oil, 36 x 24.

Kate's dad commissioned me to paint this portrait as a Christmas surprise for Kate's mom. We all had fun with the 'conspiracy' . In general, I'd say that commissioned surprise portraits aren't a good idea, except in situations like this, when an adult child, with her own sense of self and style is the subject.

Faces of Winter 2014: Building on Classics

Connecticut Society of Portrait Artists

Not only am I thrilled to have two portraits accepted into what promises to be a fabulous show, I've been invited to join the knock-your-socks-off CSOPA Faculty this year, and am excited to meet portrait painters whose work I've admired for years, as well as to see some artist friends I've know for many years.

The Faces of Winter Show will showcase 83 portraits and hang at the U of CT Stamford Art Gallery for a month. If you're in the area, please stop in to see the show - even better, come to the opening reception February 6, 6-8pm!

Below is my portrait of Long Island plein-aire and marine artist, Kirk Larsen, one of my in-process series, the Artists Portrait Project.

Kirk Larsen: American Artist, oil 28 x 22

Below, Tasha, oil 20 x 14. Tasha Dixon is a talented young actress whom I've been fortunate enough to paint for each of my two books. She is living and working in Los Angeles.

Percy: Life Study
I stress to my students how vitally important it is for every portrait painter to practice regularly from life. I painted model and artist Percy in an open studio session - 3 hours in length total. Sometimes these quick studies don't work out, sometimes they do. It's the process of learning and studying a living human being that counts.

It's also the time for us commission painters to explore new surfaces, materials, techniques - that way we don't have to practice on your portraits:) You can see the sequence of steps in painting this little study on my Blog.
