President Jeff Marshall Key Presenter at
National Land Trust Alliance Rally

On October 1, President Jeff Marshall spoke at the Land Trust Alliance's National Land Conservation Conference in Salt Lake City, UT. The Land Trust Alliance promotes voluntary private land conservation to benefit communities and natural systems. They are the national convener, strategist and representative of more than 1,700 land trusts across America.

Jeff Marshall represented Heritage Conservancy when he presented to more than 1,600 conservation leaders, government officials and academics about the importance of connecting people to the land.
In a presentation titled, "Are We Protecting Land From People?" Jeff discussed the shift in emphasis for land trusts from keeping people off preserved land to connecting people to the land. He explained how this shift is a reaction to the industry's need to show relevance to the public now rather than focusing efforts on protecting land for future generations.

"Engaging public support is critical on a local, state and national scale," said Marshall. "Connecting people to the land is an excellent way to make our mission of preservation tangible to the general public, while utilizing our beautiful natural and historic resources."

We Appreciate Volunteers!

On October 11, staff from Glaxo Smith Kline volunteered to help clean up Jackson Pond, a beautiful preserved property located in Buckingham, PA. The volunteers cleared a trail and removed invasive plants around the pond. The trail was overgrown and not even visible in some areas. With their help, it is now possible to enjoy a walk around the entire perimeter of the pond! This was the second time Glaxo Smith Kline has helped us on our properties, and we greatly appreciate their enthusiasm!

Volunteers from Glaxo Smith Kline
Heritage Conservancy initially began as a small group of volunteers. More than fifty years later, we have preserved over 10,000 acres of land and have established our role as a regional leader in conservation. We would not be able to complete the work we do without the continued help and support of volunteers.

On October 24, we held our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner at Aldie Mansion. Volunteers who gave their time during 2011 and 2012 were invited to join Heritage Conservancy staff and board, as well as other volunteers, for an appreciation ceremony followed by a potluck dinner. President Jeff Marshall welcomed the volunteers and gave a special thank you.

"As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on the generosity and selflessness of engaged members of the community. Volunteers are a priceless part of this organization," said Marshall. "Volunteering for Heritage Conservancy demonstrates a keen interest in our region's heritage and our mission of preserving this community's precious lands, farms and historic structures."

Washington Township Water Festival Makes a Splash with Students

Karen Williamson, Heritage Conservancy's Landscape Architect, explains the Enviroscape model to students.

We recently gave 5th and 6th graders at Brass Castle Elementary School and 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders at Port Colden Elementary School in Warren County, NJ, insight into the impacts of land use on water quality at Washington Township School District's Biennial Water Festival.

The outdoor event held in September featured a presentation by Heritage Conservancy staff on the potential sources of water pollution using an Enviroscape model on loan from the Bucks County Conservation District. The hands-on activity allowed students to explore the many ways in which pollution can reach surface and groundwater sources and to understand the importance of protecting water features.

Holiday Events at Aldie Mansion

Historic Aldie Mansion has fittingly been our home for the last 25 years. The stately 1927 mansion evokes a time in America when craftsmanship reached an art form. It is a standing monument of a cooperative effort in historic preservation.

Whatever the occasion, your event can be customized. A variety of different sized rooms are available. We can accommodate small parties, as well as parties with up to 200 guests. Available November 19th through December 19th, Mondays through Thursdays, daytime or evening.
