Finally, fall has come to Phoenix, and it's glorious. My easel's smoking and my fingers are twitching to go back to work  :)

Which, as I am writing this, reminded me of Alberta Hunter's "My Castle's Rockin' "We should all be rockin' like that at age 89. Or at ANY age  :) I traded my Alberta Hunter album for Harmony of the Worlds somewhere around 1978 - my friend clearly got the better part of the deal.

Catch you next month!

Mazel Tov: Portrait of Max

Just completed, oil 20 x 16. Lovely young man, lovely family. Happy Thirteenth, Max! Bar Mitzvah Portrait of Max

Bar Mitzvah Portrait : Max, oil, 20 x 16

Not only did I get the chance to use Fredrix's Blue Label Portrait Canvas, but Gamblin's new Solvent-free Gel Medium, about which I am writing an article for Artists' Magazine  :)
Pleased on both counts!

Plein-aire workshop in Sedona, AZ

Earlier this month, I had the pleasure of studying plein-aire painting with Dave Santillanes, who is a beautifully prepared and articulate instructor. And a very sweet guy.

For those of you have not ever traveled to Sedona, its beauty is staggering.

Below is my set up for the afternoon session:

And below, sunrise. It really looks like this.

And on my quest to learn how to paint en pleine-aire, I have only 78 more paintings to go - 100 from life being the objective  - I really believe that any time artists undertake to learn either a new medium or new genre, it's all about learning by working from life.

Watch for Artists' Magazine's December Issue...
...my article on how to paint eyeglasses will be featured ...thanks to Maureen Bloomfield and all of the folks at the Magazine for giving me the opportunity to appear in print  :)

And from another Max...a portrait of me
This is the drawing I received from another Max, whom I painted when he was about 6 years old. It's so charming I just had to share it again.

...and below, my portrait of him:)
