From the Mayor's Desk
July 4, 1776, is the date we celebrate our independence from Britain and when our Democracy was born. This is a holiday to celebrate the birth of our great nation, the creation of the greatest system of freedom and democracy. All of this occurred as a result of great physical and financial sacrifice among the brave men and women of yesterday and today who have sacrificed so greatly to ensure the traditions bestowed by our remarkable founders.
So today we celebrate everything American. We join with friends and family at traditional backyard barbecues, at beach parties, and at neighborhood and regional events. But clearly the best party in around takes place right here, as the people of Palmetto Bay gather for a giant event in our Downtown District around Village Hall -- with live music, fun for kids, a wide assortment of food and drink, and a fantastic Fireworks Show.
Let us continue to look to a future that belongs to all of us -- a future that "we, the people" have the power to create. I wish you all a wonderful holiday, and hope that the day's happiness reminds us all of the importance of the Fourth of July.
On a final note, please don't forget about our pets this holiday weekend. It can be a very stressful evening for them. Pets and fireworks don't mix. So make plans now to keep your pet safe. And please be smart if you plan on being your own pyrotechnician: review this Fireworks Safety brochure produced by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. Have fun and be safe.
